The Kubernetes Cluster API (CAPI) sub-project aims to simplify and unify the Kubernetes cluster lifecycle management. With almost a dozen provider implementations, we decided to add our own provider implementation for Apache CloudStack. But how simple was it? With several CRDs, controllers, API versions, and even experimental features, and e2e tests to develop, it’s easy to get lost in the details and can seem quite overwhelming. Join us to discover how we did it! We detail our journey, from building an initial prototype over a weekend to a full-fledged, production-ready application, and deployed in an environment with over 10s of 1000s of hosts! We share the pitfalls, hacks, learnings, and key takeaways from our journey to develop CAPC – the CAPI Provider for Apache CloudStack. David is a CloudStack committer, member of the Kubernetes Org and Software Engineer at ShapeBlue. ----------------------------------------- CloudStack Collaboration Conference 2022 took place on 14th-16th November in Sofia, Bulgaria and virtually. Apache Bigtop as an open source Hadoop distribution, focuses on developing packaging, testing and deployment solutions that help infrastructure engineers to build up their own customized big data platform as easy as possible. However, packages deployed in production require a solid CI testing framework to ensure its quality. Numbers of Hadoop component must be ensured to work perfectly together as well. In this presentation, we'll talk about how Bigtop deliver its containerized CI framework which can be directly replicated by Bigtop users. The core revolution here are the newly developed Docker Provisioner that leveraged Docker for Hadoop deployment and Docker Sandbox for developer to quickly start a big data stack. The content of this talk includes the containerized CI framework, technical detail of Docker Provisioner and Docker Sandbox, a hierarchy of docker images we designed, and several components we developed such as Bigtop Toolchain to achieve build automation.

Configuring and maintaining a continuous integration environment is quite a bit of work. It requires ongoing resources both in terms of manpower and hardware infrastructure. As an application evolves so does the number of ongoing projects. The challenge is creating a scalable continuous integration environment which does not impede development and can handle the complexities of Java EE testing. This session covers how to setup and configure a cloud-based continuous integration environment for Java EE applications. The presentation will focus on demonstrating how to use Atlassian Bamboo running on AWS to build and test a Maven/Gradle Java EE project that uses Arquillian for testing. Topics that will be covered include creating a custom AWS VM for use with Bamboo, creating an Amazon VPC (Virtual Private Cloud) along with test database using Amazon RDS. The presentation will delve into the specifics of testing EJBs, WebSocket endpoints, RESTful web services, as well as performing load testing in this environment. Security, cost control, and build monitoring will be covered as well.

One of the primary purposes of CloudLabs in Flex is to provide optimized rack level solutions while integrating third-party open source vendor products. With the fast growing adoption of cloud computing, many companies are looking to shift their workloads into the cloud. You’re at the Cloud Foundry Summit, which means you are by definition a cloud-native enthusiast. There’s no question that building apps in this architectural style will produce resilient, scalable software in an agile manner, and allow you to operate it far more efficiently than you’ve been able to in the past. But you’ve also got a whole lot of software in your company’s portfolio that isn’t there yet. Do you have to resign yourself to the pains of managing those applications the old way until you can finally refactor them to be cloud-native? Kubo to the rescue. You can run legacy applications on Kubo without significant refactoring – pure and simple. As an added bonus, it allows you to satisfy the CIO mandate of running containers (check). But it’s far more than that – running those workloads on Kubo offers advantages over running them on traditional virtualized infrastructure. This session covers those advantages –resource consolidation, health management, multi-cloud and more. It will also present the abstractions in Kubernetes, things like pods and stateful sets, that support running legacy workloads in the cloud environments that are far more distributed and changing than they have been in the past. It’s a first step to cloud-native.

In cloud computing environments, VMs require fast access to resources like storage and networking. The hardware that the VMs access is implemented in software and/or by passing through a dedicated hardware device. Software-based solutions consume extra CPU cycles, thus resulting in poor performance. Also, these require to expose a device-model to the guest, thus increasing the attack surface. Conversely, hardware passthrough provides better performance and security but can be expensive in terms of the number of physical resources, since each device is dedicated to a single VM. This talk focuses on how Vates is working on sharing hardware resources among VMs by relying on dedicated processors named Data Processing Units (DPU).
