Out Of My Mind Sparknotes
Out of my Mind Book Report
In the novel Out of my Mind by Sharon M. Draper, an eleven–year–old girl identified as Melody Brooks has a photographic memory, which is a side
effect of cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a disease where you can't move, write, and most importantly, talk.. Eventually throughout the book Melody
overcomes her fears and matures enough to accept that she is her own person. Melody is a bright girl, who has cerebral palsy, but when she gets a
device that allows her to articulate, she changes the way other people perceive her. Throughout the most important weeks for Melody, she excels and
matures for the most important event yet. She proves herself smart enough when she gets onto the Whiz kids team, but will she be able to help the
team win the finals?
An example of a major theme in the book is family, because Melody's mother and father as well as Mrs.V (Melody's kind/supportive neighbor) are
always supporting Melody with her disorder. When Melody was a baby, they dropped her off at Mrs. V's house so she could babysit. At Mrs.V's house
Mrs.V teaches Melody new words, by putting stickers with words all over her board...show more content...
For example, she's there for Melody when she needs an extra pair of clothes to change into, or when she needs to feed Melody her lunch. She also
helps Melody during classes if she needs to take a test/quiz or needs to do classwork. Towards the end of the book Catherine helps Melody
exceptionally, because before the Whiz Kids quiz Melody drops tomato soup over her white t–shirt, so Catherine cleans it up. And also when she wants
to take the actual quiz her teacher (Mr.D) doesn't think it's a good idea, so he says no. But then Catherine argues saying that everybody should be
given a fair chance, and that those are the school rules. After Catherine argues Mr. D agrees and says yes and Melody comes in first place for the

Deadpool Brings His Swords, Guns, and Hilarious Insults on Amazon Marvel's "Deadpool" makes fans love and hate this anti–hero, as the comic book
character fights, and insults, his way to get his love back after an experiment to make him "super" goes horribly wrong. Ryan Reynolds portrays
Wade Wilson, also known as Deadpool, a mercenary that takes jobs in New York City to get rid of bad guys by requests from clients. He meets an
escort named Vanessa at a local bar, and their one–night stand turns into a long–term relationship. Wade enjoys his relationship with Vanessa for a year,
but soon hits rock bottom when he's diagnosed with terminal cancer. This leads to Wade leaving Vanessa, and falling into a scam that gives him
immortality, but a disfigured body. As he lives with an old, blind woman while he plans to find Ajax, real name Francis, in order to get the
"nonexistent" cure for his disfigurement. Although this film seems dark with gory violence and evil plots, Wade consistently throws wisecracks and
hilarious insults that will grab the viewers in the gut as they laugh. One of his most hilarious wisecrack is when he discovers that Ajax's real name is

However, what this character does is seek revenge on the villain that gave him a power of immortality, but disfigured his body as a result of

has never seen himself as a hero because he lacks the quality of a hero: the ideal, moral, and courageous person that people look up to. Instead, he

The Pact Sparknotes
I would recommend, "The Pact: Three young men make a promise and fulfill a dream" to eleventh grade students for several reasons. First factor,
throughout this whole novel it gives you a wakeup call. For example, life in college is not that easy as you think, they got in to a lot of trouble, and
throughout all that they were given a second chance in life. Second factor, Depicts transition from high school to college. They knew college is different
from high school because of their own experience. They struggled throughout college, they financially couldn't pay their books and other stuff they
need to fro their classes. Then, this novel teaches you life lessons. Throughout this novel you will see how hard they had it and they still chased

Ignatius did not worry about not knowing the French language, as he trusted that God would help him cope with language barriers as he did in the
past. He walked seven–hundred miles to Paris from Salamanca. In Paris, Ignatius realized that he should focus more on education and postpone his
efforts to help the marginalized and people in need. Ignatius realized that in Spain, he devoted too much time to helping others and not enough time
getting educated. At the age of thirty–seven, Ignatius enrolled at the College of Montaigu to study humanities, which included the study of Latin
grammar and literature. Ignatius had been given money by some of his Spanish benefactors so that he would not have to beg for alms. With this money,
he found a room in a boarding house with other Spanish students and turned over the money he was given to another student there for safekeeping.
Unfortunately, the student quickly spent the money and Ignatius had no money to pay for school or support himself. He left the boarding house and
found a room at the Hospital Saint–Jacques, a hospice for pilgrims on their way to the shrine of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. However, the
hospice was far away from Ignatius' school, giving Ignatius far too little time to study and too little time to beg arms. It also caused Ignatius to miss
the morning hours of school due to the hospice's

Summary: In the beginning of the graphic novel, the authors depict the events of Anne's parents, Edith and Otto. The book continues to depict
snapshots of her life including, Anne's beginning years in Frankfurt, her families immigration to Amsterdam, her view of the war. At the conclusion of
the book the audience is exposed to her last years in the Annex where the Frank family was betrayed by an unknown source and reported to the

The Fifth Season Sparknotes
Okay, so this is how this is going to work... The deep book review will be split into different sections, one where I will dump a bunch of information
about the storyline on the reader, another where I will rant about what makes this book deep but not good, and, finally, another about the author. The
footnotes will be my way of interjecting Laszlo–esque commentary on what would normally be a more formal piece of writing without drastically
altering the formality of the review.
Throughout the book, The Fifth Season changes from Syenite to Damaya to, finally, a character referred to as 'you' (as you might expect, all chapters
written from you's perspective are written in second person). As the book moves on, switching from character to character, similarities between
Syenite and Damaya start to appear, until, chapter seventeen, when it is revealed Damaya is just a young Syenite. Towards the end, Syenite is
revealed to be you (your name is Essun). So all along, when you thought you were reading the story of three different...show more content...
The Fifth Season is definitely interesting, however, I sort of enjoyed reading it because of its' complexity, and, as it is part of a series, it has a
sequel. This sequel gives you a glimpse into what is going on with Nassun and helps explain some stuff, namely, what the hell is happening. Well,
Father Earth lost his favorite child, so, in an attempt to appease Father Earth, some of the stone eaters decided they should try and get his favorite
child, the moon back. So, the book ends with Essun getting ready to catch the moon. Pure awesomeness aside, I feel like I liked it better when things
were confusing. The second book, The Obelisk Gate, doesn't contain as many of the storyline scrambling mind–blowing revelations that made the first
one so interesting, so it has to rely mostly on storyline. This means it is a bit more enjoyable to read, but it doesn't contain any of the things that, in my
mind, make The Fifth Season deep book

