Breguet watchmakers

taking it to new heights

The byword of luxury and

which provides an instant

by the Maestro of Watches
- Abraham-Louis Breguet in
1795 and was granted a
patent for it by the Ministry
of Interior France in 1801.
The device Tourbillon was
developed by him to keep
his precise watches even
more precise. The biggest
problem then and now
is the time consuming
process of manufacturing
Tourbillon even in its most
conventional version.
This remarkable feat at
a time when tools were
primitive speaks volumes
about the competence
of the watchmaking skill
and the production of a
Tourbillon watch was a
certificate of competence.

return after nearly two
centuries. The tourbillon is
a device to eliminate the
effects of gravity on the
rate of a watch. A watch
balance will go fast or slow
depending on the position
of the watch. Breguet got
around the problem by
rotating the entire balance
and escapement around
their common axis once
a minute. This constant
rotation averages out
all the positional errors.
Though ahead of its time
then, it is now recognised
as a horological marvel. It
retains its fascination by
the complexity of its action

the concept. For many, the
tourbillon embodies the

As an ode to this

a line of beauties. Saluting

hey say ‘home is where the heart
is’. And one of the best ways to do
away with your blues, and bring
a little cheer into your life is to
give your surroundings a fancy facelift. However,
redecoration does not necessarily translate into
weeks of construction, milling workers, dusty
walls and hours of stress. It can be easy, quick
and hassle-free and yet give you the most
spectacular results. All you need is to acquaint
yourself with the world of soft interiors.
Bedroom Basics
If the purpose of revamping your home is to get
rid of the feeling of stagnation or boredom that
you might feel with the existing interiors, it’s
best to start from your bedroom. This space is
your personal haven, a place you retreat to for
relaxation, peace and the much-appreciated
‘own time’. Also, since it is the most used space
in your home, any investment in redecorating
will truly be worth your buck. Going with the
concept of ‘soft interiors’, it’s best not to worry
too much about replacing furniture or going in
for any new construction. “A burst of colour can
give your room a completely different feel. It has
been scientifically proven that colours impact
your mood – for example blue induces calm
while pink brings about positive energy. And if
painting seems too much of a hassle, an easy
and effective option is that of wall papers,” says
Nakul Khandelwal, creative director, Floors and
Furnishings. One can opt for a single-toned paper
to give the effect of paint or go experimental with
designs and textures. Even a single wall with
a dramatic wall paper in graphic print or loud
colour can change the look of your room. The
greatest advantages of using wall papers are
that they take less than half a day to put up,
don’t involve any messy work and come in all
kinds of budgets.
To bring out the new colours in your bedroom,
an effective idea is to supplement it with fresh
furnishings. Says Sajid Dehlvi, CEO, Whites of
London, a premium brand offering bed linen,
“You can incorporate the latest trends into your
bedroom with minimal cost by changing your
curtains, cushions and rugs.” If your room is in
neutral colours, opt for bright, contrasting shades
for curtains. The colour palette for the season
includes sapphire blue, bitter chocolate, teal,
ochre and dusty heather. Experiment with these
shades, throw in some new cushions and a rug
and see your bedroom take a whole new
shape.

the art of making a perfect Tea
The Tea Party was the culmination
of a resistance movement through-
out British America against the Tea
Act, which had been passed by the
British Parliament in 1773. Colonists
objected to the Tea Act for a variety
of reasons, especially because they
believed that it violated their right to
be taxed only by their own elected
representatives. Protesters had suc-
cessfully prevented the unloading of
taxed tea in three other colonies, but
in Boston, embattled Royal Governor
Thomas Hutchinson refused to allow
the tea to be returned to Britain. He
apparently did not expect that the
protestors would choose to destroy
the tea rather than concede the au-
thority of a legislature in which they
were not directly represented.
White tea
White tea is the most delicate and probably the most
powerful of all the types of tea. It brews a very airy aroma
and somewhat fruity taste that any hot beverage drinker
can enjoy. This tea also offers more powerful antioxidant
properties than its older brothers. I say “older” because
this tea is in fact young, that is, the leaves are picked
before they fully open and are covered with tiny fuzzy
whitish hairs which earns it its name “white tea”.
Many people around the world enjoy a good
cup of freshly brewed tea (in fact, tea has
been ranked as the second highest consumed
beverage) and there are many different types
of tea for them to enjoy. We could name types of
teas such as White Tea, Black Tea, Oolong Tea,
and Ceylon tea and that’s not even scratching
the surface. There are in fact probably as many
different types and flavors of tea as there are
wines. Like wine, tea also differs in taste
depending on the soil and environment it is
grown in.
Ginger tea
White tea is the most delicate and probably
the most powerful of all the types of tea.
It brews a very airy aroma and somewhat

