performed the action.
4. To go from active to passive or passive to
active all you have to do is to follow the steps
that I am about to describe.
We must understand that the subject in the
sentence is the one who performes the
action, and the noun is the one affected by
the action.
Ex. Juan cleans the car
Juan (subject) is the one who cleans the
car.
The car (noun) is the one cleaned.
5. IDENTIFY THE TIME!
This step talks
about identifying
the grammar time
of the sentence,
don´t forget to pay
attention to
progressive
sentences.
6. IDENTIFY THE
SUBJECT
This step talks
about identifying
who performes the
action. Later the
subject will become
in the agent of a
passive voice.
7. IDENTIFY THE
NOUN.
Just identify what is
being affected by
the action, later it
will become in the
subject of the
passive voice.
8. CONTROL THE TIME
WITH THE VERB TO
BE.
Just remember that…
AM, IS, ARE (present)
WAS, WERE (past)
WILL BE (future)
BEEN (past part.)
BEING (progressive)
9. The company is building a new bank in
downtown.
IDENTIFY THE TIME: Present progressive.
IDENTIFY THE SUBJECT: The company.
IDENTIFY THE NOUN: A new bank in
downtown.

10. The subject of the
original sentence
becomes in the agent
and goes with the
word “by”.
The verb must go in
the past participle
form.
The noun of the
original sentence
becomes in the
subject of the passive
voice sentence.
11. A NEW BANK IN DOWNTOWN IS BEING BUILT
BY THE COMPANY.
THE NOUN (a new bank in downtown) is now
THE SUBJECT.
THE SUBJECT (the company) is now THE
AGENT and goes with the word BY.
THE VERB (build) goes on the past participle
form. (built).
THE VERB TO BE controls the sentence by
showing the present form IS and the
progressive form BEING (present progressive).
