Aristophanes was an ancient Athenian poet and playwright born in 445 BC who wrote 46 comedies, 11 of which survive. He is considered one of the most important representatives of ancient Athenian comedy. His play "Birds" was presented in 414 BC and dealt with the establishment of an ideal society of birds, as well as the inevitable failure of such a society. Some of his other important works included "The Wasps" and "Peace." The plot of "Birds" involves two Athenian men who seek to establish a city of birds in the sky to escape human troubles, and they eventually succeed in building the city of "Nephelococcygia," but it faces issues with gods seeking
Ancient Greek theater actors and chorus members wore masks during performances. The masks originated from Dionysian cult rituals but served important purposes in drama by allowing actors to take on different characters rather than playing as themselves. The masks were constructed of fabric soaked in plaster and painted with facial features. Men's masks were typically dark colored while women's were lighter. Satyr masks had goat-like features. Masks in comedies exaggerated facial expressions to provoke laughter from audiences.