Fast Facts
Boston Tea Party
Green tea
Green tea is another well-known type and also offers great health benefits too. Grown and highly consumed
in both China and Japan, this tea branches off into literally hundreds of varieties. I’ve only tried the more
popular types of tea in the green family, and there are still so many for me to sample! Although green tea
may seem a bit grassy in the beginning, it is a tea that one can really enjoy once they get past the first few
cups. Don’t worry, the palate opens up to it!
What is Tea?
Tea is basically the dried and
processed leaves of only one species
of plant called camellia sinensis.
Interestingly enough, herbal teas or
herbal infusions are not really teas, but
simply dried leaves and/or flowers from
various other plants and herbs.
Do You Know?
tea has been ranked as the
second highest consumed
beverage
The Boston Tea Party was a direct
action by colonists in Boston,
a town in the British colony of
Massachusetts, against the British
government and the monopolistic
East India Company that controlled
all the tea coming into the colo-
nies. On December 16, 1773, after
officials in Boston refused to return
three shiploads of taxed tea to Brit-
ain, a group of colonists boarded
the ships and destroyed the tea by
throwing it into Boston Harbor.The
incident remains an iconic event of
American history, and other politi-
cal protests often refer to it.
Oolong tea
which is also called wu long tea is one of those types of tea that is in between green and black. A sweet,
floral, woody brew that consists of larger leaves. This tea has also proven in studies that it can help folks shed
pounds, and even decrease the progress of wrinkles and aging of the skin.
Black tea
Black tea which is the most commonly consumed tea in the world is the most processed
of the four types. Mostly brewed by tea bag in America, and traditionally served in the
United Kingdom as “afternoon tea”, this type of tea is every tea drinker’s daily cup.
Enjoyed with milk, sugar, honey, or lemon, it has a rich, earthy, and malty taste. However if
one really wants to do it justice...brew it by the whole leaf!

When it was introduced in 2007, the Marine
Tourbillon was the first watch to have a calibre with
a silicon escapement. The balance-spring, balance-
wheel and lever all used this material. The tourbillon
carriage was made of titanium. The reason for using
these ultra-innovative materials was because they
made it possible to obtain a tourbillon that was light,
and therefore highly shock resistant; non-magnetic;
and easier to regulate since it did not require
lubrication. The combination of this prestigious
complication, invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet,
with a chronograph function, marked the birth of an
exceptional watch. Launched as an 18-carat red-gold
version in 2007, it is now being introduced with a 950
platinum case. The matching dial and hands are also
of this material, the use of whichremains anexception
in watchmaking due to the price. Here, the original
hands have been replaced by blued-steel Breguet
hands. The dial is still solid gold, entirely covered with
hand engraving done on a rose engine in the finest
Breguet tradition. Only the finish has been changed,
to silvered platinum.

