Palembang is the capital city of South Sumatra province in Indonesia and was once the capital of the powerful Buddhist Srivijaya Kingdom. It has a population of over 1.5 million people and is the second largest city in Sumatra. Major projects underway include light rail transit and plans to build motor racing circuits. Islam is the predominant religion, though there are also Buddhist, Christian and Hindu minorities. The local language is Palembang Malay and the city is known for its signature dish of pempek fish cakes served with spicy cuko sauce.
