Paragraphs are used to organize longer pieces of text into prose. A paragraph contains a single main idea or topic that is discussed. It includes a topic sentence that states the main idea and supporting details that provide evidence and explanation about the topic sentence. A paragraph should only discuss one idea and its parts include a topic sentence, either explicit or implicit, and supporting details.

Topic sentence - Main idea of your
paragraph
Francis is a excellent student. She is intelligent. She is
responsible. Francis always does her homework, and she is
never late for class. As a result of her hardwork, Francis is one
of the best students in school.
Main idea
14. College and university sports team have nicknames. Most are
common, such as the Bears, Lions, and Tigers. However, some are
unusual. For instance, the University of California at Irvine is
nicknamed “Anteaters”. The University of Washburn’s sports team
are called “Thunderducks”. And perhaps the strangest of all
