Heat safety... Did you know There’s
an app for that?
When you're working in the heat, safety comes first. With the OSHA-
NIOSH Heat Safety Tool, you have vital safety information available
whenever and wherever you need it - right on your mobile phone.
The App allows workers and supervisors to calculate the heat index for
their worksite, and, based on the heat index, displays a risk level to
outdoor workers. Then, with a simple "click," you can get reminders
about the protective measures that should be taken at that risk level to
protect workers from heat-related illness-reminders about drinking
enough fluids, scheduling rest breaks, planning for and knowing what to
do in an emergency, adjusting work operations, gradually building up the
workload for new workers, training on heat illness signs and symptoms,
and monitoring each other for signs and symptoms of heat-related
illness.

business challenge

Two Penny Supply Executive staff members became volunteer mentors for the 2017 Chamber High
School Business Challenge, a program which inspires young entrepreneurs to learn more about what it
takes to design and build a business.
Brian Groff, VP Safety, Health and Environment, mentored a team from Middletown High School while
VP of Marketing Yonn Barrick mentored a competing team within the Derry TownshipSchool
District. The goal for this project was to learn from menotrs with real life experiences. During the
process the teachers were able to assist the students, but the mentors were there to provide invaluable
“real world”advice.
The assignments consisted of creating a company logo, mission statement, marketing strategy and a
financial plan to make their company profitable. As a mentor, I was consulted on different aspects of
what a good plan would be. They were very quick to make decisions and I truly believe they have a
good business plan for submission to the Chamber. The ultimate prize each student could receive was
scholarship money for their college tuition,” says BrianGroff.
The competition finalists pitched their plans “Shark Tank” style to a panel of judges on
Wednesday, April 26 from 9:00am-12:00pm at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.

Invitations by Prescott quarry staff to South Lebanon Township Emergency Responders for Saturday
morning, June 3, resulted in 10 emergency responders using the 90-minute window to familiarize
themselves with Pennsy’s Prescott site and its key staff including QC Manager Tim Kindt, Quarry
Superintendents Dan Knight and Brad Rhoads, and QC Technicians Josie Mrocik and Holly Stuller.
Following a light breakfast, visitors were presented with a recently designed site map and provided a
drive-through tour outlining the map’s marked buildings. Following the tour, time was allotted for
questions and answers which focused on unique aspects of the Prescott site as well as discussion on
the particular risks most frequentlyfaced.
With over half of those in attendance having never before been on the Prescott site, this event proved
to be as much a valuable introduction to Pennsy Supply’s industry and site layout as it was a refresher.
All present agreed that they hoped it was knowledge that they would never have to utilize in a real

Using seven specialty mixes designed by Natgun, Pennsy
Supply was awarded the opportunity to supply material forthe
build of a 260,000 gallon water tank! Natgun requested to use
the rear of Paxton Street to build the walls of the tank on site
and we gladly accepted. After it was completed, we used our
lowbed trucks to transport the walls to PAWC. The project
started in April and was totally completed by the end ofMay.
This project was quite complicated with very tight

Overcast skies provided a welcome cover from what could have been a scorching heat descending on Silver Spring
quarry on Sunday, May 28, 2017. Brave athletes enlisted to tackle a five-mile obstacle course known as the Brewser 2
Adventure Race hosted by Pennsy Supply in collaboration with Appalachian Brewing Company (ABC). A schedule of
races for different age and skill levels took place between 8am-2pm on the grounds of both the brewpub and inside
the vast, neighboring Silver Spring quarry. Race proceeds supported the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
(JDRF). “It’s full of challenges,” said Karen McDermott of JDRF. “The quarry run has a lot of different obstacles in it,
including a mud pit and some mental obstacles. That’s exactly what Type 1 diabetics and their families go through on
a daily basis, both mental and physical challenges.” In its second year, the race attracted over 150 more runners than
last year’s race resulting in almost 400 athletes being inspired to take on the physical challenge set up by Area
Manager Anthony Cairns and his team at the quarry who worked hand in hand with ABC volunteers to lay out the
race’s course and demandingobstacles.
