1. Rich landowners hold power and people fight for resources in remote areas. Natives also fighting to survive on their land. Border disputes, social and religious wars.
2. It’s a German aristocrat and a Swiss artist that document the Native American Plains Indian at a time when most Americans had little empathy. This is of historical significance as many of the tribes were decimated by smallpox shortly thereafter.
3. A terrible time for President Lincoln and American. The North and South at odds over Slavery. So many men die brutally from gunshot wounds, amputation and infection. The British are within days of supporting General Lee which could have changed the outcome of the battle.
4. 1875 –After 14 years of laboring, immigrants paid $2 a day, comes the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge. William “Boss” Tweed a corrupt politician, helped the poor but skimmed money until jailed. Jacob Riis documents the plight of the tenements and child povety in How the Other Half Lives .
