Julia McElhinney, a Dartmouth College student majoring in Environmental Studies and minoring in Studio Art, interned with the Union of Concerned Scientists in Washington DC through the Perkins Bass '34 Public Affairs Internship Fund. As an intern in UCS's Food & Environment Program, Julia conducted research on nutrient cycling in agricultural systems and US governmental programs supporting local food systems. She also tracked policy priorities in the developing Farm Bill and analyzed its potential impact. Julia gained insight into sustainable, small-scale agriculture and its role in healthier communities. She looks forward to applying this knowledge to her academic and professional interests in community building.
