- Thousands of years ago, long before written history, human beings probably discovered the first pearl while searching the seashore for food. Most seawater pearls were harvested by divers working in the Indian Ocean, in areas such as the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, and in the Gulf of Mannar.
- Pearls were in high demand and in order to find enough pearl oysters, free-divers were often forced to descend to depths of over 100 feet on a single breath to collect them. They were, exposed to the dangers of hostile creatures, waves, eye damage, and drowning, often as a result of shallow water blackout on resurfacing.
- In ancient Rome, pearls were considered the ultimate symbol of wealth and social standing In Greece pearls were held in high esteem for its beauty and its association with love and marriage. In the 1630s large quantities of pearls were used as clothing accessories. To be truly fashionable pearls needed to be worn in abundance. Because pearls were so highly regarded, a number of European countries actually passed laws forbidding anyone but the nobility to wear them.
- Pearls are placed into eight basic shape categories: "round," "drop," "button" "oval," "semi-round," "circle -- or "ringed", "baroque," and "semi-baroque." Perfectly round pearls are very rare. But though baroque pearls are often less costly, they can be just as lustrous and appealing as the round.
- Akoya pearls Akoya pearls are known as the classic pearl of choice and have been cultivated and cultured since the early 20th century, making it affordable for many women. Akoya pearls are perfectly round white pearls that are farmed in Japan and China. They are known to sparkle and are very lustrous. These pearls have the greatest shine of all cultured pearls. Fresh Water Pearls Fresh Water Pearls are known as The Fashion Forward Pearl. It now rivals to Akoya pearls in both quality and value. Freshwater pearls range from 2.0 mm to 15.0 and have the widest size range of any pearl type. Freshwater pearls come from freshwater mussels and are primarily produced in China. These pearls are usually white or cream, possibly black once treated they also have common overtones such as Rose, Cream or Ivory Since the 1990s, a new class of round and lustrous freshwater pearls have emerged giving buyers the widest range of options in size, shape and color.
- Tahitian pearls The Black Tahitian Pearl, known as The Dark Exotic Pearl, can range between 8 mm and 21 mm in size. These are vibrant, rare black pearls from French Polynesia, unmistakable and simply unforgettable. They can appear in shades of brown, gray, blue, green and purple Once upon a time Black Tahitians, were so rare that they were called the "Pearl of Queens". They are now highly sought after because of their larger size, brilliant luster, and round shapes. Tahitian Pearls come from the warm waters of the South Sea and are grown in a Black-Lipped oyster. South Sea Pearls South Sea Pearls is referred to as The Rolls Royce of Pearls. These pearls typically range in sizes from 8 mm to 20 mm, averaging 13 mm. They are large and luminous White and Golden pearls with beautiful satin luster. They are the most rare and sought after South Sea pearls are saltwater pearls that are cultivated in Northern Australia and South-East Asia.
