The document summarizes recent political developments in India. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) party has distanced itself from its alliance with the BJP over new agriculture bills by resigning from the cabinet in protest. Harsimrat Kaur Badal, the SAD's sole representative in the cabinet, resigned against the bills which were passed despite opposition parties calling them "anti-farmer". The SAD aims to consolidate its support among Punjab's farming community ahead of the 2022 state elections by opposing the bills which farmers fear will eliminate price guarantees for crops.
The new Criminal Procedure (Identification) Bill 2022 proposes to allow police and prison authorities to collect, store and analyze sensitive biological and physical data of convicted persons, arrestees, and detainees. This includes retina scans, iris scans, fingerprints, and DNA. It aims to modernize identification techniques. However, critics argue it violates privacy, empowers authorities excessively, and could be misused on protesters. It also proposes sharing this data with other agencies for 75 years. Opposition parties have termed the bill "unconstitutional" and an "attack on privacy". Some states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have passed similar laws but with the President's approval.
As India entered the fourth phase of lockdown on Monday, several states relaxed restrictions and restarted economic activities. However, malls, schools, colleges and religious gatherings remained prohibited. The ICMR also revised its testing strategy to test all SARI patients and frontline workers, regardless of travel history. Meanwhile, India's COVID-19 cases crossed 100,000 with over 3,000 deaths as Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu reported over 2,000 new cases. The stock market declined sharply in response to the government's economic relief packages.
- There was a minor face-off between Indian and Chinese troops at Naku La in North Sikkim on January 20, resulting in minor injuries to soldiers on both sides. The situation was resolved by local commanders.
- China denied the incident took place, while India confirmed it but said it was a minor incident resolved locally as per protocols. Around 20 Chinese soldiers and 4 Indians received minor injuries.
- The incident occurred when China tried to enter Indian territory, and took place as military commanders from both countries were preparing for talks to defuse border tensions.
- UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has cancelled his upcoming visit to India in January due to a surge in COVID-19 cases and lockdown measures imposed in the UK. He was scheduled to be the chief guest at India's Republic Day celebrations.
- The decision was taken after Johnson spoke to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Johnson said it was important for him to focus on the domestic response to the virus situation in the UK.
- Both leaders reiterated their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation in addressing the pandemic. Johnson hopes to visit India in the first half of 2021.
1) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed Parliament regarding the ongoing border situation with China in Ladakh. He accused China of violating prior agreements and transgressing the border.
2) The Home Ministry informed Parliament that no leaders in Jammu & Kashmir are under house arrest, though 223 people remain in detention including former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.
3) India's COVID-19 cases crossed 5 million, with several states continuing to report high daily numbers, though some states saw fewer cases than previous peaks.

Crs report if11395 changes to indian citizenship lawssabrangsabrang
The document summarizes changes to India's citizenship laws through the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act in December 2019. It notes that for the first time, religion is added as a criterion for naturalization, sparking large protests. Critics argue the law pursues a Hindu nationalist agenda that threatens India's secular status. Combined with a national citizenship registry, it may affect the status of India's 200 million Muslims. The government argues it protects religious minorities from neighboring countries, but excludes Muslims and others facing persecution.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with other top Indian politicians, received the Covid-19 vaccine on the first day of the expanded vaccination drive in India. Over 1 million citizens registered on the CoWIN portal on the opening day. A study cited in the New York Times suggested that a massive power outage in Mumbai last year may have been triggered by cyberattacks on India's power facilities launched by China during the India-China border standoff. The Road Transport and Highways Ministry achieved a record of constructing 30 km of highways per day.
The Supreme Court pulled up the central government on its COVID-19 vaccination policy and registration process, noting the digital divide in India and issues with the CoWIN app. The court questioned how illiterate workers in rural areas could register to get vaccinated and said the government needs to be more flexible in its approach. It also expressed displeasure with the affidavits filed by the Centre and told it to address the problems raised instead of just saying it knows best.
The Indian economy contracted by 7.3% in the last fiscal year, its worst performance in over 40 years. While the fourth quarter did see a small rise of 1.6%, this was still the first full-year contraction since 1979-80. The

The Taliban seized two more
provinces on Saturday and
approached the outskirts of
Afghanistan’s capital while also
launching a multi-pronged
assault on a major northern city
defended by former warlords,
Afghan officials said.
The insurgents have cap-
tured much of northern, west-
ern and southern Afghanistan
in a breakneck offensive less
than three weeks before the
United States is set to withdraw
its last troops, raising fears of
a full militant takeover or
another Afghan civil war.
However, Afghan President
Ashraf Ghani delivered a tele-
vised speech on Saturday, his
first public appearance since
the recent Taliban gains, in
which he vowed not to give up
the “achievements” of the 20
years since the US toppled the
Taliban following the 9/11
attacks.
The Taliban captured all of
Logar province, just south of
the capital, Kabul, and detained
local officials, said Hoda
Ahmadi, a lawmaker from the
province. She said the Taliban
have reached the Char Asyab
district, just 11 kilometers (7
miles) south of Kabul.
The insurgents also cap-
tured the capital of Paktika,
bordering Pakistan, according
to Khalid Asad, a lawmaker
from the province. He said
fighting broke out in Sharana
early on Saturday but ended
after local elders intervened to
negotiate a pullout. He said the
governor and other officials
surrendered and were on their
way to Kabul.
Sayed Hussan Gerdezi, a
lawmaker from the neighbor-
ing Paktia province, said the
Taliban seized most of its local
capital, Gardez, but that battles
with Government forces were
still underway. The Taliban
said they controlled the city
completely.
The Taliban meanwhile
attacked the northern city of
Mazar-e-Sharif from several
directions, setting off heavy
fighting on its outskirts,
according to Munir Ahmad
Farhad, a spokesman for the
provincial governor.
The Taliban have made
major advances in recent days,
including capturing Herat and
Kandahar, the country’s second
and third-largest cities.
They now control 19 of
Afghanistan’s 34 provinces,
leaving the Western-backed
government in control of a
smattering of provinces in the
center and east, as well as
Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif.
The US has continued
holding peace talks between
the government and the
Taliban in Qatar this week, and
the international community
has warned that a Taliban
Government brought about by
force will not be accepted.

Aday before Independence
day, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi on Saturday
said in memory of the struggles
and sacrifices of our people,
14th August will be observed as
“Partition Horrors
Remembrance Day”. The
Congress was quick to accuse
the Prime Minister of playing
“divisive and diversionary pol-
itics”. “Partition’s pains can
never be forgotten. Millions of
our sisters and brothers were
displaced and many lost their
lives due to mindless hate and
violence. In memory of the
struggles and sacrifices of our
people, 14th August will be
observed as Partition Horrors
Remembrance Day,” said Modi
in a series of tweets.
The partition of India
involved the division of two
provinces, Bengal and Punjab
based on district-wise non-
Muslim or Muslim majorities
involving displacement of an
estimated 1.5 core people along
religious lines. It led to unprece-
dentedviolenceandrefugeecri-
sis in India and Pakistan.
“May the
#PartitionHorrorsRemembranc
eDay keep reminding us of the
need to remove the poison of
social divisions, disharmony
and further strengthen the spir-
it of oneness, social harmony
and human empowerment,”
the Prime Minister said in his
tweet.
