3. History
■ Department for International Development (DfID): Britain's aid agency
■ Aid to developing countries emerged in its modern form in the 1960s
■ There has been argument about its effectiveness and where the money was actually
going
■ Policy was introduced by the coalition government in 2010
■ It is effective until 2015
4. The Issue
■ 0.7% national income goes towards overseas aid
■ "When times are tough as they are now", then we
must make sure that it is well spent
■ Goal is to target the people and places that need it
the most
5. Why?
■ Helping the poor is the right thing to do
■ Helping other countries prosper means potential trading partners
■ " strategy is to attack the root causes of poverty, rather than just trying to treat the
symptoms. We look for ways to target UK cash at long-term solutions rather than
‘quick fixes’.
■ UK's responsibility to stabilize areas of conflict and terrorism
6. Actions
Making sure that the money goes to people who need it most
■ Ended aid to 16 countries
■ Identified 28 countries that need it most and will have the most impact
■ Increased aid to fragile states that are at risk of terrorist attacks (ex: Pakistan)
Making sure the right organizations get the money
■ Gave money to 43 organizations, but now money only goes to 39 organizations
■ More money to well known organizations (ex: UNICEF)
Following the money
■ "payment by results"
■ Independent Commission for Aid Impact- asses all aid spending
7. Comparison to United States
■ United States Agency for International Development
■ "most aid programs have not been evaluated for the purpose of determining their
actual impact."
■ The Obama Administration’sQuadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review
■ Recent partnership with Google in Rwanda
8. Recent Past
■ Syrian Refugee Crisis
■ Second largest bilateral donor- total of £1.12 billion since 2012
■ 7 September- UK will accept up to 20,000 Syrian refugees over the next 5 years
9. ■ "Britain will act with our head and our heart, providing
refuge for those in need while working on long term
solutions to this crisis. As I said earlier in the week,
that means bringing to an end to the conflicts that are
driving so many to flee, including the bloodbath that
has engulfed Syria." -David Cameron
