there is no such thing as a less sexist class system or a less
homophobic patriarchy or one of the contributions in this
anthology puts it, in this era of globalized capitalism, having
intestinal worms marks as you as not so beautiful and
definitely from the third world.

coming out is a never-ending process because people from
different layers of our relationships have not always been
ready to abandon their prejudice and accepting lesbians as
regular human beings with intelligence, emotions and human
rights. For many lesbians, the first and most important
obstacle, the immediate family, still has to be overcome. One
poet, who could have joined us here: had to pull out after her
daughter threatened to declare war.We can only imagine,
then, what our contributors have to risk, lose – and wine.
Lesbian existence, even in claustrophobic societies can be its
own society.
9. tibok: hearbeat of the Filipino lesbian
Who are the Filipino lesbian? Why do they exist? What are
they called? What do they look like? How do they live? What
do they want? How do they make love? It’s hard for the
uninitiated not to ask.
10. tibok: hearbeat of the Filipino lesbian
As lesbians de-construct, so are they re-defined male0like or
female-like, males trapped in a female body, women sexually
attracted to them, womanly woman attracted to each other,
butch and women-not-too-feminine attracted to each other,
women attracted to straight men, gay men and other
women, a gay man trapped in a lesbian’s body.

gusto niyang maging lalake o mayroon siyang anumang
bahid ng tinatawag na “penis envy.” Ang individuality ng
iisnag tao ay hindi dapat ikinakahon sa kung anuman ang
idinidiktang “gender roles” ng lipunan. Ang anyo ay hindi
pagkatao.

Lesbian Studies – Maragaret Cruikshank “a single book cannot
presume to speak for all lesbian researchers.”
17. But what is Lesbian Studies?
A definitive answer would be impossible who has ever
thought to ask what “Heterosexual Studies” are, and if they
did ask, it would turn out that all courses in the humanities,
social sciences, fine arts, media studies, urban studies,
women’s studies etc have touched upon or focused on some
aspect of heterosexual studies. Likewise, Lesbian Studies can
be seen as a critical approach to any of these disciplines.
18. What about women’s studies?
As year after year ofWomen’s Studies curricular-course titles,
book lists, syllabi, teaching perspectives – typically revealed
little concern for, or knowledge of a perspective other than of
white, middle-class, heterosexuals, many of the initial
enthusiasts had to think again.
20. What about gay studies?
University of Amsterdam – Dokumentatiencentrum
Honostudies (Homosexual Studies Resource Centre)
University of Utrecht – Homostudies program
Siegen, Germany – Homo Sexual Studies Centre
Sorbonne, Grance – Groupe de receherches et
‘d’edutdesessual’ homosexuality et les homosexualities
among others
21. What about mainstreaming?
Separate lesbian studies
programs would provide the
intellectual space and
intensity for advancing the
discipline. Mainstreaming,
on the other hand, could
provide all students with the
right to be educated from a
Lesbian Studies perspectives
as one of many perspectives.
22. Lesbian Studies Herstorically
Lesbian Studies have been conducted for millennia the world
over. In short, Lesbian Studies have always been with us.

23. Lesbian Studies in Universities
Cross-Canada (1987) Survey of Lesbian Studies content
within Women’s Studies and the rather dismal results, the
Lesbian Studies’ Coalition decided to try another tactic and
ask the same schools to send a representative to speak on
Lesbian Studies at Concordia University. This turned out to be
quite successful as it made theWomen’s Studies xWomen’s
Centres contacted ask themselves, who is doing Lesbian
studies and if no one is, why not? In November 1988, a Cross-
Canada Exchange on Lesbian Studies was held at the Simone
de Beauvoir Institute.
24. Lesbian Studies in Francophone
Institutions x Organizations
What seems to be a given
trend toward
institutionalizing Lesbian
Studies in English Canada,
has yet to take a toe-hold
in Francophone academia.
25. Lesbian Studies – A Student Struggle
Lesbian Studies has to happen, but when and how it will
materialize at institutions across the country will very much
depend on the individuals present, and often on student
activism around the issue. The Lesbian Studies Coalition of
Concordia is a case in point. Our motto has bee, Lesbian
Studies, Ph.D. year 2000! From a 1991 perspective, it doesn’t
seem so far off….
26. Sinag ni anna leah sarabia
It is good that I forget
Very easily now, and that
When I can remember anything,
I cannot tell which is past
Or present or future.
Remembering is a tricky thing.
What is ugly becomes enchanting,
What is painful sometimes
Does not exist anymore.
