Past perfect continuous:
had + been + V-ing
• Past perfect continuous tense’de yardımcı fiil
olarak tüm öznelerle had kullanılır.
• Fiilden önce been gelir.
• Fiil –ing takısı alır.
• Subject + had + been V-ing

• We’d been working hard by the time we
saved enough money.
• (Yeterli para biriktirinceye kadar sıkı
çalışmaktaydık)

• She’d been waiting at the bus stop for two
hours when the bus finally came.
• (Otobüs sonunda geldiğinde iki saattir durakta
beklemekteydi)

• Had you been waiting long when she arrived?
• (O geldiğinde uzun zamandır bekliyor
muydun?)

• I couldn’t answer the teacher. I hadn’t been
listening.
• (Öğretmeni cevaplayamadım. Dinlemiyordum)

USE
• 1. Geçmiş bir zamana kadar devam eden
eylem. Sıklıkla “for two hours, all day” gibi
süreç bildiren kelimelerle kullanılır:

• They’d been working for ten years by the time
the company went bankrupt.
• (Şirket iflas ettiğinde on yıldır çalışmaktalardı)

• I had been reading a book all evening when
she came.
• (O geldiğinde tüm akşam kitap okumaktaydım)

2. Geçmişte etkisi olan ve bir süre devam
eden eylemler:
• Tom was very tired when he went home
yesterday evening. He had been riding a bike
all day yesterday.
• (Tom dün akşam eve geldiğinde çok yorgundu.
Dün tüm gün bisklet binmekteydi)

• She was very tired. She had been playing
tennis all yesterday afternoon.
• (O çok yorgundu. Dün tüm öğleden sonra
tennis oynamaktaydı)

• My eyes were red. I’d been chopping onions.
• (Gözlerin kırmızı idi. Soğan doğramaktaydım)
