Editor's Notes

  1. My name is Erika Nabuurs, and I am a student at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine, in New Westminster. Boucher is the 2nd only accredited Naturopathic Medical School in Canada, and 7th in North America. We have been in existence since 2000 and accredited since 2009. And today I’d like to speak with you about… “The Parallels of Humanitarianism” … a look at the commonalities between Rotarians and Boucherians!
  2. Look Familiar!?! This Historic Rotary Motto has come to define Humanitarianism, and has transformed the lives of millions around the world; including those who benefit from it, as well as those who live by it. And I, as you, am one of them. This powerful little phrase has guided my entire life, even to present day, where I find myself once again among the Heart of Humanity. Boucher is a vibrant community of Healers–in–Training, eager to give of themselves for the wellbeing of others.
  3. I like to say that: Boucherian = Humanitarian
  4. Ndorphins members (Team of Boucher Students) participate in local running events to raise awareness about the benefits of living a balanced lifestyle. The Boucher Garden Club is working to create an educational Community Herb Garden, at New Westminster Pier Park.
  5. Natural Doctors International is the oldest naturopathic global health organization in North America. It offers the opportunity to students and practitioners of holistic health care, to serve the global community. Every year Boucherians attend one of several possible brigades to the Naturopathic Clinic on Ometepe Island, in Lake Nicaragua, to offer Free Naturopathic medical care, and gain an invaluable experience in continuing education and global health. Clinic open Since 2005. 10-day Brigade.
  6. Naturopaths Without Borders. A small group of boucherians went down to Haiti in March 2014, to serve as medical relief and physical support for the Post-Earthquake reconstruction efforts.
  7. Here I’d like to identify the commonalities between Rotary + Naturopatihc Medicine, because we are Similar in Many ways! Our 6 Principles of Naturopathic Medicine parallel the Four-Way Test, as they guide us through our daily practice as Healers.
  8. Have you ever contemplated the depth of meaning in this Motto? Since beginning my journey at Boucher, I’ve learned to take a step back and consider the whole picture …  Take a moment to interpret this image, not just the words but their inherent structure… Would anyone like to share what this image says to them? To me, it says that: SELF is the the Foundation of SERVICE. Moreover, if you look carefully, you’ll see that SELF must be properly balanced to adequately support the offering of SERVICE. Today, I wish to share with you my ever-evolving understanding of the relationship between Service and Self, as I have come to know them all the more intimately throughout this program at Boucher. I would also like to share with you a brief snip-it of the wide variety of Services we offer at the Boucher Teaching Clinic to support the SELF in all its endeavors to serve Humanity.
  9. But Optimal Wellness is so easily Taxed in such a fast-paced society as ours. Can anyone offer a personal example of daily taxation on your health? How about your schedule today? Over the next week? Is it packed from one minute to the next? … Don’t be shy, I’m equally guilty of the same! We are often driven to do more than we can reasonably handle, to offer ourselves in 10 directions at once, and to meet every request… …but Stress and Overwork will Drain us of our Desire and Ability to Serve.
  10. Can you give me some Examples? Positive: getting married, having a baby, buying a new car, getting a puppy! Negative: a busy schedule, endless emails, late for an appointment, multi-tasking (juggling work + home life + volunteering), or bigger stuff… illness
  11. These are the key players that help the body respond to stress. - Our nervous system receives the stimuli from the outside world, - Our brain then processes the stimuli as “Threat to Self” and signals the adrenals (via biochemical messengers) to release cortisol and adrenaline so that our body can respond to the Fight or Flight scenario
  12. This is a simplified version of the Hormone Synthesis Cascade occurring in the Adrenal Glands, leading from the initial precursor of Cholesterol to the finished hormone product of Cortisol. There are many other co-enzymes and intermediate molecules participating along this reaction pathway, but we don’t need to get into that today!! Also, take note of the fact that, Estrogen + Testosterone make use of the same precursor, Cholesterol … Thus a Finite Supply!!
  13. Cortisol has many functions in the body and is one of the hormones associated with the wake- sleep cycle which follows a daily pattern. Cortisol levels naturally fluctuate during the day; it peaks around 8-10am in the morning and is lowest around midnight. This is what Cortisol looks like in optimal wellness, ie: under optimal conditions If chronic stress continues, it leads to an imbalance in cortisol levels. Overtime, if our adrenals are constantly asked to secrete stress hormones, and our nervous system is always on alert we eventually deplete the hormone……which will first result in adrenal fatigue and then adrenal burnout. *** Adrenals (if depleted) steel energy from LV, thus you don’t feel hungry in morning b/c LV doesn’t have glucose energy to clean body out + make it ready for bringing in more food in morning.
