Relevantexperience
Field assistant to a PhD student studying the Grevy’s Zebra, Kenya [Oct. 2015-Nov. 2015]
Conducted fieldwork for 6 weeks in remote locations in Samburu region. This included
interviewing local people and field-based laboratory work
Collection and preservation of faecal samples (in ethanol, on silica) for future DNA
extraction
Preparing and reading parasites slides using the salt flotation method
MRes Project, Supervised by Professor Mike Bruford, Cardiff University [Feb. 2015-Sep. 2015]
Title: ‘The use of ancient DNA from sediment as a measure of historic biodiversity in the
Brecon Beacons National Park’
Extracted environmental ancient DNA (aDNA) from a sediment core with the aim of
examining past changes in biodiversity (mammals and plants) in the Brecon Beacons, Wales.
Used a metabarcoding approach which included optimising the PCR for DNA amplification,
designing primer barcodes and preparing samples to be sent for Next-Generation
Sequencing
Handling and analysing NGS data using the software package OBITools.
Researchassistant, Cardiff University & Ryeland Sheep Society [Jul. 2015 & Jul.-Aug 2014]
Responsible for genotyping100-150 Ryeland sheep. This included DNA extraction from
blood, PCR preparation and optimisation and fragment analysis.
Presented the genotyping experiment and 2014 results at the Ryeland Sheep Society AGM
(2015)
Undergraduate dissertation, Cardiff University [Oct. 2012-Mar. 2013]
Title: ‘Genetic Basis of Coat Colour Polymorphism in Ryeland Sheep’
This project helped to develop my laboratory-based skills including DNA extraction (blood
and tissue), PCR, gel electrophoresis, Sanger sequencing, identifying SNPs
Primate Coordinator Durham University Primate and Predator Project, South Africa [Oct. 2011-
Aug. 2012]
Designing, implementing and managing field projects on phenology and primate behavior. I
also helped collect predator scat, camera trap data and with leopard trapping

impromptu about local biodiversity and primates
Tropical biology field course, Danau Girang Field Centre, Borneo [Jul. 2011]
We were taught a number of ecological techniques such as small mammal trapping, bird
ringing, invertebrate and amphibian trapping and botanical and crocodile surveying.
Collaborated in a small group to produce a comprehensive project report detailing the effect
of habitat conversion on the abundance and distribution of primates along the Kinabatangan
river
Zoo management internship, Khao Kheo Open Zoo, Thailand [Aug. 2010]
• Practical animal husbandry experience, including rearing
• Lectures on the role of zoos in conservation including shadowing the research scientist to
learn about their Clouded Leopard captive breeding program
