CUIDEMOS Mexico - harnessing the power of energy
efficiency through the Clean Development Mechanism
Catastrophic climate change will only be avoided if global CO2 emissions are cut by between
50% and 80% by 2050, the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
warned in its fourth assessment report (2007).
A clear warning of the inadequacy of current climate change policy is the International
Energy Agency (IEA) advice that even with the implementation of all current policies,
emissions would still rise 25% by 2030.
Energy efficiency, according to the IEA, would reduce energy related emissions by more than
50% with domestic energy efficiency capable of saving around half that - 20% to 30% of total
abatement required to reach safe levels.
For this reason Cool nrg has pioneered the concept of CDM-DEE (Domestic Energy
Efficiency). CDM-DEE uses the UN’s Clean Development Mechanism to realise mass-scale
residential energy efficiency projects that reduce CO2 emissions and save households
money.
Mass scale, domestic energy efficiency delivers:
• Significant emissions reduction immediately
• Household savings from energy-saving technology – starting with lighting
• Reduced pressure on national energy supply and investment in electricity generation
• Savings for governments that subsidise electricity prices

Pioneering CDM-DEE in Mexico: a Cool nrg programme
Cool nrg has pioneered mass-scale domestic energy efficiency action in developed
countries.
Now it is harnessing the power of the United Nations’ Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)
to tackle the twin challenges climate change and poverty through CDM-DEE in the
developing world.
CDM DEE is the design, development and delivery of proven and simple domestic energy
efficiency technology.
CUIDEMOS Mexico (Campaña De Uso Intelegente De Energia Mexico) will be the first
domestic energy efficiency programme delivered through CDM.
It will distribute, free to householders, 30 million energy-saving lights (CFLs) to low-income
households throughout Mexico. The Program has UN registration, Gold Standard
Accreditation and will distribute the first million CFLs in November 2009.
CUIDEMOS Mexico will:
• Reach 30% of the population, including some of Mexico’s poorest
• Cut emissions by 7.5 million tonnes of CO2 over ten years
• Save households US$165 million per year off their energy bills plus US$200 million
per year on government electricity subsidies
• Save the Mexican government US$585 million in avoided investment in electricity
generation infrastructure
About Cool nrg
Cool nrg International Pty Ltd is is an international company committed to cutting global CO2
emissions through the design, development and delivery of innovative, mass-scale
residential energy efficiency campaigns.
Cool nrg is led by Executive Chairman Nic Frances MBE, Deputy Chairman Paul Ostling
(former Global COO, Ernst & Young), Executive Director Matthew Slatter (former CEO, top-
30 listed Australian company) and Executive Director Andrew Laing (former Director of
Finance, BP Asia).
The company has offices in London, Melbourne, San Francisco, and Mexico City and is
developing further projects in Europe, China, India, Australia and the USA.
It is currently focused on the mass distribution of free energy efficient light bulbs. If
incandescent bulbs are replaced in every household worldwide, global electricity use will
drop by 5% per annum, cutting 400 million tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.
