Iloilo City has a long and rich history dating back to the 13th century when it was first settled by Bornean datus fleeing tyranny. It was originally called Irong-Irong due to the shape of the river, and became a prosperous trading port under the Spanish in the 1800s. Iloilo played a key role in Philippine independence, with the last Spanish governor surrendering there on Christmas Day 1898. Today, Iloilo City is a major economic hub in the Western Visayas region, with thriving industries, tourism, education, and as the regional center. It has low crime, a high quality of life, and the local government has prioritized urban development, heritage preservation, and community

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
3. The word “Iloilo City” came from the shape
of the city, cut by the river which looks like
the shape of a nose, “Irong-Irong”, nose-
like, later became Iloilo.
4.
5. The Maragtas Legend tells the story of Iloilo way back in
the 13th century, when Datu Puti and his fellow Datus, fled
from the tyranny of Sultan Makatunao of Borneo and
landed at the mouth of the Siwaragan River, now known as
the town of San Joaquin, and eventually settled there.
At the that time, people called the "Atis", who were ruled
by King Marikudo and Queen Maniwangtiwang, inhabited
Panay. King Marikudo bartered the lowlands of Panay
Island for a golden hat, "saduk", and a long gold necklace,
"manangyad", and other assorted gifts to the Bornean
Datus. The latter then took complete control of the island
with the "Atis" retiring to the mountains.
6. It was Datu Paiburong who was assigned in Irong-Irong. Panay
Island was ruled under the Code of Kalantiao, where peace and
prosperity reigned for 300 years. But this was disrupted when
the Spaniards came and established the provincial government.
As early as 1855, Iloilo opened to the world of trade and
became the biggest port in the Philippines and premier
province of the country because of various economic activities.
Municipio de Iloilo became a city under the Bacura Law in 1893.
Because it progressed steadily, the Commonwealth Act No. 158
incorporated the surrounding towns of Lapaz, Jaro, Mandurriao
and Arevalo to form Iloilo City and was finally inaugurated on
Aug. 25, 1937, and was dubbed as the "Queen City of the
South". Gen. Martin Delgado became the first governor of the
province of Iloilo.
7.
8. The City of Iloilo, also known as
Ciudad sang Iloilo, Dakbanwa sang
Iloilo, City of Love, original Queen
City of the South, and ‘La Muy Noble
Cuidad’ (Most Commendable City), is
a remarkably urbanized town in the
Philippines and it is the main city of
the province of Iloilo. It is additionally
the regional centre of WesternVisayas
and moreover the middle of the Iloilo-
Guimaras Metropolitan area.The city
of Iloilo has an extremely prosperous
history you would need to expect a
lengthy novella than the usual short
article post.
9. Going back to history, Iloilo has already
established much contact with Spaniards
way back early 1800s. In 1855, Iloilo had
become the second most important port of
call with the colony due to transshipment
of sugar received from Negros Islands. The
little city was then given the title of ‘La
Muy Noble Ciudad’ (The Best Noble City) by
the Queen Regent of Spain.Towards the
turn of the 20th century, Iloilo City was
second to Manila – with a range of stores
along side iconic Calle Real selling items
from different parts of the world,
telephone network system in 1894,
agriculture experimental station in Lapaz
at 1888, and an Arts andTrade school in
1891.
10. Moreover, American effect during the
latter years delivered large universities
including Central Philippine University,
the first Baptist and 2nd private
American university in Asia and in the
country) and Iloilo Mission Hospital,
the first protestant hospital in the
country. Iloilo’s rich history is not just
visible in the old books in the library –
it displays on the intricately designed
facades in buildings, existence, and
restoration of heritage sites, as well as
the undeniable Ilonggo attitude
associated with a very ‘maluming’
(sweet) accent.

