Petra, located in Jordan, is an ancient city carved into rose-colored sandstone cliffs that was rediscovered in the 19th century. It contains structures like the Treasury, a temple facade over 100 feet tall carved from the rock face. Petra was inhabited as early as the 6th century BC by the Nabataeans, Arab traders, and later became part of the Roman Empire. Though earthquakes destroyed much of the city, the remaining structures still showcase the city's engineering feats and the natural artwork of wind erosion on the colorful sandstone cliffs.
