Also, many of those are build using JavaScript and are using other open-source packages and tools included in the JavaScript ecosystem. The City of Amsterdam is pioneering the field of open-source development by local governments worldwide. But how do we incorporate Open Standards into our projects, choose which packages to use, maintain our repositories and keep our codebase reliable?

Victor Sabatier is a freelance web and mobile developer who builds applications using Meteor, React, and React Native. He presented on React Native which allows developers to write mobile apps using React and release them for both iOS and Android. The benefits of React Native include better look and feel, improved developer experience, and the ability to choose your level of abstraction. Scaling Agile Data Warehousing with the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)

Context Matters

Em Campbell-Pretty gave a presentation on scaling agile practices to a large enterprise data warehousing program. The data warehouse contained over 80 TB of business data across 28 servers processing 400 million records daily. Campbell-Pretty described establishing agile teams, organizing them into a release train, and using SAFe principles and practices to coordinate their work. This resulted in delivery cycle times decreasing from 12 months to 3 months with weekly deployments, cost reductions of 70%, and improvements in quality, on-time delivery, and team satisfaction.

During this session we will build a Windows 8 application without any code (No Code!). This will demonstrate the power of Project "Siena" and how business users can be empowered to create the next generation of applications using HTML5 and the Metro Framework.

The term "connected device” is typically used to mean a device or machine that is capable of connecting to a network - i.e. it can send and receive data via cellular, WiFi, or bluetooth connections. But is this really a connected device? Integration and interoperability are required for a device to be relevant in the Internet of Things, and Web APIs are the de facto standard enabling true connectivity. By looking at some successful implementations around connected “things”, we’ll understand the key requirements for an API First approach to IoT - including backend integration, mediation and security.

When designers ask “why are we doing this”, we often shy away from the business reasons. If we try to design with a holistic view of everything, shouldn’t we understand the business needs as well? Taking a step away from the traditional design thinking, this session will dive into business design and stretch our design thinking muscle to business thinking. Business design brings in the commercial prospect to form a more complete approach to solving complex problems. In this session, we will look at examples of hands-on case study of how to integrate commercial thinking into design projects. How to balance the different requirements and needs from all angles? What are the different toolkits that can be used for designers to start thinking about business more? And maybe most importantly, how can designers stop being scared of numbers.

The mobile application (app) software is downloaded to run on the smart device, but many ‘back end’ services are needed for it to work in a functional, secure, reliable and scalable way. Many mobile apps need to ‘connect to the cloud’ to use services provided by cloud platforms. This talk will explore how to design and develop a mobile app that consumes cloud services, including for application processing, data storage, authentication and authorisation. We will describe the steps needed to do test and deploy the app to users after meeting the platform’s compliance requirements.

It is rooted in everything, and “timeliness” is now more important than ever especially as we see businesses automate more and more of their processes. This presentation will scratch the surface of streaming discovery with a deeper dive into the telecommunications space where it is normal to receive billions of events a day from globally distributed sub-systems and where key decisions “must” be automated. We’ll start out with a quick primer on telecommunications, an overview of the key components of our architecture, and make a case for the importance of “ringing”. We will then walk through a simplified solution for doing windowed histogram analysis and labeling of data in flight using Spark Structured Streaming and mapGroupsWithState. I will walk through some suggestions for scaling up to billions of events, managing memory when using the spark StateStore as well as how to avoid pitfalls with the serialized data stored there. Power Grid Model The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
