Scoring (optional of course!)
Each Key has three questions
A rapid, confident “yes” response to each
question earns one point
A reluctant or tentative “yes” or a “no”
does not earn a point
The maximum score is 30

4
Family Support
Do you have close friends and family members
who have explicitly indicated their full support
for your doing this?
Do they respond constructively when the going
gets tough?
Are they willing to do without your usual level of
involvement and dedication to family activities
for a while, and fill in as needed?
Peggy L. Chinn © 2012
5
Passionate Area of Focus
Do you have at least one or two areas of focus
for your scholarly work?
Do you avidly pursue any possible information
that comes your way about these interests?
Do your eyes sparkle when you talk about these
interests with others?
Peggy L. Chinn © 2012
6
Time*
Can you cut back on your employment
obligations, or do you have blocks of time that
are free from employment demands?
Can you eliminate some of the things that
consume your usual daily activities to make
way for doctoral study?
Do you typically handle time pressures
constructively?

* Each 3-credit course requires at least one full day a
week

Stress-Management
Do you have a life-long habit of handling stress
constructively (or does it freak you out)?
Do you have a regular habit of physical
exercise?
Do you regularly eat a balanced and nutritious
diet, with minimal alcohol/tobacco/drug use?

8
Self-Discipline
Are you well-organized in your personal, family
and work lives?
Do you typically complete, in a timely manner,
projects you set out to accomplish?
Can you concentrate when other things are
going on that might distract you?
Peggy L. Chinn © 2012
9
Technological Readiness
Do you rely heavily on email, word processing,
internet information resources, and web-based
platforms (banking, social networking, etc.) in
your daily life?
Are you adept at learning new computer,
internet, and other technological skills?
Do you know how to locate help when you run
into a technological challenge?
Peggy L. Chinn © 2012

reading material constructively?

11
Writing
Do you become engrossed in writing once you
get into it?
Do you have a personal space, or at least a space
where you feel comfortable writing?
Are you comfortable with the grammatical and
stylistic conventions of writing?
Peggy L. Chinn © 2012
12
Response to Criticism
In sports, hobbies, and other activities, do you
seek feedback from others and welcome it as a
way to refine your skills?
Are you able to remain calm and focused when
you feel that others disapprove?
Do you have skills of constructively discussing
issues with others when you disagree?
Peggy L. Chinn © 2012
13
Compatibility with Program
Is there a good “fit” between your interests and
the resources offered by the PhD program?
Is there at least one faculty member who has a
program of scholarship related to your interest?
Do you feel comfortable when you interact with
others associated with the program?
Peggy L. Chinn © 2012
14
If you tracked your score. . .
10 or below - seriously consider another path
10 to 20 - proceed with caution, and with
determination to address each area where you
did not answer “yes”
20 - 30 - go for it, but be diligent in addressing
areas where you did not answer “yes” with
confidence
