- I’m Alan Unsworth – I’m the Reference Librarian at Surry Community College and I just want to briefly introduce you to a few of the services offered by the library, emphasizing the resources that are most relevant to you as faculty members.
- Like all libraries, we have a website, which is linked from the Surry.edu homepage. On the website you will find a library catalog where you can search for books that are within our physical library collection.We also provide on and off-campus access to many article databases, such as LexisNexis and JSTOR. If you would like to make assigned readings of an article within a database, contact me and I can create a persistent link to the article that can be linked on your Blackboard or Moodle site.We also offer a Citation Guide on the library website. We cover MLA, APA, & Chicago styles, plus there are links to a number of other online resources for citation information. This is a good place to refer your students for citation information.
- We also have video collections, which are very popular among students and faculty. The Popular DVD collection, which consists of many classics and new releases, is available to students and faculty, while the Instructional Videos are only available for faculty and staff. We also have access to a couple of streaming video collections. The PBS Video Collection consists of many programs from American Experience, Frontline, Ken Burns, and much more. American History in Video is a brand-new database we are trying out. It consists of hundreds of full-length videos related to all different aspects of American history. I want to point out that the streaming videos will work from on or off-campus for students, staff, and faculty, so you could assign your students to watch a certain video and they could all access that on their own outside of class.
- Coursepages help to take the confusion out of navigating all of the resources available through the library website. It creates a narrowed-down version of the website, that points students directly to the most relevant information sources for a given topic or class. The best part is that we can set up a direct link to the coursepage within your Blackboard or Moodle site, so students can simply go to the class site to begin researching for class assignments and papers. Simply give me an phone call, an email, or stop by the library and I will be happy to create a coursepage for any, and all, of your classes.
- We also offer library instruction – which can be general or highly specialized, it can be on any topic or in any subject area. We have an instruction room in the library where I demonstrate research techniques and resources to students, and we have a computer lab where students can put what they’ve learned to use immediately in order to reinforce the research process. I am always willing to come to your class to provide library instruction, so no matter what type of time constraints you are working within, you can always fit a library component into your course wherever it might be appropriate. The amount of information available on the internet and through other online sources is growing very rapidly, and we really believe that giving students the information literacy and critical thinking skills they need to find and evaluate information is a crucial step in creating successful students and life-long learners.
