2. THEME
The theme for my coffee booklet is to introduce Chinese Fishing Village in Malaysia,
Selangor. From my research, a fishing village is a village that usually located near fishing
ground, with an economy based on catching fish and harvesting seafood. However, fishing had
been the main source of income for people in the village but this is becoming more challenging
for the reason of bad weather, people are not interest with fishing and etc. I think this is a good
trip experience that pure-breed Malaysian life a trip out to the peninsula’s three east coast places
which is Kuala Selangor, Sekinchan and BaganDatoh. I would like to introduce the good element
behind all of this interest places and also their kampong life style, religion place and seafood
restaurant.

3. INTRODUCTION TO KUALA SELANGOR
Kuala Selangor is a town located in Selangor, Malaysia. Kuala Selangor is capital of an
administrative district of the same name. “Kuala” means rivermouth in the Malay language, and
Kuala Selangor is a small town where the Selangor River (sungai Selangor) meets the sea. Kuala
Selangor is a coastal town located about 50km north of Klang, 63km from Shah Alam, and the
capital of Selangor prior to moving to Klang, to Kuala Lumpur, then to Shah Alam.
Historical
According to history, Kuala Selangor has had settlements from as early as the 16th century, Kuala
Selangor was ruled under the Malacca Empire, after that it was an old royal capital of Selangor.
Kuala Selangor was consequered by Dutch in 1784 while attempting to expand their base in
Mallaca (Melaka) for a share in the tin trade of Perak and Selangor. Bukit Melawati is a hill
overlooking Kuala Selangor and the Strait of Malacca. The Dutch destroyed the existing
fortification on the hill during their 1784 invasion, and built a European-style castle, naming it
Fort Atlingsburg after their commander. By the end of the 17th century, the Bugis conquered it
and in 1875, the Selangor government was formed.

Great attraction
There are a couple of nice restaurants where they mainly serve fresh seafood. Restoran Kuala Selangor is
where people enjoy a very nice local meal at Pasir Penampang.
The main economy activities in Kuala Selangor is related to the seafood, including fish catching,
harvesting seafood, seafood product processing, fresh seafood.

5. Especially, processed seafood whole selling. The main activities in Kuala Selangor is seafood
processing , the product processed here including dried anchovy, dried shrimp, dried fish and
salted fish. This is a popular major tourist center at north of Selangor with it historical value,
firefly, eagle feeding and seafood.
This Chinese temple Qi Jian xian shi fo zu miao,located at Pasir Penambang, Kuala Selangor.
Many visitors are seen offering candles and incense in this place of worship. From afar, one
could see this strange looking Chinese temple with a cave looking structure builded on its top. I
believe the design is to make the temple looks as it was in the mountains like those in China.

6. INTRODUCTION TO SEKINCHAN
Sekinchan is a small town located in the state of Selangor, Malaysia. It is about 102km of the
north of Kuala Lumpur, 28 km from Kuala Selangor. Sekinchan is a little town in the middle of
the main rice-bowl area of the Selangor, in the Sabak Bernam district. It is one of the major rice
producing areas of Malaysia.
Sekinchan is Chinese mean “village suitable for plantation” ,the land and weather is suitable for
farming of paddy, fruits and palm tree. It is the highest rice production per acre in Malaysia.
Total farming land paddy and fruit is about 4,300 acres. People can see wide paddy field and
enjoy the beauty of fishing village.
Historical
In the of 1920s, Sekinchan is a small fishing village, the main fishing area is Bagan, Bagan is the
birthplace of Sekinchan. The early inhabitants are almost all Teow Chew who are also fishermen
who depend on fishing for their livelihood. This small fishing village, then gradually move the
population from outside come in, and eventually developed into today’s scale.
In the year of 1953, in order to segregate the villager from the early Malayan Communist
Partyinsurgents. The villagers are isolated, and hence formed the Site A, B, C and Bagan. It is a
coastal rice planting area, ithas a unique geographical environment, Sekinchan is not only have
broad paddy field but also rich in fish, people named it as “Land Of Plenty”.
At time of British colonial era, the Teow Chew villagers of coastal area called Sekinchan as “
Ang Mo Gang” due to a lot of British people were staying here. Meanwhile Hokkien people call
it as “Sixteenth Gi’, as Sekinchan is located 16 miles from Kuala Selangor. Both names are still
being called by the old generation nowadays. The total population is achieving 20,000 peoples
and 60% is Chinese, 30% is Malay and 10% is other races. The main economy activities are
agriculture and fishing industry. Total farming land is about 4700 acres, and there more than 300
fishing trawlers in Sekinchan.

