1. The student learned about the dominant disability at the foster home they are researching, Agape, and suggestions for organizing a bake sale fundraiser.
2. The student used the Big Six research method, meeting with the creator of Agape as their primary source and conducting additional research at the school library and online.
3. The student learned the importance of planning, including how to organize their research, sources to use, and how to record and obtain information, as well as asking for alternatives if needed.
I successfully completed my doctorate from Virginia Tech in 2009 after a six year journey. About halfway along the way, I got very stuck! In the following slide show, I outline why I got stuck, and my personal process for getting unstuck. The slides were motivated specifically to support a presentation at Virginia Tech in February 2010, but decided to post as a reference for others as well.

1. PERSONAL PROJECT PROCESS JOURNAL - Reflection
1. What have you learnt about your AOI related topic for your project?
I have learnt more about my community, Agape. I learned about the dominate
disability in the foster home. I also learned about the methods of organization of a
bake sale that they prefer and I got some suggestions from them to how the bake sales
should go.
2. How did you learn these things?. Consider use of The Big Six, What questions did
you ask to guide your research and were they helpful? What sources were helpful,
etc.? I learnt these things by:
Firstly, I filled in the Big Six: Steps for effective research sheet, so to organize the
questions and how I shall collect information.
Secondly, I met up with Cheryl, the creator of Agape and my primary source, and
asked her questions that I had come up with.
Thirdly, I went to the school library and looked up books on sicknesses, also I
researched online to broaden my research.
3. What have you learn about the techniques ( steps, skills & materials) and process to
use to make your project?
I learned that I have to plan everything before I put everything into action. Planning
as to how I shall organize the research, where I shall get the research from, and how
am I going to record and obtain the information. Also I should always ask for
suggestions and alternatives in case I can’t find my information.
4. How did you learn these things?. Consider use of The Big Six, What questions did
you ask to guide your research and were they helpful? What sources were helpful,
etc.? I learnt these things by:
5. What problems have you encountered so far?
Some Problems I encountered were not being punctual to my due dates, and being
behind in scanning signed sheets, also not being punctual on putting things onto my
wikispace.
6. How did you attempt to fix these and how successful were you?
I tried to fix the problem/s by:
Clearing time to organize my situation, prioritize and to put everything into action.
7. Explain the sort of a learner you have been so far (see learner profile)
I have been a thinker because I had to organize and to plan as to how I am going to
continue my progress.
