The Ancient Mayans discovered chocolate from the cacao plant and used the beans to make a spicy, frothy drink consumed daily. They ground cacao beans using mano and metate tools and mixed it with other ingredients like cornmeal, chilies, and honey. The Mayans also used cacao beans as a form of currency to trade for goods like jade, cloth, and feathers. Additionally, the Aztec leader Montezuma was known to drink 50 goblets of thick, red chocolate daily and discard the gold goblets afterwards since he valued the chocolate more than gold.
