Equipment Management for
Clinical Environments
Founded originally as Fairfield Medical
Products in the late 1960’s Paladin has
a history of clinical expertise.
                                          Paladin products are
                                          designed to retrofit on to
                                          existing Fairfield Rail
                                          installations.

We have a long history of:
                                          * Clinical interface
                                          * Problem solving
                                          * Exceeding client expectations

                                          Infection Control has been a
                                          high design focus ever since
                                          the
                                          product was developed.
Shared Responsibility

                        We have a shared
                        responsibility to provide a
                        design with technology
                        giving clinicians control over
                        their environments AFTER
                        THE FACT of construction
                        and installation.

                        After the completion of
                        construction, clinical teams
                        are left to “deal” with
                        whatever was conceived
                        during the design process.
                        They should be given tools
                        to “manage” the
                        environment.
Technology Integration:
                 Those who get it…..

                     Humanscale Stryker

                             Healthcare Facilities

                 Seamless integration of various
                 technology.

These companies have integrated a rail
system as a standard in many of their
                 applications.

Each supports the other with a basic
                 common element, the equipment rail.
A seamless approach to
equipment management.
You can attach the rail on
              to anything….and you can
               attach anything on to the
                                      rail
Triangle Of Care, the relationship
between Caregiver, Patient
and Technology must be
kept in the forefront of
everything we do.
With that in mind . . .

      We have Good news,
       and we have Bad
            news!
The Good News is that after a
  construction or renovation project,
you will move into a new
     environment and will have
    new carpeting, new lighting,
new furniture and new wallpaper etc.
“Utopia General Hospital”
The goal of every design professional.
The Bad News comes in the
     form of a question:

Can you name one hose, tube,
cable or wire that is going to
go away just because you are
   moving into a new unit?
A patient room is nothing more than a
dysfunctional application of dissimilar
technologies!
                       Results of traditional designs

Process Improvement Today
There are several proven varieties of
                        integrated process improvement to
extend the lessons of the original
                        Toyota “Kaizan” program into
                        healthcare facilities.
At a clinical level, the basic key
                        elements of process improvement
                        are as simple as providing:

                        WHAT you need….
                        WHERE you need it and
                        WHEN you need it.

Integration of a rail and accessories
program is the perfect facilitator for
                        process improvement initiatives,
even if not in place at the time of
                        design.
Integration of Equipment Rail in to aesthetic
design. Simple and unobtrusive
is key to preserving the value of the owner’s
investment
Finding a balance
between form and
function, Paladin
Equipment Management
Rail allows the design
team to incorporate any
Wilsonart color into the
equipment rail solution.
EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT AND
INFECTION CONTROL APPLICATIONS
Traditional “norms”: Contractors spend
hours aligning and attaching devices
mandatory in patient care areas to the wall
with “standard” anchor devices.
The resulting damage is seldom realized
until changes are made, either through user demand
or supply channel contract modifications
All too often we see issues
we like to call the
“Swiss Cheese Syndrome”
……common in almost
every facility.

     Corian
Or the….”I didn’t think that double
sided tape would stick that well.“
                                  Also, the ever popular
                                  magic gloves box trick.
The stark reality of the damage, especially
when made to dry wall or laminate, is both time
consuming and costly from both repair and lost
revenue points of view.
The utilization of rail and accessories
for mounting hand sanitizers, wipes,
sharps containers and paper towel
dispensers achieves a major goal…..
                                      …Obsolescence has
                                       been obsoleted!!!!
As seen in Materials Management Magazine.
Note the difference in set up over the sink between
the picture on the left, and the one on the right.

  EVIDENCE BASED SOLUTIONS:
These changes took place after only
6 months from the opening of a
600 bed facility, and were made possible
  without shutting the rooms down,
through the use of a rail system.
The use of the rail takes the guess work away
from the A & D component of the process.
No longer does it matter what it looks like on paper….the
users get to deploy the devices as they see fit, in the
actual space it is being used.
Architectural detail:

architects and
equipment planners
alike.
Additional rails may be added at
any time should more space be
required or technology changes.
Non-code compliant modifications,
leading to compromised
safety issues. If we do not provide
                                    adequate flexibility
                                    and adaptability on the
                                    front end of the design
                                    process, users will
                                    make it work some
                                    how.
The bedside shown in the previous slide went
from worst case scenario to best practice,
economically and easily, with no disruption of
patient care.

Simple expansion of
services, on demand by the
end user will guard against
any unforeseen future
technology.
Gas expansion can be done NON-INVASIVELY
by a simple addition of a gas
block hose and connector to an existing in wall
outlet.

Prepare for surge populations
with the addition of rail and
gas blocks to any waiting area
supported by portable tanks.
Blocks can be configured to meet existing
supply configurations….any style outlet on
any wall.

University of Florida, Shands Alachua General Hospital
Splitter blocks can be added to existing
outlets to multiply services and then taking
the weight load of the actual flow meters and put
them on the rail via gas blocks.
3 hook hanger with 9
clips
Large wire basket often used to stock
par levels of supplies for new admissions.
Single and 3 hook hangers for use
with resuscitation devices and other
hanging supplies.
6 clip organizer for placement of
“stat” use supplies, reduces infection
control risk common with drawer use.
Product specific mounts for the Welsh
Allyn 767/777 series of
diagnostic instruments.
GCX adapter plate to attach owner
furnished GCX channel to a Paladin rail.
Channel adapter kits may also mount vertical
channels from other manufacturers such as
Humanscale and Ergotron.
Swing arm pole holder for use in a GCX
channel with infusion/syringe pumps or
Vapotherm device.
The large angle shelf for additional
patient monitors or other
clinical support devices.
Fold down shelf for procedures
or equipment placement.
Applied infection control mounting
for any manufacturers brand.
Holder for Sharps container
and paper towel dispenser.
Single gloves box holder
Double gloves box holder
A variety of 3 box gloves
holders
Quad mount gloves containers
or just the kit to adapt the hospital’s existing
wire holders, horizontal and vertical.
Miscellaneous mounting
adapters for a variety of
respiratory support devices.