7. Great Attraction
There are "seasons" for nice, green, scenic paddy fields, so people really blessed to be able to
enjoy the luscious green landscape in Sekinchan at this time of the year.
Bagan is the main fishing village in Sekinchan, this fishing village is located along the river and
small seaport, south-west of the town. The economy of Bagan is dominated by fishing industry.
This fishing village will become very quiet after all the fishing boat go to the ocean for their
catching at the morning.

8. The two main industries in Sekinchan are farming and fishing. Since these two industries are
highly depend to the weather, the villagers always play for calm of ocean and rich in harvest.
There are a lot of Chinese temples and Churches in Sekinchan.The main Chinese temple we
should visit is Nan Tian Temple, a temple in the middle of paddy field.
Sekinchan is a quaint town famous for its fresh seafood. It’s actually quite a small town after
TanjungKarang/Kuala Selangor. Sekinchan is famous for its paddy fields & fresh seafood.
Villager and visitor certainly get share of excitement amidst the peaceful & scenic town.

9. Seafood is another one of the many chaerms of the quiant town. The row of restaurant right in
front of the fishing jetties is the reason why people are willing to travel all the way to Sekinchan
just to satisfy their cravings for fresh seafood. Most of the signature dishes of the restaurant
especially their famous seafood dishes are derived from the Teow chew style of cooking.

10. INTRODUCTION TO BAGAN DATOH
BaganDatoh is a small township around 28 miles (45.06 km) west of TelukIntan, in the state
of Perak, Malaysia. It is situated south-west of Ipoh city, the state capital.
The main economic activity in BaganDatoh is fishing. There are also, however, many coconut
plantations nearby, visible along the road to BaganDatoh from TelukIntan.
Great Attraction
There are also a few fishing villages scattered around BaganDatoh, for example Sungai Tiang
and Sungai Burong, and their corresponding seaside village Bagan Sungai Tiang and Bagan
Sungai Burong.On the way from TelukIntan there will be a few small township which are
HutanMelintang, Selekoh and SimpangTiga. One popular spot for angling is Sungai Dulang,
situated about 8 km from BaganDatoh. It is famous for lobster fishing where an angler's night
spent there could harvest up to 5 kilograms of lobsters.

11. Kampung Sungai Tiang, stilt village in BaganDatoh, Malaysia Perak. Houses are typical Asian
water village construction. The entire village is served by water from narrow pipe that runs along
the top of the wooden plank jetty.
There is a busy fishing community of mostly Teow Chew Chinese in an area called Bagan on the
banks of a sheltered inlet. Numerous fishing boats were seen returning to harbour in the early
afternoon to unload their catch. They stilt built wooden fishing boats in the tradisional way here.

12. INTRODUCTION TO SUNGAI BESAR
Sungai Besar is a coastal town in the district of SabakBernam in Selangor, Malaysia. The town is
located about 120 km north of Kuala Lumpur.
Population
Sungai Besar's population is estimated to be around 23,000 of which 43% are within 20 to 55
years old. From that total, around 73 percent are Malays (Banjar&jawa), Chinese (23%) and
Indian (3.5%)
Majority of its people are working as farmers and fisherman, as well as working in coconut, padi
planting, and palm oil plantations. The town becomes the centre of administration for
SabakBernam district as many government offices and local authority centre are located there.
Great Attraction
Sungai Besar, SabakBernam, Malaysia Perak. The street that filled with old wooden shops that
dream about the past with the old style building and the life of villager life in this old and
memorable old town. Most of the villager started their own business as their daily income by
selling self-planted vegetable and daily use product.
