Uncertainty in Petrophysics From Bayes To Monte Carlo
Increasingly, reduced petrophysical data sets are being used to make critical decisions about the location of deepwater exploration wells. In addition, while drilling deepwater wells, reduced data sets are being used to make well design and completion decisions that may impact the safe operation of the well. However, despite numerous examples in the literature of how data is used to make decisions, very little attention has been given to reliability of the data and its impact on uncertainty, diagnosis, and risk. This presentation will act as a catalyst for starting a discussion on the impact of data reliability on risk assessment. The talk will cover the fundamental principles of uncertainty risk and the impact of data reliability on decision making. Two examples will be used to illustrate the issues. The first will look at risking of exploration wells using AVO response that has low/marginal reliability. The second example will be the risk analysis of a published paper: ‘Detecting Shallow Drilling Hazard in Large Boreholes Using LWD Acoustics’. This paper avoided the issue of data reliability. The potential impact of not considering data reliability will be explored and discussed with the group.

Borehole seismic techniques bridge the gap between remote surface-seismic observations and downhole reservoir evaluation: Borehole seismic data provide intrinsically higher-resolution, higher-fidelity images than surface-seismic data in the vicinity of the wellbore, and unique access to properties of seismic wavefields to enhance surface-seismic imaging. Well Log Interpretation
Well log interpretation involves using well log data to estimate reservoir properties. It has been used since the 1920s to qualitatively identify hydrocarbons and is now a quantitative tool. A key figure was Gustavus Archie who in the 1940s established the field of petrophysics by relating well logs to core data. His work allowed properties like porosity, permeability and fluid saturation to be estimated. TURBIDITES: MODE OF FORMATION OF TURBIDITES AND ITS ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE
Turbidites are deposits resulting from turbidity currents. They are gravity driven sediments derived mostly from the continents and are deposited on the ocean floor when the transporting medium loses its energy. These turbidite deposits are sealed most times by shales to form a stratigraphic trap. If the factors required for hydrocarbon accumulation in a petroleum play system are prevalent, then the turbidite will most likely serve as a good reservoir to house hydrocarbon. Our modern day economy requires enormous amount of energy to meet the energy demand and hydrocarbon unarguably is a non-renewable resource. Perhaps its worth mentioning that the decrease in reserves. And it has been established that turbiditic deposits help to host important economic resources such as hydrocarbon, when the right conditions are emplaced. Hence, the need to understand their formation for exploration success.

Modern oil and gas field management is increasingly reliant on detailed and precise 3D reservoir characterisation, and timely areal monitoring. Borehole seismic techniques bridge the gap between remote surface-seismic observations and downhole reservoir evaluation: Borehole seismic data provide intrinsically higher-resolution, higher-fidelity images than surface-seismic data in the vicinity of the wellbore, and unique access to properties of seismic wavefields to enhance surface-seismic imaging. With the advent of new, operationally-efficient very large wireline receiver arrays; fiber-optic recording using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS); the crosswell seismic reflection technique, and advanced seismic imaging algorithms such as Reverse Time Migration, a new wave of borehole seismic technologies is revolutionizing 3D seismic reservoir characterization and on-demand reservoir surveillance. New borehole seismic technologies are providing deeper insights into static reservoir architecture and properties, and into dynamic reservoir performance for conventional water-flood production, EOR, and CO2 sequestration – in deepwater, unconventional, full-field, and low-footprint environments. A depositional sequence is defined as a succession of genetically related strata bounded by unconformities and correlative conformities. During a sequence, systems tracts are deposited in response to changes in relative sea level, including highstand, falling stage, lowstand, and transgressive tracts bounded by surfaces like sequence boundaries, transgressive surfaces, and flooding surfaces.

Well Log Interpretation
Well log interpretation involves using well log data to estimate reservoir properties. It has been used since the 1920s to qualitatively identify hydrocarbons and is now a quantitative tool. A key figure was Gustavus Archie who in the 1940s established the field of petrophysics by relating well logs to core data. His work allowed properties like porosity, permeability and fluid saturation to be estimated. A presentation on well log interpretation outlined the workflow including editing logs, estimating properties like shale volume, porosity, permeability and fluid saturation, and presented two case studies analyzing different carbonate reservoirs.
Basic well log interpretation

TURBIDITES: MODE OF FORMATION OF TURBIDITES AND ITS ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE
Turbidites are deposits resulting from turbidity currents. They are gravity driven sediments derived mostly from the continents and are deposited on the ocean floor when the transporting medium loses its energy. These turbidite deposits are sealed most times by shales to form a stratigraphic trap. If the factors required for hydrocarbon accumulation in a petroleum play system are prevalent, then the turbidite will most likely serve as a good reservoir to house hydrocarbon. Our modern day economy requires enormous amount of energy to meet the energy demand and hydrocarbon unarguably is a non-renewable resource. Perhaps its worth mentioning that the decrease in reserves. And it has been established that turbiditic deposits help to host important economic resources such as hydrocarbon, when the right conditions are emplaced. Hence, the need to understand their formation for exploration success.
