Outrigger Hotels and Resorts struggled with managing changes to their JD Edwards EnterpriseOne system following an upgrade. They initially used a managed services provider but faced limitations including restricted development times and lack of control over the change management process. Outrigger implemented AutoDeploy Envoy which automated package builds and deployments, allowing them to establish a standardized in-house process. This reduced development cycles from 8x previously and eliminated downtime between environments, improving resource utilization and alignment between IT and the business.
Quality Index: A Composite Metric for the Voice of TestingTechWell
It is quite possible that you are spending a considerable amount of your time as a QA manager making sense of the multitude of metrics reported by your teams, connecting the facts, understanding the underlying reality, and articulating it to your peers and leadership. Still, others in the organization may not interpret the message correctly, rendering most of your efforts futile. Nirav Patel and Sutharson Veeravalli share insights to help you resolve this challenge through a composite measure called Quality Index. By aligning metrics to business outcomes and using Quality Index as a tool of articulation, disparate interpretation of data can be eliminated and a cohesive message delivered to stakeholders. Learn how QA can acquire a voice across the senior forums by articulating succinct, contextual, and actionable information to speed up executive decisions in the course of programs and projects.
The world of IT is shifting rapidly towards DevOps with analysts predicting the majority of companies will adopt DevOps practices in the next few years. In fact, in a recent study on DevOps by International Data Corp. (IDC), they believe that DevOps will be adopted (in either practice or discipline) by 80% of Global 1000 organizations by 2019!
Forming a DevOps team seems like a natural step, but the idea of creating a dedicated DevOps team has ignited anger in the community. Why? What's the concern? Is a DevOps team evil? Completely necessary? A necessary Evil?
Join IBM UrbanCode's Eric Minick to learn the pitfalls of creating bad DevOps teams, and successful approaches of good ones. Along the way, we’ll explore other heresies such as using tools to change culture.

Performance Testing in the Agile LifecycleLee Barnes
Traditional large scale end-of-cycle performance tests served enterprises well in the waterfall era. However, as organizations transition to agile development models, many find their tried and true approach to performance testing—and their performance testing resources—becoming somewhat irrelevant. The strict requirements and lengthy durations just don’t fit in the context of an agile cycle. Additionally, investigating system performance at the end of the development effort misses out on the early stage feedback offered by an agile approach. And it’s more important than ever that today’s agile-built systems perform. So how can agile organizations ensure optimum performance of their business critical systems? Lee Barnes discusses why agile teams need to change their thinking about performance from a narrow focus on testing to a broader focus on analysis—from a people, process and technology perspective. Take back techniques for shifting your performance testing/analysis earlier in the development cycle and extracting performance data that is immediately actionable.

Agile is an approach/methodology of developing and delivering software. However, unfortunately quite a few times it ends up being a set of rituals and ceremonies. Following a set of rituals without understanding the principles behind could cause teams to not benefit from agile fully. In this talk Krishna Kumar will present some testing practices that various agile teams employ. Some of these practices are anti-patterns (has the exact opposite effect of what is expected), while others become an anti-pattern sooner or later if not tweaked according to the changing situations.
Krishna Kumar about the aspects like - Whose responsibility is Quality ? Measuring agile testers success? Balance between automation and exploratory testing etc. Along with each of the anti-pattern, Krishna Kumar about solutions to fix these anti-patterns.

How to Select High Impact Use Cases to Drive a Successful Network Automation ...Itential
As organizations engage on their initiatives to deliver network automation at scale, the prioritization of use cases becomes an essential component to maximize and sustain delivery of benefits to the business. Automating large use cases can have a huge impact, but the time and cost to automate those cases means that benefits will take time to manifest. “Low hanging fruit” use cases can show quick success, but the benefits on their own may be modest. This raises a critical question – How do organizations select the network automation uses cases that provide the most impact?
In Itential’s experience working with hundreds of service providers and enterprises across the world to automate their networks, their team of automation experts has gained first-hand experience in the evaluation, implementation, and execution of thousands of network automation use cases.
Explore what goes into successful use case selection such as:
• The process you should take when selecting the use cases that will drive the most impact to your business.
• The most popular use cases organizations like yours are starting with.
• How to weigh the benefits of tackling low-hanging fruit vs. making big bets.

Managing User Experience During Cloud MigrationseG Innovations
Competition in the digital services world is about managing the customer experience. The cloud is an operating model, and migrating workloads to the cloud involves much more than ‘lift & shift’. In fact, the heavy lifting of cloud migrations may be much more about people than technologies.
Managing customer expectations requires that the user experience be at least as good—if not better—after a cloud migration than it was before the migration took place. Customers really don’t care about the ‘cloud’ per se, they care about the outcomes that cloud-based services can provide.
Learn how you can manage customer expectations and leverage services-oriented monitoring as a program of work within a cloud migration.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
Exploring Innovations in Data Repository Solutions - Insights from the U.S. G...Globus
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has made substantial investments in meeting evolving scientific, technical, and policy driven demands on storing, managing, and delivering data. As these demands continue to grow in complexity and scale, the USGS must continue to explore innovative solutions to improve its management, curation, sharing, delivering, and preservation approaches for large-scale research data. Supporting these needs, the USGS has partnered with the University of Chicago-Globus to research and develop advanced repository components and workflows leveraging its current investment in Globus. The primary outcome of this partnership includes the development of a prototype enterprise repository, driven by USGS Data Release requirements, through exploration and implementation of the entire suite of the Globus platform offerings, including Globus Flow, Globus Auth, Globus Transfer, and Globus Search. This presentation will provide insights into this research partnership, introduce the unique requirements and challenges being addressed and provide relevant project progress.
Developing Distributed High-performance Computing Capabilities of an Open Sci...Globus
COVID-19 had an unprecedented impact on scientific collaboration. The pandemic and its broad response from the scientific community has forged new relationships among public health practitioners, mathematical modelers, and scientific computing specialists, while revealing critical gaps in exploiting advanced computing systems to support urgent decision making. Informed by our team’s work in applying high-performance computing in support of public health decision makers during the COVID-19 pandemic, we present how Globus technologies are enabling the development of an open science platform for robust epidemic analysis, with the goal of collaborative, secure, distributed, on-demand, and fast time-to-solution analyses to support public health.
Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

