“Perth City Hall is a building of great architectural
significance and beauty. Together with the Kirk of St. John,
it forms the focal point of Central Perth, and, seen from the
Mercat Cross in King Edward Street, it is appreciated at its
majestic best.”
(Perth & Kinross Council - 1995)
Perth’s Mercat Cross was for centuries the
thriving commercial and social Heart of Perth.
Centred here the lifeblood of the local economy
was generated and circulated to the benefit of
everyone in Perth and environs.
Perth City Market Trust aims to create a
Market Hall which will once again bring local
producers together with local consumers to the
2. Beyond the core purpose of a Market Hall we
aim to put the entire building to community
use. A sorely needed Tourist Information Of-
fice will grace the fine foyer; youth enterprise
will flourish in a ‘Youth Hub’ on the first
floor; and the Hall will be crowned by a cafe/
bar; ‘destination’ restaurant and galleries with
panoramic views and terraces.
The Lesser Hall will be a multi-purpose space
combining non-food trading during the day
with a resumption of its former community
use.
Perth City Market Trust brings together all
stakeholder interest groups to generate a sur-
plus for rejuvenation of Perth City Centre.
The principle underpinning social business is
that an affordable price is by definition more
likely to be paid. So local investors in Perth
City Market Hall may obtain secure long term
returns through direct investment in afford-
able, but intensively efficient, use of market
space. This in turn enables local producers
to sell top quality local produce at affordable
prices direct – with minimal financial over-
head - to local consumers.
