SHOPPING
AREAS
Orchard Road is a 2.2 kilometre-long street that is the retail and
entertainment hub of Singapore. It is a major tourist attraction, in
addition to being the most popular shopping enclave in the city-
state. Often, the surrounding area is known simply as Orchard
partly because the MRT station that serves the vicinity is named
Orchard.
China Town is historically any ethnic enclave of expatriate Chinese
and Taiwanese people. Trading centres populated predominantly by
Chinese men and their native spouses long existed throughout
Southeast Asia. Emigration to other parts of the world from China
accelerated in the 1860s with the signing of the Treaty of Peking
(1860), which opened the border for free movement.
Little India is an ethnic neighbourhood found in Singapore that
has Tamil cultural elements and aspects of other cultures. Little
India lies to east of the Singapore River—across from Chinatown,
located west of the river—and north of Kampong Glam. Both areas
are part of the urban planning area. The area is more commonly
known as Tekka in the local Tamil community. Mustafa” in Little
India is a major shopping spot.
Bugis Street is in the city-state of
Singapore, was renowned internationally
from the 1950s to the 1980s for its nightly
gathering of trans women, a phenomenon
which made it one of Singapore's top tourist
destinations during that period.
Vivo City-The largest
shopping mall in Singapore.
Located in the Harbour
Front precinct. VivoCity's
iconic architecture sets it
apart from the traditional
box format of many existing
retail developments in the
region as it includes event
spaces, al fresco dining by
the 300 m long Promenade
and a large roof-top
amphitheatre. The
Promenade and the
entrance area with the
water features a popular
place for children to play

National Museum of Singapore
The National Museum of Singapore is the oldest museum
in Singapore. Its history dates back to 1849 when it was
started as a section of a library at Singapore Institution.
After several relocations, the Museum was relocated to
its permanent site at Stamford Road at the Museum
Planning Area in 1887.
The Museum is one of the four national museums in the
country, the other three being the two Asian Civilisations
Museums at Empress Place Building and Old Tao Nan
School, and the Singapore Art Museum.
The National Library in Singapore is located on an
11,304-square metre site between Bugis Junction and
the Bras Basah Complex at 100, Victoria Street. The new
building a 16-storey, two-block development situated in
the city's Civic District, replaces the old National Library
at Stamford Road, which closed on 31 March 2004.

million visitors a year today, and over 17 million visitors up to
the year 2003 when it celebrated its silver jubilee.

accomplishments of both the arts and the sciences through
the ages, along the lines of Leonardo da Vinci's Flying
Machine, a Kongming Lantern, and a high-tech robotic fish.
The museum opened with an exhibition of a collection of the
Belitung shipwreck cargo, and Tang dynasty treasures that
were discovered and carefully preserved by Tilman Walter
fang of Seabed Explorations NZ Ltd.
New Water Plant

Utilities Board. More specifically,
it is treated wastewater
(sewage) that has been purified
using dual-membrane (via
microfiltration and reverse
osmosis) and ultraviolet

conventional water treatment
processes. The water is potable

humans, but is mostly used for
industry requiring high purity
water.