of Antique to the
west, Capiz to the north,
the Jintotolo Channel to the
northeast, the Guimaras
Strait to the east, and
the Iloilo Strait and Panay
Gulf to the southwest.
13.
14. “Philippine Independence was
declared in Kawit, Cavite. But the
actual realization of our independence
happened here in Iloilo,” said Iloilo
Provincial Board Member Demy
Sonza.
A recognized historian, Sonza was
referring to the surrender of Spanish
Governor-General Diego de los Ríos on
Christmas Day of 1898 in Iloilo City,
considered as the last Spanish capital
in the country.
The surrender of De los Rios came
more than six months after Emilio
Aguinaldo declared independence at
the balcony of his house in Kawit.
Sonza noted how the majority of
Filipinos have forgotten the dual roles
played by Iloilo in the country’s road to
independence.
18. Iloilo City is a hub for trade, commerce, finance, technology, medical
tourism, hospitality, real estate, tourism, education, and industry in
the Western Visayas region. Major industries in the city include
management of port facilities, telecommunications infrastructure
and utilities, banking and finance, retail trading, real estate, tourism
and business process outsourcing. The local government has
provided incentives to businesses in certain investment areas, such
as income tax holidays and free issuance of permits and licenses. It is
the home of Mang Inasal headquartered in Iloilo.
19.
20. The modernly built Iloilo
International Airport is the 5th

the Port of Iloilo which is one of the
historical ports in the Philippine
islands is now one of the busiest
ports and natural harbor in the
country by terms of passenger
movement and cargo handling;
and with the on-going building
construction boom especially in the
real estate and retail sectors. Iloilo
city has the lowest crime rate in
entire Philippines, lowest level of
corruption, highest life expectancy
in Visayas and Mindanao, huge
concentration of middle class and
rank 1 in happiness index, and the
most business-friendly city.
21. At present, Iloilo ranks 3rd in the
country as the city with most
deposits or savings account, fueled
by OFW remittances, IT-BPO
industry, and the local industries.
The surge of microfinancial and
other lending institutions in the
city has also sprouted. It is the
headquarters of LifeBank MFI, the
Iloilo's largest homegrown
microfinancial institution (3rd
largest microfinancial institution in
the country) with ~500 branches
across the Philippines.
Queen City Development
Bank (QueenBank) which is owned
by the Florete Group, is one of the
founding member of Megalink (the
first bank outside of Manila to
become a member of it) has its
headquarters and 1st branch in
Iloilo City.
22. There are myriad of selections of
attractions in the city that tourists can
visit - heritage landmarks, museums,
art galleries, parks, and restaurants,
to name a few. Nightlife in the metro
with Smallville Complex as the mecca
for party-goers is flocked by revellers
every night especially on Friday and
weekends.

tourism adds also to the city's charm
which magnets visitors. Centuries old
churches, old edifices and mansions of
well known Ilonggo families, magnets
sightseers from different places who
wants to discover Iloilo City's rich and
glorious past. Iloilo City is also
respected gastronomic capital with
famous dishes originated in the area
that gained popularity throughout the
country - La Paz Batchoy, Pancit
Molo, Kansi, Laswa, and KBL (Kadyos,
Baboy kag Langka).

parks, open spaces and gardens
which contribute the city's
government initiatives in
protecting and preserving its
urbanscape for city dwellers for
them to benefit from.The Iloilo
River Esplanade which stretches on
both sides of Iloilo River which has
been designed a renowned Filipino
Architect Paulo Alcazaren who
designed Clarke
Quay in Singapore, is the longest
linear park and riverside boulevard
in the Philippines.The mangroves
along the Iloilo River Esplanade is
also a breeding ground for marine
species.
24.
25. CITY-WIDE Urban Poor
Network, which links
together the city's three poor
community federations,
provides a platform for
discussion and enables the
city's poor communities to
tackle common issues with
their collective strength,
instead of in isolation as
individual communities or as
competing and territorial
federations.
26. CITY-WIDE Settlement
Upgrading :The urban poor
community network and the
city government are working
together and combining their
resources towards a common
goal of making Iloilo a city
where everyone has secure,
safe land, decent housing and
access to basic infrastructure
and social services, even in a
context with extremely
limited resources.
27. The objective of the
Sustainable Livelihood
Program is to reduce poverty
and inequality by generating
employment among poor
households and by moving
highly vulnerable households
into sustainable livelihoods
and toward economic
stability.
28. CITY-WIDE Disaster Rehabilitation
: The city government and the
urban poor community networks
are also working closely together
to ensure the most vulnerable
families affected by calamities to
move to safe, secure land and new
houses as communities, and to
plan for the inevitability of future
disasters by relocating
communities in danger zones to
safer land and building up the
city's protections against floods
and storms in ways that don't
displace and impoverish people
but give them new opportunities
for a more secure future.
