As an outdoors enthusiast and member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, I have a strong appreciation for the life lessons taught by hiking and interacting with the natural world. I also have experience as a recreational summer camp teacher, and I support the mission of wilderness-based educational organizations such as Outward Bound.

A pilot club was launched in Weston, Florida where students toured an animal rescue vehicle named in Lois Pope's honor.

Through summer programs, students engage in college tours, guest speakers, and camps focused on science, technology, engineering, and math. - 2. Outward Bound • As an outdoors enthusiast and member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, I have a strong appreciation for the life lessons taught by hiking and interacting with the natural world. I also have experience as a recreational summer camp teacher, and I support the mission of wilderness-based educational organizations such as Outward Bound.
- 3. Outward Bound: A Non-Profit Organization • A nonprofit organization with five locations in the United States, Outward Bound began as a collaboration between a progressive German educator and a British shipping company owner during World War II. The original program was centered in the North Sea and designed to give young sailors open-water survival skills. American instructor Josh Miner brought the adventure-based educational concept to the United States in the early 1950s, established the first American Outward Bound School in 1961. The school formed the foundation of the present network of wilderness courses and specialized programs for groups and professionals, as well as its community-focused learning centers.
- 4. Outward Bound’s Mission • One of the most valuable aspects of Outward Bound’s mission is provided by the affiliated group Expeditionary Learning (EL). The chartered organization tailors educational programming to the needs of at-risk youth. EL’s whole-school reform model approach currently serves over 150 primary and secondary schools throughout the United Sates. Learning studies overseen by EL instructors are academically demanding, involving a mix of case studies, fieldwork, and service projects. Engaging teacher and students in focused goals, EL motivates participants in a wide range of urban, rural, and suburban settings. In all, Outward Bound serves more than 70,000 students and educators across America each year through Expeditionary Learning and related initiatives.
- 5. Outward Bound’s Close Knit Community • One of the key attributes that has defined Outward Bound’s success over the years is its close knit community of active alumni. Past students are encouraged to participate in ongoing activities that include open houses, field projects, and community events. One recent event presented the narrative of a veteran's ascent of Mount Lobuje undertaken in tandem with the nonprofit group Soldiers to the Summit. The event raised money for a scholarship fund while reinforcing the educational and emotional value of wilderness experiences in a group setting.
