For 600 years it has been thought that this city, in the middle of the desert of Jordan, was just legendary like the cities of Atlantis and Troy
The Swiss explorer that managed to find it had to travel through impressive paths such as this, among mountains of stone.
Imagine his emotion when, upon arriving for the first time, he saw this scene in the 19th century!
The Palace of Petra, a temple in Greek style (Hellenic), is also called "The Treasure" and is 42m.(138 feet)  high
The palace was completely carved in  sandstone  rock.
But the palace is only one among many magnificent constructions  in Petra.
Petra was constructed in the 6th century BC. by  Nabataean Arabs and was part of the Persian Empire.
The  Nabataeans  were Bedouin Arabs who were traders of spices,like incense, myrrh and aromatic plants.  .
By the year 60 AD, Petra was conquered and absorbed into the Roman Empire.
Over the years, the wind has carved beautiful  forms in these mountains  of chalky rock.
Petra was utilized for the final scene of the movies Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade

The colors in these stones are natural!!
The geological composition of the sand here makes for natural "paintings" as these.
