Editor's Notes

  1. Why would anyone need a pencil/pen/pda pointer in one? Straightforward advertising would not have done this pen any justice, we knew we had to treat it as separate from the main ‘Pen Range’ campaign – in order for people to use the 3-in-1, we had to create a need for it!
  2. Many of you will recognise this face at San Marco – a lot of us see him daily, but how many people actually stop and chat? This is where our insight came from: by chatting to him, we discovered that Sudoku was going to be BIG. He, his wife and his kids were all very early Sudoku addicts. Sudoku had only been in the UK for a couple of months – only 1 National Press title ran the puzzle, and although it seems like an obvious answer now, no-one knew about it back in April. It was by chatting to people like the guy in San Marco that we spotted a trend before it became a mass addiction
  3. This is how big it became a month later – all the papers were claiming rights to Sudoku!
  4. We presented it to Parker in April and as you can see from this graph of searches for ‘Sudoku’ on Overture – it was May before the phenomenon really took off
  5. But anyone can sponsor a section – and while we are the only advertiser to have a Sudoku sponsorship in any newspaper, this takes care of the Pen and Pencil element of the 3-in-1 but what about the pda stylus….? This is where it gets really clever. No newspaper was offering interactive Sudoku – we approached Avantgo and asked them to CREATE a free Parker Sudoku Channel. We found a new way in which to feed the addiction.
  6. We briefed all the newspapers on a Sponsorship opportunity – The Independent is the only newspaper that offers a true sponsorship. We get ‘sponsored by’ strip on the OBC. And on the Games page we get ‘Sponsored by’, the scribble pad and the big strip running the full length of the Sudoku puzzles. We get this every day, Mon-Sat.
  7. But anyone can sponsor a section – and while we are the only advertiser to have a Sudoku sponsorship in any newspaper, this takes care of the Pen and Pencil element of the 3-in-1 but what about the pda stylus….? This is where it gets really clever. No newspaper was offering interactive Sudoku – we approached Avantgo and asked them to CREATE a free Parker Sudoku Channel.
