In its short history, the PDI has offered

The Professional Development Institute (PDI) of the American University
of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) was established in 2011 for the purpose of
supporting individuals, organizations, and professional groups with
courses and programs covering a wide range of subjects, including
English language studies and management and business trainings. It
also complements the educational objectives of the American University
of Iraq, Sulaimani by providing opportunities for life-long learning
through programs and services that enable participants to develop the
knowledge and skills necessary to achieve personal and professional
goals, improve productivity of organizations, and provide leadership and
services to their communities.
Working collaboratively with individuals, businesses and both
government and non-governmental organizations, PDI seeks to identify
and develop value-adding programs and services. PDI offers a unique
Certification Program, allowing students to gain specialized knowledge in
Project Management, Leadership and Finance. PDI’s professional courses
include PMP, Human Resource Management, Contract Management,
Cisco Networking Academy – CCNA, and MS Project 2013. PDI also offers
language courses such as English as a Second Language (ESL), TOEFL &
IELTS Preparation, Business Writing, Advanced Conversation in English,
Kurdish Language, and Arabic Language.
PDI has many prominent clients. They include, among others, AsiaCell,

The mission of the Professional Development Institute is to promote the
development of skills and qualifications in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq
that cater to the emerging needs of the community and the evolving
economic environment.
PDI offers a student-centered education and cooperates with business,
industry, government and civil society, to serve the community while
generating a network of support for operations and alumni. PDI is
dedicated to providing a forum that allows attendees to broaden

English language skills for work, personal
development, or academic coursework
preparation. Courses are taught by experience
professors and utilize cutting-edge language
labs and learning technology.

offered in PDI’s English language program
offer students a chance to learn and improve
their English language skills. PDI’s ESL
course provides comprehensive exposure
to the four important elements of English
language instruction: writing (and grammar),
reading, speaking, and listening. PDI provides

7. This course is for those who are serious about their academic and
professional future and want a challenging course that will prepare
them to write well in their career or in an academic program.
In this course, participants will start with a strong foundation by
mastering the grammatical structures needed to form perfect
sentences. They will build on this foundation by learning how to write
well-organized paragraphs. Then they will learn to construct excellent
5-paragraph essays, and even research papers.
English Academic & Business Writing
This course is designed for students with higher-level English skills
who want to improve spoken English. Focused solely on speaking,
the course will help students learn to speak in English for an extended
period of time with ease. Activities will include guided conversations,
discussion groups, debates, and presentations. Throughout the
course, the instructor will monitor the students’ pronunciation,
fluency, and grammatical accuracy, and give feedback to enable
students to evaluate and improve their own skills in these areas.

designed for upper intermediate and
advanced English speakers who need to
practice key test taking strategies, with

and writing.

9. English for academics
The Professional Development Institute (PDI),
in association with Dar Al-Khibra Organization
(DKO), is launching an 80-hour intensive English
language training during summer time for
academics and professionals from central and
southern Iraq at the modern AUIS campus.
Participants can enjoy four weeks of top
quality English language classes taught by
native English-speaking instructors at the AUIS
campus, plus they can enjoy the beautiful nature
of Sulaimani.
Tuition fee for this course includes 80 hours of
training, breakfast and lunch at AUIS cafeteria,
and accommodation.
English Summer Camp
This 3-week course gives students ages 13-17 a
chance to improve their English and have fun.
Mornings focus on English language skills, with
particular emphasis on speaking. Afternoons are
full of fun activities, including art, drama, sports,
computers, and movies. All of these activities
give students a chance to put their English into
practice, as well as learn new skills and build
teamwork.

Arabic Language
Targeted at beginners for the purpose of introducing students to basic
conversational Arabic and enabling them to begin communicating in
Arabic. The intention of the course is to give beginners the confidence to
successfully interact in Arabic in everyday situations, and also introduce
learners to basic reading and writing in Arabic.

10. Kurdish Language
Kurdish (Sorani) Level 1
Targeted at absolute beginners, the objective of this course is to
introduce students to conversational Kurdish and enable them to begin
communicating in Sorani. The intention of the course is to give absolute
beginners the confidence to successfully interact with the Kurdish
community in everyday situations.
Prerequisite to enter Kurdish Level 1: None
Kurdish (Sorani) Level 2
Targeted at beginners with Level 1 exposure to the Kurdish language and
those who want to go beyond conversational Kurdish. The objective
of level 2 is to build on the conversation skills gained in Level 1 and also
introduce learners to basic reading and writing in Sorani Kurdish.
Prerequisite to enter Kurdish Level 2: Completion of Kurdish Level 1 or
previous exposure to Sorani Kurdish at a basic level
Kurdish (Sorani) Level 3
Targeted at intermediate learners who have taken Kurdish Level 1 and 2.
The objective of this course is to build on the conversation skills gained
in previous courses with an increased emphasis on reading, writing,
and comprehension. Level 3 is aimed at serious learners of the Kurdish
language. The course will give students the tools to continue to study and
use the language independently.
Prerequisite to enter Level 3: Completion of Kurdish Level 2 or previous
exposure to Sorani Kurdish at an intermediate level

This 80-hour intensive English course is aimed at students seeking
admission to the Academic Preparatory Program (APP) at AUIS. The
majority of the course focuses on improving students’ reading and
listening comprehension at the fundamental English level, with
additional work on basic vocabulary skills.
Students will also become familiar with the three sections of the
TOEFL ITP and learn basic strategies to answer questions on each
section of the test, with the goal of obtaining a higher score on the
TOEFL ITP.

As an increasing number of companies move
to project team-based business models,
demand for project managers has grown
exponentially. PDI’s Project Management
Course is aimed at business professionals and
managers who wish to develop their business
planning responsibilities, and provides
a foundation for successfully planning,
monitoring, measuring and adapting a project
from start to finish.
Taught by a professional, fully experienced
PMP-licensed instructor, participants will be
exposed to essential Project Management
terminology and learn effective ways
of monitoring and controlling projects.

in business environments, and will develop

This course provides a review of international contract management
as an area of theoretical development as well as a field of practice
in Kurdistan and in Iraq. It comprises of the study of the problem
areas of globalization, world economy, and modern approaches to
business organization in the global context. Main blocks of the course
are trends and drivers of globalization, political, economic and legal
environments of international business, business ethics and corporate
social responsibility. Furthermore, the challenges in Iraq and Kurdistan
are discussed in a global environment.
International Contract Management
This course teaches theoretical basics and practical instruments
to manage human resources in companies. The most important
elements of Human Resource Management (HRM) practice are
treated in case studies and simulations. All training elements can be
transferred directly into daily work. Overall the course is outcome-
driven and participants should be able to apply learnings to their
practices.
