Outspoken audiovision2

Editor's Notes

  1. 75 volunteers a week read hour-long segments from 7 Jersey papers Monday thru Friday. The reader selects the news, so the listener hears the news as though they are listening to a newscast, vs. Newsline, where the listener goes through a menu and selects articles. A link on how to volunteer is on our website. Last year we had 233 volunteers who donatedAlmost 4500 hours – most in Audiovision, and some doing clerical work or re-winding tapes throughout the building.
  2. On your kiosk, you will have access to Audiovision through this icon.
  3. Your Outspoken library kiosk has a link set up to our Audiovision streaming site. Nothing on the site requires a password except “Registered Streaming Service Users Click Here.” Customers can use the streaming site at your library and you can show them how to register at your kiosk for an individual home streaming account. I will cover the streaming service in more detail when we discuss listening options. You can listen to what is currently being broadcast by clicking on the Listen Live link on this page. You can also use the Audiovision web site as a how-to information manual for your library staff and your customers. I’m now going to walk through selected options on our Audiovision web site, which provides general information about Audiovision as well as streaming access.Just FYI – some helpful links that I will not cover are: how to donate, how to volunteer, our contact information, and any special announcements.
  4. Many of our listeners follow us faithfully and want to make certain they know when their favorite show is on.To get the schedule, they can:Download it from the download broadcast schedule link on the home pageSelect the Broadcast Schedule link, which lets them either select a day of the week and listen to the streamed schedule – or scroll down and look at a large-print version onlineCall Audiovision and ask for Large Print, cassette, or Braille schedule to be mailedOnce you get your kiosk, call me if you want a supply of schedules for your library.
  5. Just for your reference since I already covered – the Audiovision Radio Reading Service link explains what Audiovision is and what papers are covered.
  6. You can listen to Audiovision in any of the following ways:  Over-the-air DTV BroadcastReceived on New Jersey Network (NJN) Channels 50.3, 58.3, 52.3, and 23.3Under FCC regulations, a radio reading service for the blind can broadcast on a public channel as long as the intention is to serve people with print disabilities. We have a copyright disclaimer at the beginning of each newscast indicating that the content is intended for people with print disabilities. We have been broadcasting for many years on TV under the secondary audio programming feature – but this was a feature of the individual TV model. We are continuing to broadcast on TV since the digital conversion on a sub-channel of NJN. Because of the prevalence of cable, now we are now reading many more people with Audiovision. We negotiated carriage with the 3 main cable carriers in NJ. Each carrier’s technology is different, so each cable company requires a different technical solution. Just to give you an idea of the difficulty of the conversion – President Obama delayed the digital conversion in 2009 from February until June – and many cable companies still weren’t ready with all the technical aspects. It took us an additional year to get all 3 major cable companies up and running, adding them one at a time as NJN worked with them individually to iron out the technical details.Instructions for each cable carrier are slightly different and involve using the remote to access the menu and step through the settings mode to re-set the audio language channel. Be aware that we have no video, so once the Audiovision sub-channel is reached, you will hear Audiovision but see whatever video feed NJN is broadcasting. Also, we are using the Spanish language sub-channel on NJN, so the listener must re-set the language to English when finished listening to Audiovision or he will hear Spanish on whatever channel he goes to next.Audiovision is broadcast on Comcast, Verizon, and Cablevision. This web page gives the NJN channel number for each and a link to the specific instructions to get the NJN sub-channel with Audiovision for each carrier. Customers can get instructions from the web or call our 800 number for assistance.Audiovision streaming site: www.audiovision-nj.orgI will cover in depth on our next slide.Podcasting:In development – coming soon!Only if asked:Comcast Cable Communications 51% Cablevision Systems 36%Verizon New Jersey 9%Time Warner Cable 2%Service Electric Cable TV of NJ (Sparta) 1%Service Electric Cable TV of Hunterdon 0.5%US Cable 0.1%Hometown Online 0.1%
  7. One of our listening options is our Internet streaming service available at www.audiovision-nj.orgThis is nationwide since no equipment is required. The customer registers online and we have a system set up with NLS to verify if the customer is registered with another state.Once your library becomes a deposit collection, you will be able to apply for a streaming account for your library. The primary advantage of streaming is that it provides access to individual programs on-demand instead of a live screen. This provides 7 days worth of programming. A customer can select a specific program and listen to it any time of the day or night. Although our cable TV listening option is available to anyone, the streaming service is password protected for the copyright protection of the publisher since a larger amount of material which conceivably could be copied is available. We have over 21,000 visits annually to our streaming site and it is growing every year – with your help, we hope to make it even more popular.
