This document discusses optimization in aerospace design, specifically enabled by additive manufacturing (AM). It begins by defining optimization and providing examples of different types of optimization problems. It then discusses how AM facilitates structural optimization by removing machining constraints. Both current and future possibilities for topological, meso-level, and micro-level structural optimization are presented. Challenges for design, analysis, manufacturing, and culture change are also outlined. The presentation concludes by discussing the potential for holistic, global optimization and challenges therein.