About
Outrigger Hotels and Resorts is part of the Hawaii-based Outrigger
Enterprises Group. Outrigger is one of the fastest growing, privately-held
hospitality companies in the Asia Pacific, Oceania and Indian Ocean
regions. The company operates resorts in eight nations, and the United
States.
The Challenge
Following a challenging upgrade from World to EnterpriseOne, Outrigger
teams struggled with the inherent differences between the two platforms.
Initially underestimating the demand requirements for CNC resources,
Outrigger quickly assimilated to the challenges of recruiting and retaining an
in- house team. Further exacerbating the challenge, Outrigger often
struggled with relocating talent from the mainland to corporate
headquarters in Oahu. Given the available options, Outrigger came to the
conclusion that partnering with a managed services provider was their best
option.
Outrigger discovered a new set of challenges with managed services. Even
though they were stabilized from their upgrade, the business still required
additional changes to the software, such as reports, interfaces,
configurations, and enhancements. Outrigger encountered service level
agreement restrictions for ad hoc builds outside of predefined times,
conflicting schedules based on the demands of other managed service clients,
as well as varying global holidays from their managed service provider. Due to
the limitations of their managed service provider, it became increasingly
challenging to stay ahead of the steady stream of new requirements from
Outrigger business owners. An unanticipated consequence of the managed
services relationship was the loss of insight into their overall change
management process. Outrigger was no longer hands-on and in control of
system administration, package management and their software
development lifecycle.

As Outrigger starting planning for a global implementation, they began
to re-evaluate their managed service contract. Given the global scale of
the remote locations and available infrastructure, Outrigger adopted a
model of separate instances of JD Edwards for each location. Knowing
the challenges they already had with their managed services provider,
they knew additional challenges would be present in terms of syncing
builds across all instances. They also knew they would again require
outside consulting resources and wanted to be in a better position to
manage third-party involvement with system changes.
The Solution
Following a one day installation of AutoDeploy’s Envoy product, Outrigger
realized immediate value to their business by performing their build and deploys
with either a daily scheduled series of package builds, or with ad hoc builds.
Code changes were effectively delivered for unit testing in development, and
for user acceptance testing by business analysts.
With Envoy, Outrigger was able to quickly establish a scheduled build cycle as well
as immediately respond to any requests for ad hoc builds. Regardless of the level
of experience of the user or the related projects in the package, IT now uses
either a zero click scheduled process or a single click ad hoc process. With the
establishment of a standardized, repeatable process for moving changes into the
system, IT and the business were in a position to use technology as a tool to
enhance overall value.
Outrigger saw an immediate reduction in cycle times with Envoy. With little to no
downtime between moving system changes into different environments, unit
testing and functional testing were able to be performed in an expedited manner,
resulting in less idle time for expensive third party resources. Internal resources
also benefitted as the time reduction meant changes were moved into the
production environment in an expedited manner.
"AutoDeploy has been a great
partnership for Outrigger.
Before we were using
AutoDeploy Envoy, the
technical functions of
EnterpriseOne, specifically
package management, was
challenging for our IT
organization. With Envoy we
have been able to reduce
development time, increase
utilization of our in house and
3rd party resources, be more
agile in delivery of value add
projects to the business, and
facilitate a strong relationship
between IT and our business
users. AutoDeploy is critical to
our organizational success with
EnterpriseOne now, and in the
future. The value to our
business has been
tremendous."

Under a managed service provider, Outrigger had two budget line
items - one related to managed services and one related to hourly
overage for a preset amount. As Outrigger tried to work within the
defined limits of the managed services contract, they still found
themselves paying for additional hours related to re-work and wait
times for package management. By utilizing Envoy, Outrigger
eliminated the need for a managed service provider. They consolidated
both line items into a single line item that was significantly lower than
the original amount for managed services alone. Not only were they
able to reduce overall spending but they were able to establish a fixed
number for costs related to system maintenance.
The ability to have a reliable process in place for package management
across multiple instances greatly reduced the complexity of the global
rollout. Envoy allowed Outrigger to isolate any issues related to moving
system changes into any environment as they knew Envoy only allowed
deployment of error-free builds. By having a process already in place,
Outrigger was able to enforce standards across the enterprise.
As Outrigger continues to move forward with EnterpriseOne, they are
self-sufficient, no longer reliant on third party vendors for daily system
maintenance. They now have a standardized, repeatable process for
system administration, software development lifecycle, and package
management in-house. Business and IT are aligned and are focused on
delivering higher-level value with improved processes and controls.
Outrigger is now in a position to use technology as a tool to further
deliver business value.
