Women, Land and Access to Justice: Focus on Afghanistan
This document summarizes the situation regarding women's land rights and access to justice in Afghanistan. It notes that Afghanistan has a weak formal justice system alongside a strong informal system dominated by patriarchal norms. Women face significant challenges in obtaining inheritance and marital property due to lack of knowledge of their rights, discrimination, and an inaccessible formal system. Enhancing the role of women
In 2009, the Centre for Social Research along with WomenPowerConnect and supported by the United Nations Democracy Fund, designed and implemented a training program for women leaders across India. In the world's largest democracy, women hold a mere 10% of seats in India's parliament. Women’s slim percentage in Indian Parliament also reflects their lack of participation in decision-making process. The goal of our project, "Enhancing the Role of Women in Strengthening Democracy", was to enhance the capacity of women to contest elections, sensitize state and national political parties in order to remove barriers for women, and strengthen the network of women across India in order to advocate for women's issues. Drawing on expertise from seasoned women politicians, as well as our own in-house gender experts, CSR prepared a substantial and thorough training module which was executed by 108 trainers in 30 trainings across India. The training was comprised of 13 modules covered over three days. In addition to the in-person trainings, the CSR team designed and launched an online certificate course in leadership, which can be found at www.womenleadership.in
The core strategy of the project was “Train, Contest, Win”. Women’s leadership capacities were built in order to reduce the gender deficit by imparting training to create a pipeline of 1,000 women leaders who would be motivated to contest elections for state legislatures & national parliament. Participant women were selected from across India, with proportional regional representation. Special emphasis was placed on building leadership amongst the marginalized women belonging to Scheduled caste/Scheduled tribe and backward classes.
It is only a matter of time before the Women's Reservation Bill is passed, reserving 33% of seats in state and national government for women. When this day comes, the need for programs to build the capacities of women who want to contest will become even more urgent than it is today. We are proud to have helped 1,000 women in their preparations for contesting elections and we will continue to provide support and encouragement for these women leaders as they pursue their careers in the years to come. But the work can't stop there. Our goal is to provide training and support to as many women as possible at local, state, and national levels, across party lines, and regardless of caste or class. If the serious issues facing the women of India are to be confronted, women themselves must take their rightful seat at the table.

The 2013 elections marked an increase in women’s participation in mainstream
politics in Pakistan. Not only did more women compete in the elections than ever
before, the 2013 election results saw a record 214 women elected to national and
provincial assemblies. However, although all the main parties have women’s wings,
men still dominate the leadership ranks, and many experienced women were denied
the chance to contest directly for seats in parliament. Of the new women entrants
in 2013, only 16 were elected in general seats; the rest entered parliament through
reserved slots. As a result, this new numerical strength has not translated into women
having decision-making influence or serving in key government positions.
Sexual harassment of women at workplace final
The problem of sexual harassment of women at workplace is an age-old problem. With the entry of more women in the work force of a country due to severe economic constraints, the problem has become more aggravated. Supreme Court of India in “Vishakha and others VS State of Rajasthan”, 1998 and the Apparel Export Promotion Council case are declared to be the law of the land and binding to all concerned until a comprehensive legislation is enacted for the purpose. The Supreme Court formulated certain guidelines for WHWP.

1. Crime against women is a serious issue in India that has physical, economic and psychological consequences. While the Indian constitution and laws protect women's rights and safety, crime against women remains high, including in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

The Madhya Pradesh police have implemented various initiatives to address crime against women such as establishing women's police stations, helplines, awareness campaigns, and training for police officers. However, challenges remain such as underreporting of crimes, lack of trust in police, and too few women police officers.

