www.organicsolutions.in
Brief Mechanism- Growth of Beneficial Microbes

OS Microbes grow rapidly in the
plant by using the organic load as
the substrate
OS microbes create an
environment where native and
beneficial microbes become the
dominant species
These beneficial microbes along
with OS microbes form bio-films
in the plant, thereby increasing
the MLSS and stabilizing the
plant

www.organicsolutions.in
Brief Mechanism- Reduction of Pathogens

Blend of heterotrophic and
phototropic bacteria
Multi-strain culture based on the
principle of co-existence
Strains are carefully selected
based on metabolic properties
Reduction of pathogens by
‘Competitive Exclusion’ as they do
not get sufficient oxygen and food

www.organicsolutions.in
Brief Mechanism- Suppression of Odor
Odor substances are of weak alkaline nature predominantly
represented by ammonia. Ammonia is neutralized by the organic
acids produced by OS microbes
Phototropic bacteria utilizes odor substances like Hydrogen Sulphide
(H2S) as hydrogen donors in its growth cycle
The enzymes and anti-oxidants produced by OS microbes reduce
odor further
Foul odor is emitted in the process of putrefaction. Application of OS
shifts the balance of the environment towards fermentation.

Brief Mechanism- Reduction of Sludge
Primary Sludge serves as a substrate for the rapid growth of OS
microbes
Secondary Sludge is maintained by the process of autolysis – self
digestion

OS Composting Models

www.organicsolutions.in
Composting Basics
• COMPOST is not a bio-fertilizer. It is a substrate (food) for soil
microbes. They in turn produce the nutrients required by plants
• As a result, you add compost today and see the results much later
• Compost if for SOIL and not for PLANTS while chemical/synthetic
fertilizers are for PLANTS and not SOIL.
• The nutrients in compost cannot be directly used by plants, therefore
NPK value of compost is not that important.
• Compost is a SCIENCE, needs to be understood
• Balance of different type of biomass is a must
Composting Basics
Bulking Agents

Energy Materials

Balanced Materials

· Low Moisture
· High Porosity
· Low Nitrogen

· High Moisture
· Low Porosity
· High Nitrogen

· Low to medium moisture
· Medium Porosity
· Medium Nitrogen

· Wood chips
· Sawdust
· Grass Hay
· Wheat or Paddy

· Corn Stalks
· Sugarcane leaves

· Kitchen Waste
· Grass Clippings
· Animal dung
· Horticulture waste

· Tree trimmings
· Dry Leaves
· Shrubs
Composting Basics
•
•
•
•
•

Particle Size – smaller the better (< 0.5 inches)
Mixing – layer by layer or together
Moisture – starting 60-70%
Aeration – essential for aerobic composting
Placement of heaps – Should be made perpendicular to wind
direction for maximum aeration.
• Microbes – composting catalyst is essential
• Types of compost – decomposed or fermented
Brief Mechanism - Composting

1.

2.

3.

Process starts with blending of
different kinds of wastes together with
sufficient moisture, nutrients and
porosity.
OS1-SW acts as a catalyst in the
composting process.
The process goes through a number
of temperature phases
•
Initial heating phase where
soluble components are
degraded
•
Thermophilic conditions where
cellulose is degraded. This is
accompanied by loss of
heat, water and carbon dioxide
thereby reducing the mass of
the waste.
•
Curing and stabilization with a
drop in temperatures.

www.organicsolutions.in
Enclosed Composting
1. Select proper place
2. Create an enclosure
3. Soak biomass in diluted
OS1-SW and place inside
the enclosure
4. Mix of green and dry waste
preferred
5. Place kitchen waste in the
centre and bury in
garden/farm waste
6. Maintain moisture
Heap Composting
1. Take an idea of wind direction.
Make heap perpendicular for
maximum aeration
2. Look for a place in shade. This is
essential to retain moisture
3. Dilute OS1-sw and spray ground
4. Place a layer of plant waste and
spray OS1-sw culture
5. Place a layer of food waste/animal
waste and spray culture
6. Place a layer of soil (preferably
clay soil) and repeat spraying
7. Go on layering till heap reaches a
height of 3 ft
8. Add bulking agents in between
9. Place cloth or gunny sacks only on
top to retain moisture
Pit Composting
1. Dig a pit about 2 ft deep, 8 feet in
length and 4 feet in width
2. Heap the soil separately
3. Spray diluted OS1-sw on soil
4. Make a layer of garden
leaves/grass or weeds
5. Place kitchen waste in center and
cover it with soil after rinsing with
OS1-sw
6. Repeat the process of spraying
each layer and covering with soil,
each time you place fresh waste.
Windrow Composting
1.

2.

3.
4.
5.

6.

7.

