Esmeralda Santiago moved from Puerto Rico to Brooklyn at age 13 with her mother and siblings. She struggled to adapt to her new school because she couldn't speak English well. After moving to a new school and taking placement tests, she was placed in advanced classes. Her guidance counselor, Mr. Barone, encouraged her to think about her future career. When she expressed interest in becoming a model after seeing a beauty pageant on TV, Mr. Barone suggested auditioning for the High School of Performing Arts, a specialized public high school in New York. He and other teachers helped prepare Esmeralda for the audition in hopes of giving her opportunities beyond her current school.