Ms. Lindstrom Sparknotes and Cliffnotes both assist a reader and can help students interpret literature at a more in depth level, and help improve
understanding the literary elements, character developments, and plot development that a author uses to help create the story. Both sites provide
similar information, ranging from overall plot summaries and character analysis, but Sparknotes goes more into the literary aspect of the book, while
cliffnotes focuses more on the character and his motives. In analyzing Jay Gatsby, Cliffnotes focuses much more on Gatsby himself and his underlying
motives to his character, like "In assessing Gatsby, one must examine his blind pursuit of Daisy." (Cliffnotes).

Synthetic, pretend, mock, fake, these are all synonyms to the word virtual. "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline shows the positives and negatives to
living entirely in a virtual world. Although there are favorable aspects to developing and nurturing online friendships or even relationships there are
fallible aspects as well that seem to outnumber what may appear harmless at first. In this book we are shown 3 different sets of online relationships,
that of best friends, a couple and "brothers". Aech and Wade are the first real relationship shown in this book and they model best friends. These two
have been best friends for the past 4 years and have spent countless hours together playing video games, watching movies and just talking. Because

People want to be surrounded by other people. Nobody wants to be worthless. These two factors are what drive people to sacrifice themselves in
order to belong. They sacrifice who they are because they need, not want, validation in their lives: a sense of belonging. Humans are social
animals. They evolved to be social after discovering that the burden of work could be offset by dividing it with other people, otherwise known as
working together. So if a person is in a group, it is in their best interest to stay in that group. Not everyone likes each other though, so to avoid being
kicked out, one's next best interest is to keep good relations. The simplest way to do this is to follow basic social rules: etiquette. Since the rules are

of his ability and sanity: all for what? Neiman wants to prove not to his family, but to everyone that he belongs on the drum kit. He is willing to

Robert Herrick Sparknotes
"The Vine", are all pieces of Robert Herrick's intriguing work, but nonetheless, if his writings are analyzed more carefully than just the entertainment
that emits on the surface, could he truly be a deranged individual?
For my writing, I will be picking apart the psyche of Robert Herrick from two different standpoints. I will be using an old Freudian method, and a
modern psychoanalysis of Robert Herrick for added structure, realism, and integrity. Freudian methodology was introduced in roughly the 1890's
(Cooper–White, P. (2015)) and was used religiously during its time. It was developed by a psychologist namedSigmund Freud who focused on a lot of
unconscious thought processes and developmental methodologies. Freud liked to focus his work...show more content...
Robert Herrick speaks about this "vine" as it is his male sexual appendage that wraps and intertwines itself within Lucia, his lover in this poem, so
she may not escape his grasp. The speaker of Robert Herrick's writing describes that he is so in love with this subject, Lucia, and his desire to have
her for his own because he needs structure for himself. The tone throughout this whole poem is very confused and chaotic because the speaker
seems as if he is jumping between the need of love from Lucia its joyous feelings, or for the benefit of his own sanity so he will not remain isolated
and alone. From a Freudian perspective of psychoanalysis, I would look into Robert Herrick having a deeply repressed love and misconnection with
his mother, such as an Oedipus complex, and this is why he is so needing of the love from Lucia. The Oedipus complex resides within the relation of a
blood–family; a mother, a father, and a son (Son– Oedipus complex; daughter– Electra complex). The Oedipus complex revolves around the envious
feelings towards the father, from the son, because of the bond that the father has to the mother. Because there is a lack of a loving bond between the
mother and the son, the son unconsciously has the Oedipus complex, also known as "penis envy". In Robert Herrick's, "The Vine", the lover of the
speaker in the poem is named Lucia. This name would be a large part of his psychoanalytic research. The etymology of the name "Lucia" takes the
Latin meaning of "Graceful light". If the name is changed just slightly, to something with an extremely similar etymology, is

The behavior of Charles regarding his misplaced cellphone is one which I can empathize with. When we use certain types of technologies, we
become used to it and become part of our daily lives, gadgets such as smartphones and tablets become an extension of our bodies. In a way they are
limbs of our bodies and a loss of such objects can cause us much discomfort before we get used to it and adapt to the new situation. The character of
Charles is relatable due to the fact that the choices that he faces and world that he lives in is similar to our own where we face similar choices as
an individual and as a society on issues that are relevant to us today. In our world people are already using developments in technology in order to
influence outcomes of events in fields such as sports. The use of performance enhancing drugs to improve body function, the use of clothing that
reduces air friction in order to break records are issues in sports that are relevant in today's world. The main question that comes to mind is regarding
the "fairness" or "unfairness" of the issue and the varying degree of assistance that can be considered fair or unfair. In case of using prosthetics, is it
enough just being able to walk, or should the loss of limbs and the subsequent use of prosthetics lead to a more enhanced and improved human
experience as Charles does in the

We Are Seven Sparknotes
What can a child know about death? Death and other major life events may be perceived as something catastrophic, while others view them as
opportunities. William Wordsworth, a pioneer of English Romanticism, uses poetry as a means of emotional expression. This genre serves as a homage
to individualism, commonly encountered events in nature and emotions ranging from fear to those faced handling the rapid changes in the world.
Growing up in rural England during the Industrial Revolution, one is provided with a serene environment to propagate the views of this new artistic
movement. Written in late 18th century as part of Lyrical Ballads, a poetry collection, William Wordsworthcomposes the poem, "We Are Seven" to

Throughout his life, the importance of church, its precepts and the significance of family was cultivated within him. During the 1700's, the church

how it pertains to rural life. In Wordsworth's poem, these values are recognized as the little girl states, "Then did the little Maid reply, Seven boys and
girls are we; Two of us in the church–yard lie, Beneath the church–yard tree" (Wordsworth pg. 128). She again does not want to accept the fact that
they are dead but perhaps can find a new way to salvation through the church. Being buried in the church yard instills more importance and prestige
to the church itself rather than just for the comfort it provides. Fortunately, this church is easily accessible and centrally located to all of the local
society. The little girl being very enmeshed with the church shows that she wants to feel closer to God and possibly connect with her deceased
siblings. The church may also provide her with a path to the afterworld with a means of remembering her sibling's legacies. Wordsworth, being
religious, uses the church and its importance in rural life to get his points across to his audience. Additionally, he uses the church yard as a place
accepting of all and where the kids can play, feel safe and comfortable. The locale of this poem is integral not only to Wordsworth but also to the
family of seven he writes about in his

beyond our expectations?" I take this as if that basic skills building up can create or make an imagination grow to its full potential. The better you get at
something and the more it is practiced the better you become at it. With building stronger skills comes a stronger imagination and put those skills to the

good writer out of a decent writer is all possible as long as the writer practices fundamentals and a huge fundamental is being able to be descriptive.
Staring an essay you must be able to use words that can grab the readers attention and make them want to read more. Using strong adjectives as in

H.P. Lovecraft's 'Dagon': Summary and Analysis
Dagon is a short story written by the American horror and fantasy writer H.P. Lovecraft in 1917. The story began with an unknown narrator telling the
story of his abduction by the German sea–raiders. Later on, the protagonist continues the story of his successful escape in a small boat from these
sea–raiders. After being lost for days in the sea, the man became haunted by his dreams, nightmares, and delusions. He told the story of how he was
asleep and unexpectedly found himself in the middle of a black mire in the middle of the ocean after his boat had drifted. He went into the mire in an
attempt to find dry land, a ship, or someone who can help him. He found a white monolithic statue with aquatic hieroglyphics on it and a giant creature
looks like a giant fish worshiping it. He then starts his hallucination where he says that he ran back to his boat singing and laughing. Afterwards, he
woke up in San Francisco hospital and knew that a ship saved him. Due to his hallucinations and nightmares, he became a morphine addict and he
wrote this story as his suicide letter.
Dagon is written in a very distinctive way that identifies Lovecraft's writing style. It is chaotic and sounds like the blabbering of a madman. The
beginning of Dagon was definitely an attention getter, yet what followed later was incongruous. The story is dark, ornate, complicated, and Lovecraft
description is reminiscent. It is also filled with pathos, mostly fear. It is chaotic with a lot of emotional exaggeration in it. The sense of horror was
intense along with agonizing feelings, loathing, and overwhelming. This is shown in the words Lovecraft used like nauseating fear, vague horror,
awestruck, and terror. Dagon was also filled with unnecessary information and unnecessary description in most of its parts. The language used added to
the story. Word choices like "putrid with the carcasses of decaying fish" and "unutterable hideousness" are undoubtedly unique. "Fathomless chaos of
eternal night" and "through my terror ran curious reminiscence" along with "slimy expanse of hellish black mire" are other examples of the strong
language Lovecraft used in most of his writings (Lovecraft, 1917).

DOCUMENT ANALYSIS– LUCRETIUS: EPICUREAN PHILOSPHY AT ROME
Within Lucretius' dialectic and poetic writings in Robert Latham's translation of Lucretius: On the Nature of the Universe, three major topics are
discussed: philosophy, religion, and science. Lucretius was devoted to the works of his teacher and renowned philosopher Epicurus, praising him as a
prophetic or god–like figure. His poetic prose uses a host of concrete examples to show validity in his beliefs. Lucretius effectively supports the
Epicurean worldview that everything can be explained by material forces. Memmius is the addressee of the poem, and Lucretius enlightens him to the
nature of happiness, how religion is based on superstition, and the idea of atoms composing earthly matter. Evaluating reality gives mankind the
natural answers to life's questions without concerning themselves with gods, prophets, or beliefs, and this was Lucretius' main task in his work.
Lucretius was a Roman poet who believed that the Epicurean systems provided the most important and valuable way of thinking. He pledged all of
his poetic and persuasive writing skills towards presenting Epicurus' teachings in a concise expose. A key Epicurean doctrine which he explores is the
concept of the Nature of Happiness. Philosophy, in this mindset, is a refuge from the trials and tribulations of the

In The Blink Of An Eye Sparknotes
I confess–I initially thought In the Blink of an Eye was going to be a pretentious, drawn–out book about the technical side of editing. A great sense of
dread flooded my body when I looked at the amount of pages I had to read. It is not the thickest book I have ever read, but I guessed the subject
matter would make reading it a long process. Fortunately, I was wrong––and I actually enjoyed reading this book. Murch did speak on some of the
technical aspects of editing, however; he focused on the art of editing and how editing affects the story of a film. It is easy to present different editing
systems and review their benefits and downfalls, but he dives deeper. He explains why something is cut or included in the frame. Most important, he

the most about this section is how long digital editing has been around. Everyone describes digital film editing as a new technological innovation;
however, it has been around for years. I think what is new is how accessible film software and equipment is for independent filmmakers. You do not
necessarily have to enroll in film school, nor to do you need to move to Los Angeles to make movies. Ordinary people can create, produce, and

Charles Lamb Two Races Of Man Sparknotes
Charles Lamb's essay, "Two Races of Man," presents a satirical attack upon those who are the borrowers within society. Within this attack his main
argument contains the notion that borrowers are negligent and full of greed from lack of money. Lamb constructs this with an ironic undertone,
displaying the borrowers as men of "generous manners". That they have no money to their name making them infallible and similar to that of an
"Augustan Majesty". In addition, the author rebukes borrowers for attempting to simplify the English language, so the only pronoun that exists is
"mine", by ridding the language of "meum and tuum." Furthermore, Lamb ironically exposes the jealousy felt by borrowers due to their lack of money,
stating that lenders should...show more content...
In order to create his ideas, Bacon elicits critical diction to serve as the basis for the entire essay. Continually he criticizes single, laymen for
viewing marriage and having a family as an end to their livelihood. That children are the "abatement to his riches," and lack of femininity within a
man's life causes the development of negative attributes such as being "cruel and coldhearted." Furthermore, that without marriage single men are
"facile and corrupt" due to the negative characteristics associated with no marriage. Moreover, Bacon repeatedly creates analogies to criticize the

That married men would are more likely to hold on to their money due to them needing to provide for their family and having developed the trait of
frugality. Bacon ingrained the rhetorical strategies of critical diction and analogy to depict the negative outcomes that men will face with a lack of

Nobody Knows Sparknotes
Making jokes is the best way for people to create connections. However, a person's sense of humor makes a huge difference in joking telling
because jokes can offend people and has various consequences. Making jokes about people is common between friends because a man can
understand that his friend only wants to get a couple laughs out of him and that his joke shouldn't be taken to heart. In the short story "Nobody
Knows," a man, who clearly has not mastered English, comes up to a random man asking him to explain a fight to a nearby cop. When the man says,

The kid throws a punch at the man and a ten second fight breaks out. The way everything played out, the man started the fight because the kid

so why would he make a joke about his dick for? Plus, talking about dick does lead to fights at times, depending on how people throw the word
"dick" around. After the ten second round ends, the man finds the stranger to help him explain the situation to the nearby cop. If I was the cop, the
first thing I would tell the man is, "Sir, please learn how to speak and write English properly because you sound like a kid trying to read a physics
textbook. And second of all, why would you hit a kid with a bottle if he tried to punch you?" The man could have easily done serious damage to the kid
and risk going to jail over a dick joke. Not to mention that he's older than the kid and he's the one telling the kid a dick joke. As the cop, all I would

Out Of My Mind Sparknotes

  • 1. Out Of My Mind Sparknotes Out of my Mind Book Report In the novel Out of my Mind by Sharon M. Draper, an eleven–year–old girl identified as Melody Brooks has a photographic memory, which is a side effect of cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a disease where you can't move, write, and most importantly, talk.. Eventually throughout the book Melody overcomes her fears and matures enough to accept that she is her own person. Melody is a bright girl, who has cerebral palsy, but when she gets a device that allows her to articulate, she changes the way other people perceive her. Throughout the most important weeks for Melody, she excels and matures for the most important event yet. She proves herself smart enough when she gets onto the Whiz kids team, but will she be able to help the team win the finals? An example of a major theme in the book is family, because Melody's mother and father as well as Mrs.V (Melody's kind/supportive neighbor) are always supporting Melody with her disorder. When Melody was a baby, they dropped her off at Mrs. V's house so she could babysit. At Mrs.V's house Mrs.V teaches Melody new words, by putting stickers with words all over her board...show more content... For example, she's there for Melody when she needs an extra pair of clothes to change into, or when she needs to feed Melody her lunch. She also helps Melody during classes if she needs to take a test/quiz or needs to do classwork. Towards the end of the book Catherine helps Melody exceptionally, because before the Whiz Kids quiz Melody drops tomato soup over her white t–shirt, so Catherine cleans it up. And also when she wants to take the actual quiz her teacher (Mr.D) doesn't think it's a good idea, so he says no. But then Catherine argues saying that everybody should be given a fair chance, and that those are the school rules. After Catherine argues Mr. D agrees and says yes and Melody comes in first place for the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Deadpool Sparknotes Deadpool Brings His Swords, Guns, and Hilarious Insults on Amazon Marvel's "Deadpool" makes fans love and hate this anti–hero, as the comic book character fights, and insults, his way to get his love back after an experiment to make him "super" goes horribly wrong. Ryan Reynolds portrays Wade Wilson, also known as Deadpool, a mercenary that takes jobs in New York City to get rid of bad guys by requests from clients. He meets an escort named Vanessa at a local bar, and their one–night stand turns into a long–term relationship. Wade enjoys his relationship with Vanessa for a year, but soon hits rock bottom when he's diagnosed with terminal cancer. This leads to Wade leaving Vanessa, and falling into a scam that gives him immortality, but a disfigured body. As he lives with an old, blind woman while he plans to find Ajax, real name Francis, in order to get the "nonexistent" cure for his disfigurement. Although this film seems dark with gory violence and evil plots, Wade consistently throws wisecracks and hilarious insults that will grab the viewers in the gut as they laugh. One of his most hilarious wisecrack is when he discovers that Ajax's real name is Francis, and his nickname comes from a cleaning product. From the discovery until the end of...show more content... However, what this character does is seek revenge on the villain that gave him a power of immortality, but disfigured his body as a result of activating the injection. Deadpool doesn't rescue anyone, except his girlfriend in the end, but fights and kills the super slaves under Ajax. Deadpool has never seen himself as a hero because he lacks the quality of a hero: the ideal, moral, and courageous person that people look up to. Instead, he aggressively takes action to get what he needs, and doesn't feel guilty after killing his Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. The Pact Sparknotes I would recommend, "The Pact: Three young men make a promise and fulfill a dream" to eleventh grade students for several reasons. First factor, throughout this whole novel it gives you a wakeup call. For example, life in college is not that easy as you think, they got in to a lot of trouble, and throughout all that they were given a second chance in life. Second factor, Depicts transition from high school to college. They knew college is different from high school because of their own experience. They struggled throughout college, they financially couldn't pay their books and other stuff they need to fro their classes. Then, this novel teaches you life lessons. Throughout this novel you will see how hard they had it and they still chased Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Ignatius did not worry about not knowing the French language, as he trusted that God would help him cope with language barriers as he did in the past. He walked seven–hundred miles to Paris from Salamanca. In Paris, Ignatius realized that he should focus more on education and postpone his efforts to help the marginalized and people in need. Ignatius realized that in Spain, he devoted too much time to helping others and not enough time getting educated. At the age of thirty–seven, Ignatius enrolled at the College of Montaigu to study humanities, which included the study of Latin grammar and literature. Ignatius had been given money by some of his Spanish benefactors so that he would not have to beg for alms. With this money, he found a room in a boarding house with other Spanish students and turned over the money he was given to another student there for safekeeping. Unfortunately, the student quickly spent the money and Ignatius had no money to pay for school or support himself. He left the boarding house and found a room at the Hospital Saint–Jacques, a hospice for pilgrims on their way to the shrine of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. However, the hospice was far away from Ignatius' school, giving Ignatius far too little time to study and too little time to beg arms. It also caused Ignatius to miss the morning hours of school due to the hospice's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Anne Frank Sparknotes Summary: In the beginning of the graphic novel, the authors depict the events of Anne's parents, Edith and Otto. The book continues to depict snapshots of her life including, Anne's beginning years in Frankfurt, her families immigration to Amsterdam, her view of the war. At the conclusion of the book the audience is exposed to her last years in the Annex where the Frank family was betrayed by an unknown source and reported to the German Security Police, where they were later deported to a concentration camp. The conclusion of the graphic novel, depicts her eventual death and the survival of her father, which lead to the publication of Anne's diary. • 6. The Fifth Season Sparknotes Okay, so this is how this is going to work... The deep book review will be split into different sections, one where I will dump a bunch of information about the storyline on the reader, another where I will rant about what makes this book deep but not good, and, finally, another about the author. The footnotes will be my way of interjecting Laszlo–esque commentary on what would normally be a more formal piece of writing without drastically altering the formality of the review. Throughout the book, The Fifth Season changes from Syenite to Damaya to, finally, a character referred to as 'you' (as you might expect, all chapters written from you's perspective are written in second person). As the book moves on, switching from character to character, similarities between Syenite and Damaya start to appear, until, chapter seventeen, when it is revealed Damaya is just a young Syenite. Towards the end, Syenite is revealed to be you (your name is Essun). So all along, when you thought you were reading the story of three different...show more content... The Fifth Season is definitely interesting, however, I sort of enjoyed reading it because of its' complexity, and, as it is part of a series, it has a sequel. This sequel gives you a glimpse into what is going on with Nassun and helps explain some stuff, namely, what the hell is happening. Well, Father Earth lost his favorite child, so, in an attempt to appease Father Earth, some of the stone eaters decided they should try and get his favorite child, the moon back. So, the book ends with Essun getting ready to catch the moon. Pure awesomeness aside, I feel like I liked it better when things were confusing. The second book, The Obelisk Gate, doesn't contain as many of the storyline scrambling mind–blowing revelations that made the first one so interesting, so it has to rely mostly on storyline. This means it is a bit more enjoyable to read, but it doesn't contain any of the things that, in my mind, make The Fifth Season deep book Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Bryan Lietz 3/5/13 English 3 Ms. Lindstrom Sparknotes and Cliffnotes both assist a reader and can help students interpret literature at a more in depth level, and help improve understanding the literary elements, character developments, and plot development that a author uses to help create the story. Both sites provide similar information, ranging from overall plot summaries and character analysis, but Sparknotes goes more into the literary aspect of the book, while cliffnotes focuses more on the character and his motives. In analyzing Jay Gatsby, Cliffnotes focuses much more on Gatsby himself and his underlying motives to his character, like "In assessing Gatsby, one must examine his blind pursuit of Daisy." The fact Cliffnotes does not contain a theme and motif section hampers the site considerably. What Cliffnotes offers instead Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Ready Player One Sparknotes Synthetic, pretend, mock, fake, these are all synonyms to the word virtual. "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline shows the positives and negatives to living entirely in a virtual world. Although there are favorable aspects to developing and nurturing online friendships or even relationships there are fallible aspects as well that seem to outnumber what may appear harmless at first. In this book we are shown 3 different sets of online relationships, that of best friends, a couple and "brothers". Aech and Wade are the first real relationship shown in this book and they model best friends. These two have been best friends for the past 4 years and have spent countless hours together playing video games, watching movies and just talking. Because ...show more content... Even though Shoto and Daito never met in real life, Shoto was hurt and felt resentment towards IOI when they murdered Daito. Shoto went through a time of grieving and pain after he lost Daito. Because someone in real life died his grief is understandable but it is shown through the amount of emotional pain he felt that Shoto truly saw Daito as a brother. Much like the death of Daito but in a less extreme circumstance, Wade experienced intense emotional pain when Art3mis broke up with him, he went through all of the normal pains and emotions anyone going through a break up would feel. Because they have made OASIS their reality they experience the same emotional pain that one would in real relationships, maybe even in more extreme cases. While we look at this game as just that, a game, they have made it their lives. The line between a videogame and an unhealthy life obsession was undoubtably crossed in the lives of these individuals. The fact that these individuals so secluded themselves from the real world that their closest friends were online is a sad truth. The side and benefits of real life interactions was missing from their lives because they became shut out from society thus making OASIS, a virtual reality, their Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Whiplash Sparknotes People want to be surrounded by other people. Nobody wants to be worthless. These two factors are what drive people to sacrifice themselves in order to belong. They sacrifice who they are because they need, not want, validation in their lives: a sense of belonging. Humans are social animals. They evolved to be social after discovering that the burden of work could be offset by dividing it with other people, otherwise known as working together. So if a person is in a group, it is in their best interest to stay in that group. Not everyone likes each other though, so to avoid being kicked out, one's next best interest is to keep good relations. The simplest way to do this is to follow basic social rules: etiquette. Since the rules are set by...show more content... People want meaning and subsistence in their lives. Some people want it more than others to varying degrees. In the film, Whiplash, Andrew Neiman is a young jazz drummer who strives to become the best. In one of the scenes, Neiman is eating dinner with his family; the family praise his brothers, who are star football players, but scoff at Neiman's achievements in band. This causes Neiman to feel discontent. Thus he begins his ambitious pursuit at becoming the best drummer. He dumps his girlfriend, turns his back on his family, and ultimately pushes himself to the brink of his ability and sanity: all for what? Neiman wants to prove not to his family, but to everyone that he belongs on the drum kit. He is willing to sacrifice everything just to prove that. In another film, The Social Network, socially estranged Mark Zuckerberg has the extreme desire to be part of the high class of society. He gets in an argument with his only friend, Eduardo Saverin, over a business deal for Facebook. Zuckerberg asks him if they want to go back to being a joke. Zuckerberg ultimately alienates him by removing him off the credits of Facebook. In this scenario, Zuckerberg sacrifices his friend so he can continue to chase his fantasy of belonging to the high class. In both cases, the two main characters sacrificed a part of them because they believed they could be something greater from it–– kind of like Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Robert Herrick Sparknotes "The Vine", are all pieces of Robert Herrick's intriguing work, but nonetheless, if his writings are analyzed more carefully than just the entertainment that emits on the surface, could he truly be a deranged individual? For my writing, I will be picking apart the psyche of Robert Herrick from two different standpoints. I will be using an old Freudian method, and a modern psychoanalysis of Robert Herrick for added structure, realism, and integrity. Freudian methodology was introduced in roughly the 1890's (Cooper–White, P. (2015)) and was used religiously during its time. It was developed by a psychologist namedSigmund Freud who focused on a lot of unconscious thought processes and developmental methodologies. Freud liked to focus his work...show more content... Robert Herrick speaks about this "vine" as it is his male sexual appendage that wraps and intertwines itself within Lucia, his lover in this poem, so she may not escape his grasp. The speaker of Robert Herrick's writing describes that he is so in love with this subject, Lucia, and his desire to have her for his own because he needs structure for himself. The tone throughout this whole poem is very confused and chaotic because the speaker seems as if he is jumping between the need of love from Lucia its joyous feelings, or for the benefit of his own sanity so he will not remain isolated and alone. From a Freudian perspective of psychoanalysis, I would look into Robert Herrick having a deeply repressed love and misconnection with his mother, such as an Oedipus complex, and this is why he is so needing of the love from Lucia. The Oedipus complex resides within the relation of a blood–family; a mother, a father, and a son (Son– Oedipus complex; daughter– Electra complex). The Oedipus complex revolves around the envious feelings towards the father, from the son, because of the bond that the father has to the mother. Because there is a lack of a loving bond between the mother and the son, the son unconsciously has the Oedipus complex, also known as "penis envy". In Robert Herrick's, "The Vine", the lover of the speaker in the poem is named Lucia. This name would be a large part of his psychoanalytic research. The etymology of the name "Lucia" takes the Latin meaning of "Graceful light". If the name is changed just slightly, to something with an extremely similar etymology, is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Sparknotes Machine Man The novel Machine Man by Max Barry starts off with the introduction of the main character, Charles Neumann, who misplaces his cellphone and comes to realization that he is completely helpless and disconnected from the world without it. While he is contemplating his thoughts, he discovers his cellphone. He is working on heavy machinery at the time of discovery and the distraction of finding his cellphone results in him accidentally getting his leg crushed by the heavy duty clamp. Due to the workplace related injury, the company that Neumann works for, pays for the prosthetic leg. However, Neumann is not happy with the prosthetic and refers to it as a "bucket on a stick". Neumann decides to build himself a better, more powerful, and a smarter...show more content... The behavior of Charles regarding his misplaced cellphone is one which I can empathize with. When we use certain types of technologies, we become used to it and become part of our daily lives, gadgets such as smartphones and tablets become an extension of our bodies. In a way they are limbs of our bodies and a loss of such objects can cause us much discomfort before we get used to it and adapt to the new situation. The character of Charles is relatable due to the fact that the choices that he faces and world that he lives in is similar to our own where we face similar choices as an individual and as a society on issues that are relevant to us today. In our world people are already using developments in technology in order to influence outcomes of events in fields such as sports. The use of performance enhancing drugs to improve body function, the use of clothing that reduces air friction in order to break records are issues in sports that are relevant in today's world. The main question that comes to mind is regarding the "fairness" or "unfairness" of the issue and the varying degree of assistance that can be considered fair or unfair. In case of using prosthetics, is it enough just being able to walk, or should the loss of limbs and the subsequent use of prosthetics lead to a more enhanced and improved human experience as Charles does in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. We Are Seven Sparknotes What can a child know about death? Death and other major life events may be perceived as something catastrophic, while others view them as opportunities. William Wordsworth, a pioneer of English Romanticism, uses poetry as a means of emotional expression. This genre serves as a homage to individualism, commonly encountered events in nature and emotions ranging from fear to those faced handling the rapid changes in the world. Growing up in rural England during the Industrial Revolution, one is provided with a serene environment to propagate the views of this new artistic movement. Written in late 18th century as part of Lyrical Ballads, a poetry collection, William Wordsworthcomposes the poem, "We Are Seven" to illustrate the interaction between...show more content... Throughout his life, the importance of church, its precepts and the significance of family was cultivated within him. During the 1700's, the church was the center of life. would pray, congregate, and socialize. Written during the Romantic Era, his writing enforces the significance of religion and how it pertains to rural life. In Wordsworth's poem, these values are recognized as the little girl states, "Then did the little Maid reply, Seven boys and girls are we; Two of us in the church–yard lie, Beneath the church–yard tree" (Wordsworth pg. 128). She again does not want to accept the fact that they are dead but perhaps can find a new way to salvation through the church. Being buried in the church yard instills more importance and prestige to the church itself rather than just for the comfort it provides. Fortunately, this church is easily accessible and centrally located to all of the local society. The little girl being very enmeshed with the church shows that she wants to feel closer to God and possibly connect with her deceased siblings. The church may also provide her with a path to the afterworld with a means of remembering her sibling's legacies. Wordsworth, being religious, uses the church and its importance in rural life to get his points across to his audience. Additionally, he uses the church yard as a place accepting of all and where the kids can play, feel safe and comfortable. The locale of this poem is integral not only to Wordsworth but also to the family of seven he writes about in his Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Stephen King On Writing Sparknotes Stephen King is a very complex, experienced writer. He has elaborate stories that catch any type of reader. In the book Stephen King On Writing he teaches us his experiences with writing and in his own opinion how writing works, from the inside out. He shares that the editor or person revising your page may not always be correct but to take the advice given and use it to your best in your writing. Imagination is only as far as we let it go and that we can stretch our brains to reach boundaries there were thought unapproachable. Although being descriptive is the ideal way to write, being too descriptive can prevent you from actually getting your point across. Taking things too literal from a person revising your paper may lower confidence, or even make your paper worse, but what I have learned from reading this elaborate book is that you have to be able to take...show more content... Although some may not have the mind that other do, imagination is a wild thing. King states "sometimes the most basic skills can create things far beyond our expectations?" I take this as if that basic skills building up can create or make an imagination grow to its full potential. The better you get at something and the more it is practiced the better you become at it. With building stronger skills comes a stronger imagination and put those skills to the test. Imagination allows us to create things unimaginable. Description is a key component in writing an essay. In the book, King tells us that creating a good writer out of a decent writer is all possible as long as the writer practices fundamentals and a huge fundamental is being able to be descriptive. Staring an essay you must be able to use words that can grab the readers attention and make them want to read more. Using strong adjectives as in humungous, majestic, and extravagant are a big way to grab attention to the audience. • 14. H.P. Lovecraft's 'Dagon': Summary and Analysis Dagon is a short story written by the American horror and fantasy writer H.P. Lovecraft in 1917. The story began with an unknown narrator telling the story of his abduction by the German sea–raiders. Later on, the protagonist continues the story of his successful escape in a small boat from these sea–raiders. After being lost for days in the sea, the man became haunted by his dreams, nightmares, and delusions. He told the story of how he was asleep and unexpectedly found himself in the middle of a black mire in the middle of the ocean after his boat had drifted. He went into the mire in an attempt to find dry land, a ship, or someone who can help him. He found a white monolithic statue with aquatic hieroglyphics on it and a giant creature looks like a giant fish worshiping it. He then starts his hallucination where he says that he ran back to his boat singing and laughing. Afterwards, he woke up in San Francisco hospital and knew that a ship saved him. Due to his hallucinations and nightmares, he became a morphine addict and he wrote this story as his suicide letter. Dagon is written in a very distinctive way that identifies Lovecraft's writing style. It is chaotic and sounds like the blabbering of a madman. The beginning of Dagon was definitely an attention getter, yet what followed later was incongruous. The story is dark, ornate, complicated, and Lovecraft description is reminiscent. It is also filled with pathos, mostly fear. It is chaotic with a lot of emotional exaggeration in it. The sense of horror was intense along with agonizing feelings, loathing, and overwhelming. This is shown in the words Lovecraft used like nauseating fear, vague horror, awestruck, and terror. Dagon was also filled with unnecessary information and unnecessary description in most of its parts. The language used added to the story. Word choices like "putrid with the carcasses of decaying fish" and "unutterable hideousness" are undoubtedly unique. "Fathomless chaos of eternal night" and "through my terror ran curious reminiscence" along with "slimy expanse of hellish black mire" are other examples of the strong language Lovecraft used in most of his writings (Lovecraft, 1917). • 15. Lucretius Summary Sparknotes DOCUMENT ANALYSIS: THINK OF BETTER TITLE Molly Pearson HIST 121 – Intellectual Origins of the Contemporary West October 4, 2017 DOCUMENT ANALYSIS– LUCRETIUS: EPICUREAN PHILOSPHY AT ROME Within