Windrows are made with press
mud/MSW, perpendicular to wind
direction to get maximum aeration
Diluted OS1-sw is sprayed over the
windrows. The dilution ratio depends on
the initial moisture of biomass
Only one time application is required
Roughly 1 litre of OS1-SW mother
culture is required for 10 tons of waste
Turning of the windrows is required to
mix OS1 homogeneously with the
waste and also to facilitate aeration
Initially the temperature of the heap will
rise which would also destroy weed
seeds and pathogens
Compost is ready with 30-45 days
GOING GREEN IS NO LONGER AN
OPTION BUT THE ONLY MEANS TO A
SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
LET US MAKE IT A REALITY
TOGETHER

  • 51. ORGANIC SOLID WASTE Benefits of OS composting Faster Composting Production of good quality compost for trees & plants Foul odor suppression Cost Savings Conservation of natural resources Reduces waste sent to landfills – reduces your carbon footprint www.organicsolutions.in
  • 53. Composting Basics • COMPOST is not a bio-fertilizer. It is a substrate (food) for soil microbes. They in turn produce the nutrients required by plants • As a result, you add compost today and see the results much later • Compost if for SOIL and not for PLANTS while chemical/synthetic fertilizers are for PLANTS and not SOIL. • The nutrients in compost cannot be directly used by plants, therefore NPK value of compost is not that important. • Compost is a SCIENCE, needs to be understood • Balance of different type of biomass is a must
  • 54. Composting Basics Bulking Agents Energy Materials Balanced Materials · Low Moisture · High Porosity · Low Nitrogen · High Moisture · Low Porosity · High Nitrogen · Low to medium moisture · Medium Porosity · Medium Nitrogen · Wood chips · Sawdust · Grass Hay · Wheat or Paddy straw · Corn Stalks · Sugarcane leaves · Kitchen Waste · Grass Clippings · Animal dung · Horticulture waste · Tree trimmings · Dry Leaves · Shrubs
  • 55. Composting Basics • • • • • Particle Size – smaller the better (< 0.5 inches) Mixing – layer by layer or together Moisture – starting 60-70% Aeration – essential for aerobic composting Placement of heaps – Should be made perpendicular to wind direction for maximum aeration. • Microbes – composting catalyst is essential • Types of compost – decomposed or fermented
  • 56. Brief Mechanism - Composting 1. 2. 3. Process starts with blending of different kinds of wastes together with sufficient moisture, nutrients and porosity. OS1-SW acts as a catalyst in the composting process. The process goes through a number of temperature phases • Initial heating phase where soluble components are degraded • Thermophilic conditions where cellulose is degraded. This is accompanied by loss of heat, water and carbon dioxide thereby reducing the mass of the waste. • Curing and stabilization with a drop in temperatures. www.organicsolutions.in
  • 57. Enclosed Composting 1. Select proper place 2. Create an enclosure 3. Soak biomass in diluted OS1-SW and place inside the enclosure 4. Mix of green and dry waste preferred 5. Place kitchen waste in the centre and bury in garden/farm waste 6. Maintain moisture
  • 58. Heap Composting 1. Take an idea of wind direction. Make heap perpendicular for maximum aeration 2. Look for a place in shade. This is essential to retain moisture 3. Dilute OS1-sw and spray ground 4. Place a layer of plant waste and spray OS1-sw culture 5. Place a layer of food waste/animal waste and spray culture 6. Place a layer of soil (preferably clay soil) and repeat spraying 7. Go on layering till heap reaches a height of 3 ft 8. Add bulking agents in between 9. Place cloth or gunny sacks only on top to retain moisture
  • 59. Pit Composting 1. Dig a pit about 2 ft deep, 8 feet in length and 4 feet in width 2. Heap the soil separately 3. Spray diluted OS1-sw on soil 4. Make a layer of garden leaves/grass or weeds 5. Place kitchen waste in center and cover it with soil after rinsing with OS1-sw 6. Repeat the process of spraying each layer and covering with soil, each time you place fresh waste.
  • 60. Windrow Composting 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Windrows are made with press mud/MSW, perpendicular to wind direction to get maximum aeration Diluted OS1-sw is sprayed over the windrows. The dilution ratio depends on the initial moisture of biomass Only one time application is required Roughly 1 litre of OS1-SW mother culture is required for 10 tons of waste Turning of the windrows is required to mix OS1 homogeneously with the waste and also to facilitate aeration Initially the temperature of the heap will rise which would also destroy weed seeds and pathogens Compost is ready with 30-45 days
  • 61. GOING GREEN IS NO LONGER AN OPTION BUT THE ONLY MEANS TO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE LET US MAKE IT A REALITY TOGETHER www.organicsolutions.in
