Papua New Guinea is an island country located in Oceania. It has a population of over 6 million people, with over 800 indigenous languages spoken. Papua New Guinea gained independence from Australia in 1975. It has a constitutional monarchy government and Christianity is the dominant religion, adopted through missionary work in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rugby is the most popular sport and traditional art forms include wood carving, singing, and dancing.
