This parent cue provides an overview of the lessons that will be covered in student ministry sessions the following week. It discusses that the lessons are intended to spark dialogue between parents and their children about what God is teaching each of them. The Sunday lesson will cover Genesis 1:26-2:25 about humanity being created in God's image, while the Wednesday lesson will challenge students to see God in new ways and consider how he has surprised their families. Parents are encouraged to discuss with their teen how God has proven bigger than their attempts to define him.

God allows evil only for the greater good of us. Therefore, whatever may happen we should strengthen our relationship with God instead of blaming Him. Let us put our trust in Him wholeheartedly. He is a God who loves us and not to punish us.
A look into the Biblical passages that focus on "one another". This is a reflection tool to help you understand the context of your relationships as well as review God's call for us to like together.
Lk. 15:11-31 Then He said: "A certain man had two sons. "And the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.' So he divided to them his livelihood. "And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living. "But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. "Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. "And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything. "But when he came to himself, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 'I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, "and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants."' "And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. "And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.' "But the father said to his servants, 'Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. 'And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; 'for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' And they began to be merry. "Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. "So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. "And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf.' "But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. "So he answered and said to his father, 'Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. 'But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.' "And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. 'It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.'"

Sermon delivered on Sunday September 11, 2011 by Dr. Charles Yoost, Senior Minister at the Church of the Saviour in Cleveland Heights, OH. Dr. Yoost begins the fall sermon series on text messages from God: Did You Get My Call? with the sermon “The Call to Forgive — What a Coincidence!”
Believing that coincidence is really God working incognito, the Lectionary text for this Sunday is the parable of the Unforgiving Servant. What is God saying to us on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack?
Peter is willing to forgive seven times, but Jesus expects us to forgive without measure. That’s easier said than done! Jesus sets the example by forgiving those who crucified him as he hung on the cross. Who do we need to forgive? From whom do we need to ask forgiveness?
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Parent cue vol 3
1. parent cue
What is the parent cue? The Parent Cue is a weekly overview of what we’re talking about in the coming week in our
Student Ministry, along with a cue to help you dialog with your child about those sessions. This cue is intended
not just to be asked by you, but to be responded to by BOTH of you. Use this opportunity to find out what God is
teaching your child, and allow your child to see what God is teaching you as well. Our Wednesday night lessons are
intended to cover a broad range of topics and issues, whereas our Sunday lessons will be providing an overview of
Scripture. These Sunday lessons coincide with the following Wednesday night Team Kids lessons, so that families
with students and children can have discussions together over the same lesson.
rhythm: wonder (Wednesday, September 7)
Scriptures: Genesis 3:1-13
If you’ve been in church for a while, you’ve heard it all and seen it all. You know the stories. You know the songs.
You know the words. Many of us even think we know all about God. We think we have Him figured out. We think
we know everything about Him, and in our lives, He’s very small. But the reality is that we will never fully grasp how
awesome and amazing He is.
Parent Cue: This second week, students will be challenged to look at God in new ways. Many times we find that we
are so familiar with “churchy” descriptions of God that we forget who He really is. And when we forget who God is,
how awesome and surprising He can be, then we are tempted to turn our attention and affection to other things and
our lives fall out of tune. In week two students will be challenged to discover a God who is bigger than our attempts
to define Him. Discuss with your teen ways that God has surprised you and your family with how big He is.
the pinnacle of creation (Sunday, September 11)
Scriptures: Genesis 1:26-2:25
Imago Dei is Latin for the “image of God.” Of all of God’s creation, only man and woman have the distinct honor of
being image bearers. Unfortunately, man was not content and desired to be equal to God. Because he did not obey
God, this ability to bear the image of God would be marred.
Parent Cue: In Psalm 139, we see that God has gone to great details to creat each of us. These verses use the analogy
of God knitting us together in our mother’s womb. The passages that your child(ren) will study this Sunday point to
man and woman being the pinnacle of God’s creation. Encourage your child to consider how God clearly desires a
relationship with everyone who bears His image.
Treasure Verse: “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I
praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” - Psalm 139:13-14
2. lost wonder
By Tim Walker
Life always seems to drift towards a rut, doesn’t it? The “new” always quickly fades and we’re left
wanting more. Okay, life isn’t quite that ominous, but look around you at other Christians, especially those
who have some history at church. We know it all and we’ve seen it all. There are very few surprises. We
listen intently to every new speaker, every new book, every new song, hoping that maybe something new
will spark our interest. Our sense of wonder is dead.
Some might mark this as a symptom of our culture, but the truth is we’ve been longing for wonder for
a long time. Look at John 11. A passage so familiar that it becomes white noise in our heads. It’s the story
of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead--and home to that one Bible verse you knew you could memorize
(John 11:35). Jesus was on His way to Bethany. “When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went
to meet him. But Mary stayed at home. Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother
would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.” Martha always gets
the “shame on you” tone when we read this passage. How dare she talk to Jesus in such a way! But if you
listen to what she said, Martha believes. She believes that Jesus can do great things. She knows that He
could have healed her brother, but she also knows that He still can.
“Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”
“Yes,” Martha said, “when everyone else rises, on resurrection day.”
Martha knew Jesus could do big things. She just didn’t expect them. She thought that He would work in
the same old way He always had--miraculous, nonetheless, but predictable. I’m the same way. I know so
much about God. I know about scripture. I’ve functioned in the culture of Christianity for so long that I
know it too well. I don’t know everything, but I know that God doesn’t always heal when we want Him to -
I’ve seen too many family members die from cancer to know that’s a reality.
I know God sometimes says “no” when I desperately want Him to say “yes.”
I know God says wait when I want Him to make things happen.
I know. I know. I know. So did Martha.
But then Jesus did something that messed up Martha’s knowing: he moved beyond all her
rationalizations. He surpassed her efforts at self-protection, trying to minimize the hurt and
disappointment that life may not turn out the way Martha wanted. Jesus did what Martha completely
didn’t expect Him to do--He raised her brother from the dead. Martha gained back her wonder. She saw
Jesus not only do great things for other people, He did something amazing for her.
Do you want that sense of wonder? Do you want God to blow you away beyond all the boxes you put
Him in? Because despite all our rhetoric about avoiding boxing God in, in our hearts, we lean towards
minimizing and limiting Him. It keeps our faith nice and safe. We don’t get hurt by disappointment. It
also keeps it boring. Don’t you want to read a passage of scripture and just be amazed at the new things
you discover every time you read? Don’t you want to learn new things about this God whom you think
you know so well? Then wouldn’t it be great if all of that knowledge and all of that amazement poured into
your life, into your everyday, mundane routine? The result would be more than just Lazarus being raised
from the dead. You would see some life in your own dead places as well.
That’s the kind of relationship Jesus wants with each one of us. He wants your relationship with Him to
be filled with wonder. He wants to show you new things about Himself, things that consistently push and
pull at the limits we try to put on Him. Maybe then we could all get lost in wonder too.