It summarizes 20 case studies of party practices and identifies concrete steps parties can take. Strategies addressed include promoting women's representation in internal party structures, recruitment of women candidates, funding of women's campaigns, and ensuring women's meaningful participation after elections. Chri and aali barriers in accessing justice english
The report documents barriers faced by 14 rape survivors in Uttar Pradesh when attempting to access justice by reporting assaults to the police. Key findings include:
1) Police delayed or refused to register FIRs in most cases, with registration taking up to 228 days in some instances.
2) In 12 of 14 cases, survivors' complaints were recorded by male police officers instead of female officers as required by law.
3) Survivors reported facing disbelief, derision, and discrimination from police who assumed complaints were false.
4) Dalit survivors faced additional discrimination on the basis of caste in addition to gender.
Case Stories- UP
This document provides 10 case studies of women in Uttar Pradesh, India who faced domestic violence and sought help from women's support centers. It summarizes each woman's experience of abuse, how they approached the support centers for assistance, and how the centers provided counseling, legal aid, medical assistance, job training, and other services to help empower the women and improve their situations. The cases demonstrate how the support centers helped the women gain confidence, stand up to their abusers, and work to rebuild their lives. The document also provides background context on domestic violence statistics in India and the work of Oxfam India and its partners to establish the support centers and help survivors of domestic abuse in Uttar Pradesh.

This document describes a feminist participatory action research (FPAR) program conducted by the Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development (APWLD) from 2012-2014. The program involved 8 young women researchers from 8 countries who were trained in FPAR. Through conducting research in their communities, the researchers gained skills in rights-based approaches, feminist frameworks, facilitating women, and advocacy. The overall goal of the program was to empower marginalized women, amplify their voices, and work towards structural change on issues identified as important by participating women.
Our journey from personal to structural changes
Our journey from personal to structural changes - is not just a report, it’s a story of us. Us, the young women activists who seek for structural change. Sadly, we still live in the world where discrimination still defines lives of majority of women and girls in the Asia Pacific region. We live in the world full of inequalities and income disparity due to neoliberal economic model that evidently has failed rural, indigenous and migrant women. In order to challenge these inequalities, strong movements of rural, indigenous migrant women are needed and they must be supported to build capacity, evidence and engage in advocacy to bring about just and sustainable solutions.
We believe that one of the ways to build movement is through Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR). Our journey of FPAR is a story of a democratic, non-hierarchical mutual learning process and part of our struggle for social transformation. FPAR emphasizes on local knowledge, while share and develop knowledge and skills based on experiences of participants. It looks at the power relations in our daily lives and society and challenges the gendered power asymmetry. It is strong combination of theory and practice which strengthens knowledge and helps to gain skills for further advocacy for structural changes.
Breaking Out Of Marginalization (BOOM) FPAR program gives opportunity to grassroots young women from 8 countries to build their capacity, confidence, establishing leadership roles and aspirations for social change. We came with different backgrounds and perspectives, but during FPAR have gone through process of personal change and grow together. Through Feminist participatory Action Research, we, young women researchers, gained capacity on rights based approach, feminist framework, skills to facilitate and organize women in the community, and skills to conduct effective advocacy and campaign. Together with rural, indigenous and women workers in the community, we were able to conduct research and advocacy.
At the end of the programme, we can see, feel and know that we have evolved. Together we hold hands and do collective actions to challenge patriarchy and unjust development policies and practices. Our Journey from Personal to Structural Change, is not a research report. It’s a story of our reflection on our own journey.

This document summarizes a Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) project conducted in the Philippines. The research was led by the Cordillera Women's Education Action Research Center (CWEARC) and focused on indigenous women in Western Uma, Kalinga who were negatively impacted by geothermal energy development. Through the FPAR process, the indigenous women were able to dispute claims about consent and document the important role of indigenous women in struggles over natural resources. They drafted petitions, organized dialogue, and advocated their position to various government bodies. The document condemns the arrest of a 22-year old rape survivor in Araria district, Bihar along with two feminist activists who were accompanying and supporting her. During the recording of her statement regarding the gang rape she underwent four days prior, she requested the activists be present for support due to her trauma. However, the magistrate perceived this as disrespect to the court and had all three arrested and sent to jail, violating guidelines on supporting rape survivors. The organizations request the Chief Justice of Patna High Court to ensure the immediate release of the survivor and activists and a fair trial for the rape case.

