This document outlines the plans for a thriller opening title sequence created by four students. It details their roles and responsibilities, as well as the narrative, target audience, conventions, and technical aspects like camerawork, editing, sound, and mise-en-scene that will be used. The narrative involves a woman who comes home after unusual "work" and is then confronted by someone she thought she had killed. Red will be used throughout to signify blood and murder.

4. Brief
◦ Our task is to create a thriller opening title sequence effectively.
◦ We must try to include the correct conventions and make sure the
titles used are effective and clear.
◦ Also we need to ensure we use effective camerawork, props, location,
costumes, makeup, cast and soundtrack. Also our thriller must
appeal to our target audience and the narrative must be effective for
the audiences viewing.

5. ◦Mystery – Portrayed using close-ups that do not reveal the whole
appearance of Character 1. This makes the audience unaware of
who she is and what she’s capable of. The narrative is mysterious as
no insight is yet given to the audience about the two character’s
lives. This makes them want to continue watching to find out who
they are.
◦Crime – During the filming of our Vox pops, we found this sub-
genre to be popular. This sub-genre is represented through the use
of the Mise-en-scene.

8. ◦ A young woman comes home and starts her normal routine, typical of someone coming
home from work.
◦ It is clear that she has done something unusual rather than normal work, a used knife is
wrapped up and put into a drawer.
◦ While getting a drink of cranberry juice, a news report of a missing body is heard on the
radio but is ignored.
◦ She removes her red lipstick and has a shower, blood is seen running into the drain
◦ She walks downstairs into the kitchen and makes a cup of tea, the doorbell is heard.
◦ When she opens the door it is the person she thought she had killed, bloodied and
holding a knife.
◦ The woman drops her tea and the title appears in the smashed teacup.
◦ The colour red will be seen throughout to connote murder and blood.

10. ◦ The soundtrack we will be using will be up-beat and fast paced. This is because we found
when researching for our Vox pops, this is what our target audience thinks makes an
effective soundtrack. These kinds of soundtracks are also most commonly found in
thrillers of the sub-genres we are using.
◦ Our footage is relatively fast paced, and it will be edited in this way too. Because of this,
an up-tempo soundtrack will be more successful.
◦ We will be using a range of different sound effects, for example:
- A car engine
- Footsteps
- Opening/closing of drawers
- Shower
- Radio
- Smashing of mug

11. ◦ Close-ups, extreme close-ups, mid shots, bird-eye views, point of
views, tracking and panning shots will be used.
◦ The camerawork used will mean that the location and identity of the
characters will remain a mystery to the audience.
◦ Also point of view shots will mean that the audience will feel more
involved in the scenes and what the character is doing.
◦ Enigmas will be created by the camerawork used, the close-ups will
make the setting and characters a mystery.

focusing on the footage first, then the transitions and then

reiterate the subgenre; crime and mystery. The conventions used will be typical
for this genre to replicate the authenticity of a real thriller opening. These would
be elements such as:
