3. My Support System
I had a strong support system growing up, and still do today. My parents
divorced when I was eight. They both worked full-time and sometimes
needed assistance meeting all the needs of my younger brother and I. My
paternal grandparents helped fill that role.
My grandparents were financially well off and basically were retired. My
parents would drop us off there in the mornings so we could catch the
bus and they would watch us in the afternoons until my parents got off
work. If we needed to be driven to or from sports practice they were able
to do that for us. When we forgot breakfast or lunch, my grandparents
always made sure we had something to eat. Occasionally, my parents
could not afford something . My grandparents would pay for what we
needed. They always made sure we did our homework after school . They
promoted education and insisted we do well in school.
My grandparents provided a well rounded and caring “second home” for
my brother and I. My support system has lead my to being a successful
and educated adult. I feel I grew up with a very loving supportive family
who always made sure we never went without.