  8. Just be aware – The streaming site uses Windows Media Player to play the files. Your kiosk will already be set up with this. Many computers already have this loaded. In general, advise your customer to log in at home without loading. If it is needed, a dialog box will pop up and prompt the customer through the download. We provide the download link on our website as a convenience.
  9. When you go to the How to Register link, it will step you through how to register. This is a one-time process – after you get a user name and password, you will simply go to Registered Streaming Service Users Click Here on the main Audiovision web site whenever you want to use the site.Although this is intended for New Jerseyans, since there is no equipment involved, we made it open to the United States. We verify whether a New Jerseyan is a TBBC member before giving them a user name and password. For out of state residents, we have an authentication process set up with National Library Services. The applicant simply fills out the form above and hits submit to apply.Institutions as well as individuals can have accounts. When your library becomes a deposit collection, you can apply for a streaming account. If the contact librarian every leaves the library, just give us the new information to update our records.Normally we ask each member to go online and register so they can be sure that their adaptive software works with our site. For deposit accounts, if you prefer, we can set up your account off-line when you register if you provide us contact information and e-mail, then send your contact information.Since under FCC regulations we are permitted to broadcast on open channels as long as our intention is to reach the blind, as a deposit collection you can open your streaming account each day and leave open for your customers to use. You can also assist your eligible customers to register individually at your kiosk, then use their individual account at home. We say to allow up to 2 weeks to get your password, but typically it just takes one or 2 working days. Please call us if you or one of your customers experiences delays.
  10. Once you have a user name and password, go to www.audiovision-nj.orgClick on Registered Streaming Service Users Click HereEnter your credentials, hit okay and you’re in to the password protected siteYou may want to encourage customers who aren’t regular computer users to set this screen as a favorite so they can get in easily
  11. Once you enter the streaming site, you can choose between the following options:Local NewspapersNational NewspapersTV ScheduleCommentary & AdviceWeekly NJ Grocery Ads24 Hour Live Audiovision BroadcastFrom any submenu, use your browser's Back button or command to return to the previous menu. Keyboard shortcuts are available to help you move quickly from page to page. The keyboard shortcuts are designed for people with visual impairments and are accessible using the JAWS screen reader.
  12. This screen gives access to local newspapers:Newark Star LedgerAsbury Park PressPhiladelphia InquirerTrenton TimesCamden Courier PostBergen RecordHome News TribuneThe listener selects the desired paper. Once you click on the individual paper, a menu comes up allowing you to select the day you want to hear: Monday through Friday.Be aware that when you click on a file, there will be a roughly a minute of silence while buffering occurs.
  13. Two of our most popular newspapers are the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, with coverage from Monday – Friday. Both of these are hour-long excerpts that we obtain from other radio reading services for the blind.
  14. One of our most popular programs is our NJ grocery ads. This gives people with visual impairments, many of whom are on fixed incomes, access to information that helps them save money. We were approached by Newsline a number of years ago and they now offer our ads as an option. The grocery stores we feature are regional, so the ads are relevant across a large area. We carry Acme, Pathmark, ShopRite, and Superfresh.Acme for example covers 35 states. This has been a popular feature on Newsline also.We get calls from visually impaired people in other states – but when they ask for Piggly Wiggly we have to say no!
  15. And let’s not forget why we are providing our Audiovision service – our listeners! They depend on us for equal access to information and for adding value to their daily life by letting them keep current with their communities. You can help us reach these people by publicizing your kiosk and showing eligible customers how to use it. I’m going to leave you with a story. One day a phone call was transferred to me. It was a gentleman who used our book service but had never heard of Audiovision. I explained to him how it worked, found out he had a computer, and suggested that he sign up for Audiovision to listen to his local paper. He told me that he didn’t need it because his wife read to him an hour every day from their newspaper. I said – “put your wife on the phone.” Half an hour later I got the electronic notification that he had subscribed to our streaming service. You can help us change lives – not just our mutual customers, but their caregivers can benefit from our services.
  16. Remember when you are back at your library – we are just a phone call away if you have questions. Call our 800 number and ask for Audiovision.