Nokia
Lumia 800
I
It was quite surprising to see that Nokia missed on including
any audio enhancements for the 800 and that is a major
downer. Audio quality was consistent with any other high-end
smartphone, but it could have surely been better with a few
options to personalize the output. We did find the decibel level
a tad low, especially in crowded areas. The speaker phone was
also a little too low for our comfort level. The built-in FM radio
was just fine and even managed to pick up signals quite well on a
daily commute through the city. Nokia has pre-installed TuneIn for
Internet radio options as well.
Once again, we were plagued with the Zune menace, meaning
we had to make sure that our videos were first compatible with
the software, before it could take its own sweet time transferring
to the handset. Once on the handset, the picture quality, Nokia’s
Clear Black Display enriched the colors. 16Gigs of internal storage
space is also quite a bit to keep media lovers fairly satisfied, even
if they can’t extend it any further. Connectivity
you don’t see here, you could easily find on the market
place. Microsoft Office with SkyDrive and Office 365
support is also really handy.
The Bottom Line
Nokia has priced the Lumia 800 at Rs. 29,990 (MRP), which
does make it one of the more expensive WP7 handsets on
the market today. This could be a problem for the company
as cheaper options like the HTC Radar could pose as a
competitor. Granted we’re talking about a company that
was once held in extremely high regard in this field, but if
Nokia is looking to make a serious comeback, the Lumia
800, as well-built and powerful a device as it is, is just too
damn pricey. The last thing we need right now is another
“premium” type product with limited functionality; I think
we’ve gone way past that curve.
Battery
A 1450mAh battery sits under the Polycarbonate shell
and is quite capable of providing users with a fairly
decent battery life. In our stand alone video test, with all
connectivity turned off, the Lumia 800 ran for 6 hours and
35 minutes before shutting down. In our tech2 Loop Test,
we ran the handset for 8 hours and 20 minutes non-stop.
Usage, with EDGE running constantly, included 2 hours of
video, 2 hours of audio, 2 hours of audio streaming, 2
hours and 20 minutes of calls. On 3G though, don’t expect
too much as we were barely able to use it for a full day
before it required a charge.
Camera
An 8 megapixel shooter is strapped onboard the rear of the
Lumia 800 with Dual LEDs comprising of the flash. Settings
include scene modes, white balance, ISO settings, a few
effects and a Macro mode. Sadly there’s no 1080p HD
video recording support, which is another drawback. The
maximum resolution is 720p HD for video. Image quality
was not what we expected from a Nokia device. Image focus
was a problem in most areas when talking about quality in
slightly low lit outdoor conditions. Video recording, in stark
contrast was quite good with pretty decent audio levels.
The connectivity domain, the Lumia 800 comes across as
a very capable smartphone. Packing 3G Wi-Fi capabilities
under its belt, you’re good to go wherever you are. What is
lacking though is the facility to create a hotspot, something
that even the guys at Apple made sure of including with their
latest devices. While we’re quite fond of the IE browser on
WP7, the lack of Flash and Silverlight support was a bit of a
setback. Speed-wise, the browser functions very well. Setting
up accounts of any kind is a breeze, just sign-in and let the
device do the rest from syncing with People’s Hub for your
contacts to e-mail and calendar dates. Social networking,
chatting, posting messages is a real easy task on the 800.
The Lumia 800 also includes Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps and
Bing Maps, which we thought was overkill. Nokia Drive is a
real boon for those unfamiliar with cities they’re travelling to
or even living in. The interface is easy to read and getting
locations and details in the area is also simple and quick.
With Bing Maps pre-loaded, Nokia Maps seems a bit redundant, but
it’s there, nonetheless. Times Point is another pre-loaded application
that gives you all kinds of information on what’s going on in your
geographic location. There’s also the Weather Channel and Nokia’s
App Highlights that showcases a list of Lumia 800 friendly apps,
specifically chosen for the device. You can shake the handset to get
new apps displayed.
Misc. Features
Basic mobile functionality from the Calendar for appointments,
reminders etc, Alarm clock and a Calculator are also onboard. What

O
disha–known as the soul of Incredible
India, is a land of serene, scenic and
sublime beauty. It has a long and
cherished history, hospitable people, bountiful
natural and cultural heritage, a wide range of
handicrafts and colourful festivals. The state
is abuzz with cultural activities from the month
of October to March every year with a string of
festivals and fairs that exude the essence of Oriya
culture. The most popular of these festivals is the
Konark Dance Festival, held from December 1 to
5 every year.
An annual fête of Indian classical dance and
music, the Konark Dance Festival is one of the
biggest dance festivals in the country, bringing
champions of different classical and traditional
dance forms together to display their skill and
mastery over age-old dance forms such as the
classic Bharatnatyam, the graceful Odissi, the
expressive Mohiniattam and the statuesque
Kathak dance styles, amongst others. Since 1989,
the Konark Dance Festival has been drawing
tourists, dance and music lovers alike to the
sandy shores of Konark every year.
As many as 10 highly-acclaimed artists have
confirmed participation at this year’s festival.
The five-day festival will showcase performances
in Odissi, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Bharatnatyam,
Sattriya and Mohiniattam.
A number of artists from different parts of
the country such as Ahmedabad, Bengaluru,
Guwahati and New Delhi will be performing at the
festival this year.
Thisyear’slistofperformersincludesstalwarts
of classical dance such as Mallika Sarabhai, Dr
Madhavi Mudgal, Dr (s) Raja Radha Reddy, Meera
Das, Dr Malabika Mitra etc. Mallika Sarabhai, one
of India’s leading choreographers and dancers, is
in constant demand as a soloist and with her own
dancecompany,Darpana,creatingandperforming
both classical and contemporary works. Mallika
has created numerous stage productions which
have raised awareness, highlighted crucial issues
and advocated change, and several of those
productions have been staged internationally as
well as throughout India.
Dr Madhavi Mudgal, one of the leading
classical dancers of India and a highly acclaimed
exponent of Odissi, was a prime disciple of
legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. She is
credited with bringing a greatly refined sensibility
to her art form. She has been received repeated
recognition in all major cities and festivals for her
solo and group performances.
World renowned dancing couple, Dr (s)
Raja and Radha Reddy and their group Natya
Tarangini has given a new dimension to the age-
old art of Kuchipudi dance without sacrificing the
traditional poetry or dramatic sensibility. Through
their togetherness and perfect unison Dr(s) Raja