The seminar aims to identify challenges in closing gender gaps, promote women's empowerment, and exchange good practices. It will feature the launch of an OECD report on women in public life and legal reforms in the region. Over two days, sessions will discuss women's participation in public life, advancing women in leadership roles, strengthening gender equality institutions, mainstreaming gender in policies and budgets, and legal reforms to promote gender equality in private life. This document provides details about a research study conducted in 5 districts across 4 North Eastern states of India to understand women's access to justice. Some key findings from the research include:
1. While women enjoy some traditional respect and freedoms, they face discrimination under local customary laws which are often not sensitive to women's rights and do not allow for full participation in political decision making.
2. Rates of crimes against women were highest in Tripura compared to other states studied. However, violence against women is often underreported across the regions.
3. Customary laws and traditional village councils discriminate against women and restrict their rights to property, participation in politics and justice systems. Women's issues are often neglected due

This document describes a feminist participatory action research (FPAR) program conducted by the Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development (APWLD) from 2012-2014. The program involved 8 young women researchers from 8 countries who were trained in FPAR. Through conducting research in their communities, the researchers gained skills in rights-based approaches, feminist frameworks, facilitating women, and advocacy. The overall goal of the program was to empower marginalized women, amplify their voices, and work towards structural change on issues identified as important by participating women.
Our journey from personal to structural changes
Our journey from personal to structural changes - is not just a report, it’s a story of us. Us, the young women activists who seek for structural change. Sadly, we still live in the world where discrimination still defines lives of majority of women and girls in the Asia Pacific region. We live in the world full of inequalities and income disparity due to neoliberal economic model that evidently has failed rural, indigenous and migrant women. In order to challenge these inequalities, strong movements of rural, indigenous migrant women are needed and they must be supported to build capacity, evidence and engage in advocacy to bring about just and sustainable solutions.
We believe that one of the ways to build movement is through Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR). Our journey of FPAR is a story of a democratic, non-hierarchical mutual learning process and part of our struggle for social transformation. FPAR emphasizes on local knowledge, while share and develop knowledge and skills based on experiences of participants. It looks at the power relations in our daily lives and society and challenges the gendered power asymmetry. It is strong combination of theory and practice which strengthens knowledge and helps to gain skills for further advocacy for structural changes.
Breaking Out Of Marginalization (BOOM) FPAR program gives opportunity to grassroots young women from 8 countries to build their capacity, confidence, establishing leadership roles and aspirations for social change. We came with different backgrounds and perspectives, but during FPAR have gone through process of personal change and grow together. Through Feminist participatory Action Research, we, young women researchers, gained capacity on rights based approach, feminist framework, skills to facilitate and organize women in the community, and skills to conduct effective advocacy and campaign. Together with rural, indigenous and women workers in the community, we were able to conduct research and advocacy.
At the end of the programme, we can see, feel and know that we have evolved. Together we hold hands and do collective actions to challenge patriarchy and unjust development policies and practices. Our Journey from Personal to Structural Change, is not a research report. It’s a story of our reflection on our own journey.

This document summarizes a Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) project conducted in the Philippines. The research was led by the Cordillera Women's Education Action Research Center (CWEARC) and focused on indigenous women in Western Uma, Kalinga who were negatively impacted by geothermal energy development. Through the FPAR process, the indigenous women were able to dispute claims about consent and document the important role of indigenous women in struggles over natural resources. They drafted petitions, organized dialogue, and advocated their position to various government bodies. The young Filipina researcher found the FPAR framework enlightening as it considers gender, class, power dynamics, and aims to shift power rather than maintain researcher neutrality

The document condemns the arrest of a 22-year old rape survivor in Araria district, Bihar along with two feminist activists who were accompanying and supporting her. During the recording of her statement regarding the gang rape she underwent four days prior, she requested the activists be present for support due to her trauma. However, the magistrate perceived this as disrespect to the court and had all three arrested and sent to jail, violating guidelines on supporting rape survivors. The organizations request the Chief Justice of Patna High Court to ensure the immediate release of the survivor and activists and a fair trial for the rape case.