Lucretius' dialectic and poetic writings in Robert Latham's translation of Lucretius: On the Nature of the Universe, three major topics are discussed: philosophy, religion, and science. Lucretius was devoted to the works of his teacher and renowned philosopher Epicurus, praising him as a prophetic or god–like figure. His poetic prose uses a host of concrete examples to show validity in his beliefs. Lucretius effectively supports the Epicurean worldview that everything can be explained by material forces. Memmius is the addressee of the poem, and Lucretius enlightens him to the nature of happiness, how religion is based on superstition, and the idea of atoms composing earthly matter. Evaluating reality gives mankind the natural answers to life's questions without concerning themselves with gods, prophets, or beliefs, and this was Lucretius' main task in his work. Lucretius was a Roman poet who believed that the Epicurean systems provided the most important and valuable way of thinking. He pledged all of his poetic and persuasive writing skills towards presenting Epicurus' teachings in a concise expose. A key Epicurean doctrine which he explores is the concept of the Nature of Happiness. Philosophy, in this mindset, is a refuge from the trials and tribulations of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. In The Blink Of An Eye Sparknotes I confess–I initially thought In the Blink of an Eye was going to be a pretentious, drawn–out book about the technical side of editing. A great sense of dread flooded my body when I looked at the amount of pages I had to read. It is not the thickest book I have ever read, but I guessed the subject matter would make reading it a long process. Fortunately, I was wrong––and I actually enjoyed reading this book. Murch did speak on some of the technical aspects of editing, however; he focused on the art of editing and how editing affects the story of a film. It is easy to present different editing systems and review their benefits and downfalls, but he dives deeper. He explains why something is cut or included in the frame. Most important, he examines...show more content... Murch talks about digital filmmaking throughout the novel, but in the afterword he explains the consequences of going digital. What surprised me the most about this section is how long digital editing has been around. Everyone describes digital film editing as a new technological innovation; however, it has been around for years. I think what is new is how accessible film software and equipment is for independent filmmakers. You do not necessarily have to enroll in film school, nor to do you need to move to Los Angeles to make movies. Ordinary people can create, produce, and distribute their own Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Charles Lamb Two Races Of Man Sparknotes Charles Lamb's essay, "Two Races of Man," presents a satirical attack upon those who are the borrowers within society. Within this attack his main argument contains the notion that borrowers are negligent and full of greed from lack of money. Lamb constructs this with an ironic undertone, displaying the borrowers as men of "generous manners". That they have no money to their name making them infallible and similar to that of an "Augustan Majesty". In addition, the author rebukes borrowers for attempting to simplify the English language, so the only pronoun that exists is "mine", by ridding the language of "meum and tuum." Furthermore, Lamb ironically exposes the jealousy felt by borrowers due to their lack of money, stating that lenders should...show more content... In order to create his ideas, Bacon elicits critical diction to serve as the basis for the entire essay. Continually he criticizes single, laymen for viewing marriage and having a family as an end to their livelihood. That children are the "abatement to his riches," and lack of femininity within a man's life causes the development of negative attributes such as being "cruel and coldhearted." Furthermore, that without marriage single men are "facile and corrupt" due to the negative characteristics associated with no marriage. Moreover, Bacon repeatedly creates analogies to criticize the behaviors and views of single men. That they think that "girdles to garters to be bonds and shackles" depicting their view that marriage is an end to freedom. In addition, he claims that single men are more likely to donate since "charity will hardly water the ground where it must first fill a pool." That married men would are more likely to hold on to their money due to them needing to provide for their family and having developed the trait of frugality. Bacon ingrained the rhetorical strategies of critical diction and analogy to depict the negative outcomes that men will face with a lack of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Akaky Akakievich Sparknotes higher ranking positions with better pay. Which is something Gogol saw while he was living in Russia. Once Akaky came up with the 80 roubles he went out with Petrovich to buy cloth for his new overcoat. And here we see a different shade of Akaky, this man is finally getting something special for himself. "His heart, generally so quiet, began to beat" (60). This is another significant part of the story because before this Akaky might as well have been dead inside. He barely showed any emotions and it was as if he didn't care for anything. He did not feel anything, he just went on living life. In a sense this coat gave him life, in a way it gave Akaky a sense of hope. This coat was essentially the key for him to enter into this "superior"...show more content... Which is defined as supernatural punishment of a person, a group of people, or everyone by a deity in response to some action. This is Gogol's way of saying that no matter where you stand in rank, you can't escape previous actions. Specially because 19th century Russia there was a lot of class oppression on your common man, just like Akaky in the story. We see how Akaky suffers through so much during his short lived life. Many of these things coming from higher ranking individuals in Russian bureaucracy. The theme of how many people in lower classes go unappreciated and unnoticed for how they contribute to society is also seen in the short story. We see how little importance was put on Akaky's job and how easily he could of been replaced by anyone. All of these themes are very similar, and mainly revolve around this idea of how Gogol saw Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Nobody Knows Sparknotes Making jokes is the best way for people to create connections. However, a person's sense of humor makes a huge difference in joking telling because jokes can offend people and has various consequences. Making jokes about people is common between friends because a man can understand that his friend only wants to get a couple laughs out of him and that his joke shouldn't be taken to heart. In the short story "Nobody Knows," a man, who clearly has not mastered English, comes up to a random man asking him to explain a fight to a nearby cop. When the man says, "Tell the cop that guys like that, guys that don't know the scene" the first impression of him is that he's a regular at the bar and that the other man was new to the bar. This kid starts...show more content... The kid throws a punch at the man and a ten second fight breaks out. The way everything played out, the man started the fight because the kid could have interpreted the joke has the man insulting his art skills. Another reason why the man is at fault is that he didn't even know the person so why would he make a joke about his dick for? Plus, talking about dick does lead to fights at times, depending on how people throw the word "dick" around. After the ten second round ends, the man finds the stranger to help him explain the situation to the nearby cop. If I was the cop, the first thing I would tell the man is, "Sir, please learn how to speak and write English properly because you sound like a kid trying to read a physics textbook. And second of all, why would you hit a kid with a bottle if he tried to punch you?" The man could have easily done serious damage to the kid and risk going to jail over a dick joke. Not to mention that he's older than the kid and he's the one telling the kid a dick joke. As the cop, all I would need to say is, "You're a grown man and what comes to your mind is telling a dick joke to some kid you've never Get more content on HelpWriting.net