A jugalbandi of painting and music will also
be held every day during the period of the dance
festival.
Coinciding with the Konark Dance Festival, the
Odisha Tourism Department will also be hosting
the sequel of the International Sand Art Festival.
The Sand Art Festival of Odisha is the largest in
the country. Like the previous year, this year too a
large number of artists from all around the world
will gather on the Chandrabhaga beach for the
largest exhibition of their art in India.
The art of Odisha is found at its supreme
expression in the stone sculptures of the state,
the wood work, ivory knick- knacks, silver filigree
items, sand art and patachitra. Of these, sand
art has been a major factor in drawing tourists
to the state. The International Sand Art festival,
the largest sand art competition in the country,
was an innovative step taken by the state
tourism department to promote tourism in the
country. Sand art has been practiced since time
immemorial in the state. It is reported that one of
the oldest creations was a sand chariot made by a
devotee poet Balaram Das in 14th century A.D. The
tradition has now been revived by contemporary
sand artists.
Odisha Tourism organised the first-ever
International Sand Art Festival in India from 1st
to 5th December 2011 at the Chandrabhaga
Beach alongwith the famous Konark Dance
Festival. The objective of the International Sand
Art Festival is to provide a platform for national
and international artists to interact and share
ideas with each other.
Renowned sand artist Sudarshan patnaik
has been selected as the brand ambassador of
the International Sand Art Festival. The five-
day event, with participation from 9 countries,
including Spain, Japan and the USA, apart from
talented artists from within the country is a grand
affair. The pristine shores of Chandrabhaga serve
as a canvas to the creative hands of well known
sand artists from all over the world.
The foreign artists participating in the festival
this year are Benjamin probanza from Mexico;
Etual Ojeda from Spain; JOOheng Tan from
Singapore; Katsuhiko Chaen from Japan; Benoit
Dutherage from France; Elisabeth Kristensen
from Norway; Ulrich from Germany; Damian Van
Der Velden from Netherland, Brian Turnbough
and Russell Lee Croft from the United States of
America.
Vaibhav Chandrakant Katwate and Laxmi
Nauraten Goud from Maharashtra, Ballabha
Mohapatra, Sridhar Das, Ranjan Kumar Ganguli
and Radha Reddy portray the masculine vigour
and lyrical charms of the pairs of hindu mythology
such as Shiva-parvati, Rama-Sita and Krushna –
Radha thus identifying themselves with the twin
concept of purusha and prakriti, the male female
principle in Indian philosophy.
Meera Das, a disciple of the legendary Guru
Kelucharan Mohapatra and Guru Gangadhar
pradhan, is a solo dancer of international repute
and choreographer of impeccable perfection. She
set up her institute, Gunjan Dance Academy, in
1995 which is committed to the classical and
traditional heritage of Odissi. Meera Das is
imparting training and guiding a group of young
dancers in the historic city of Cuttack and with
them set up a highly professional troupe that has
been performing around the globe.
Dr Malabika Mitra is one of the foremost
Kathak exponents of India with outstanding
brilliance. With long years of intensive training
and sheer dedication towards the art form
of Kathak: whether rhythmic compositions or
expressional items. Through the years with her
own creative temperament, she has evolved a
strong individual style combining the technical
brilliance of Jaipur Gharana with the delicate
grace of Lucknow Gharana.
The majestic Sun Temple of Konark serves
as the backdrop to this unique convention. The
Sun Temple, also called the Black pagoda, is an
architectural masterpiece constructed of black
granite and is designed as a chariot drawn by
seven exquisitely carved horses. The 700-year old
structure has been recognized as a World heritage
site and has beautiful carvings that epitomize
medieval Oriya art and craftsmanship.
An Odisha Tourism official said, “Each year
the majestic Sun Temple of Konark serves as
a backdrop to the scintillating Konark Dance
Festival, which is a platform for well known
exponents of different classical dance styles
come together to celebrate the beauty of their
art forms. We have received confirmations from

