Data on the Spanish population, blood donations, and transfusions from 1994 to 2011 were analyzed to assess trends in plasma collection and use. While plasma collection increased over 77% during this period, the use of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) for transfusion decreased by 5% when adjusted for population changes. The rate of FFP transfusions per 1000 people decreased 17.4% and the ratio of FFP to red blood cell transfusions fell 37.4%, suggesting a shift toward more appropriate indications for and use of plasma.