  14. Cortisol - Not only does it give us our get up and go, but it also plays an important role in chronic stress response and keeps us alive. If chronic stress continues, then our body becomes out of balance. The longer this continues, the greater the health consequences and the flatter the cortisol curve becomes. ******* Increased abdominal fat, greater amount of health problems. Some of the health problems associated with increased stomach fat are heart attacks, strokes, the development of , higher levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and lower levels of “good” cholesterol (HDL), which can lead to other health problems
  15. Stress involves many areas of the body. We can see the effects of stress manifest as: Blood sugar irregularities-feeling shaky, irritable, thirsty, weak Inhibition of digestion = constipation Stimulation of motility = diarrhea Hormonal problems: PMS, painful periods, abdominal weight gain, migraine headaches
  16. Chronic Stress Really does affect every aspect of our physical and mental state. We’ve already talked about the physical effects it has on our body, but it also affects psyche and behavior What are your body’s stress signals??????? Physical symptoms run the whole gamut of body aches and pains: backache, headache, muscle aches, digestive problems, sleeping problems, palpitations, tightness of muscles of the stomach or jaw, dizziness, skin rash, sexual dysfunction or illness. Psychological symptoms are evident in feelings and in thinking patterns anxiety, restlessness, worry, fear, tension, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and problems in memory or understanding things, moodiness, depression, fatigue, sadness, loneliness, low motivation or energy, defensiveness, blaming others, scapegoating, and obsessive (repetitive) thinking. Behavioral signs and symptoms are evident in daily personal activities: increased eating, smoking, or drinking; general restlessness with tapping of fingers or foot, grinding teeth, or nail biting; procrastination; diminished productivity or efficiency; being late; skipping work; being snappish; having accidents. Interpersonal signals are evident in relationships with other people: difficulty maintaining good relationships, short temper, diminished patience and difficulty listening to other, withdrawal from others, avoidance of social activities, marital and family problems.
  17. The most accurate way to discuss Stress vs Non-Stress, is to distinguish the roles of the Sympathetic vs ParaSympathetic Nervous System. PNS keeps body’s energy use as low as possible while conducting vital housekeeping tasks such as digestion, absorption, and elimination. In a Parasympathetic state, the majority of the blood volume is delivered to the organs of digestion, for adequate digestion, absorption, assimilation of nutrients, and elimination of wastes. This is a state of REST + DIGEST SNS sends the body into a state of energy demand and consumption. When you experience stressful stimuli, (like meeting a lion in the jungle, or approaching a deadline) your body sets off the reaction series previously discussed, which activates the sympathetic FIGHT or FLIGHT state. DIVERTS BLOOD SUPPLY away from organs of digestion, TO LARGE Peripheral MUCSLE GROUPS TO RUN FROM DANGER SPEEDS UP + INTENSIFIES HEART’S OUTPUT…to increase OXYGEN + NUTRIENT AVAILABILITY to muscles, for running SPEEDS UP + INTENSIFY BREATHING RATE…INCREASE OXYGEN SUPPLY TO MM INCREASE PUPIL DIAMETER … ALLOWS MORE LIGHT TO ENTER EYES AND MORE ACUTE VISION FOR RUNNING ON ANY TERRAIN INCREASE BLOOD SUGARS FOR ENERGY pulse quickens, blood pressure ruses Increased respiration (hyperventilation) Blood is diverted from non-essential organs to the survival organs peripheral blood vessels constrict (cold hands and feet) blood sugar levels rise additional red blood cells are released (to carry extra oxygen) immune function is suppressed CONSEQUENCES: ·      slows OR even shuts down digestive system, d/t diverted blood flow away from non-essential organs, to periphery. ·      Blood flow to the skin is reduced. ·      Growth, Reproduction, Immune system all put on Hold.
  18. In order to sustain life and maintain optimal health, these two system need to be in perfect metabolic equilibrium with each other. If one system is constantly being activated it will create imbalances which manifest in the body as signs and symptoms of distress. IT OFTEN REQUIRES CONSCIOUS EFFORT TO INITIATE YOUR PNS + RE-ESTABLISH METABOLIC EQUILIBRIUM
  19. Anyone have any Ideas!?! Then start clicking in the answers… ALL of These and More are offered at our Boucher Teaching Clinic More = Vitamin injection therapy; Bowen Therapy; Emotional Counseling; Treatment of Acute + Chronic Disease
  20. This is what we offer at the Boucher Teaching Clinic – go through above list… … because as Students of Naturopathic Medicine, we’re learning both the art and the science of RESTORATION and REVIVAL, of all Body, Mind, + Spirit … To Help People, Help Themselves, so that they may continue to contribute whole-heartedly, in SERVICE to all Humanity.
  21. As a Thank You for your invitation to speak with you today, I’d like to offer everyone a 3-Visit Package Card, to experience our Boucher Teaching Clinic first hand. It’s a great opportunity to Care for Yourself, to have your care overseen by Licensed Naturopathic Doctors at a fraction of the cost, and to support the education of Student Clinicians who bring with them the most current medical research, naturopathic and conventional alike.