A Royale Ride to the
Royale
Navalgarh
Our ride into deep interior Haryana &
Rajputana had begun, the so called “ rural
“ people seemed far more relaxed, happy
and content with what they had. Buses,
and occasional Boleros that rule the roads
were surprisingly courteous to us, giving
us way and being considerate about the
dust that they were throwing up on us.
Fields of mustard painted the landscape
yellow till the eye could see, an occasional
patchofonionfarmswaitingtobeharvested
and some stretches of wheat sowed areas,
not to miss an occasional board of some
real estate developer offering worlds most
comfortable homes at cheapest prices!
By noon after a brief off-road ride of 3
kms which seemed never ending, we
reached the “worlds most famous” peda
shop at Chidawa. Large metal kadhais
that seemed to have been made from gun
metal churning out some great Pedas.
What remained a mystery, is why they
made a dent in the peda !
With almost an hour behind schedule,
we decided to test the endurance of the
engines and I signaled my co-rider Vaibhav
for speed to be adjusted and make up for
lost time. With the jingle – Yeh Bullet Meri
Jaan ( This bullet is my life ) that I had
heard as a child and still a fresh in my
mind, Full ahead Captain !
In a flash, as though we were in a Harry
Potter flick, we went back in time. A slow
leisurely camel cart walking as though he
was on auto-pilot, Havelis that hold within
them the history of families and warriors
that dwelled in them – We were passing
Bagar, the colorful town which is known for
its educational institutions and also for
giving India one of her most illustrious and
successful businessmen. It also houses
my favorite non-hotel chain – Piramal
Haveli by Neemrana Hotels. How I wished
that there were two Sundays in a week !
There it was, the first signage that gave
directions for the Roop Niwas Kothi, thanks
to my ability to decipher short forms,
R.N.K.
Meant we are on the right track.
After clearing a few obstacles
(we call them speed breakers)
reached the gates of the
R.N.K.
Welcome to
Navalgarh !
It was indeed a truly Royale
Experience from them time we
entered the Roop Niwas Kothi. The thump
of the bullet was soon to be replaced by the
sound of the hooves. The finest Marwari
horses I ever saw and in numbers larger
than the Presidents Bodyguards ! So if you
are a serious rider, carry your breaches
and riding gear along.
From the seat to the saddle, how
they both behave the same. Start a cold
bullet, and she will miss fire a bit…..
Saddle up a horse, and he will take time
to welcome you!
How I wished, we had two Sundays! The
truly royal experience was over whelming.
A village full of havelies, paintings that
explain and tell stories about the region
and its history.
The journey’s experience was heightened
because we were on bikes from Royal
India Bikes, a travel company which is a
brainchild of Rajiv Singh Yadav, a Logistics
& Shipping specialist with 18 years
experience, an ardent biker and traveller
himself.
The company provides new bikes, best
equipment and travel tips for serious
bikers and their service extends from the
Himalayas to the plains of Rajasthan to
the Nilgiris in the south.B
lasting off from Delhi on a cold
foggy winter morning, we set out
on two of our lead bikes from the
pack, christened IL 78 & Jaguar
(with extra fuel tank), courtesy Royal India
Bikes, a New Delhi and Chandigarh-based
bike rental and travel advisory.
After encountering thick fog, we broke
out into a fine sunny day by the time we
reached Rewari, our first halt to stretch and
thaw ourselves. We stopped at a road side
dhabha, just after exiting NH8. Something
that happened to me many times at home,
happened here too…..there was no milk
for the tea. The owner made a dash to the
back yard, to draw milk from the buffalo,
promising us tea in next five minutes. The
buffalo obliged, and we got milk for our
tea. We rode on, and after a few minutes
realized of a navigation error which was
taking us back towards NH 8 while we were
to get on to NH71B. Thanks to the signage
put up by NHAI. We took our first real break
short of Singhana and had the most non-
fattening egg & aloo parathas with green
chillies on the house ! The chef’s logic was
that green chillies will keep us warm during
the ride.
