Building The Ark
2014-2015
Where have we been/What will continue?
• PLC’s
• High quality learning targets
• Common Assessments
The Big 4:
• 1.) What essential standards have been learned?
• 2.) What evidence (product) do you have that they learned it?
• 3.) What are the specific names of the students who did not meet the
standard?
• 4.) How did your TEAM respond to those students who did not meet the
standard?
3
Expectations and Measures
• Common Quarterly Assessments (4 times per year) –building wide, all
subjects
• Common Midterm (4 times per year)-building wide, all subjects
• Common Formative assessments (at least 8 over the year) -build wide, all
subjects
• Common Learning Targets (similar daily/ weekly, within grade level content
PLC)-building wide
• Data analysis of the above assessments-4 key questions answered
4
5
The Cycle of Common Formative Assessment:
• Develop PLCs
• Collaborative
conversations
• Gather and share
data
• Analyze data
• Make instructional
decisions based on
data
• Identify power
standards.
• Unwrap
• Develop strong
learning targets
• Focused Teaching
• CITW
• CFA's
• Timely and quality
feedback
• Student-led
conferences
-Student peer-to-peer
feedback
-Student self-reflection
-Teacher peer-to-peer
feedback
- Standards posted in
every room.
- Every learning target
labeled with standard
-Every
activity/assignment
directly tied to
standard.
-Collaborative Grading
-Standards-focused
conversations
-Small group re-
teaching
-Teacher/Student
swapping
Where are we headed?
Similar Learning Targets
District Expectations for Learning Targets:
The learning targets should be:
- Posted daily
- Visible
- Easily read/specific/measurable
- In a consistent place
- Be revisited at the middle and end of each lesson
- Be used as closure each lesson
West Middle School Expectations for Learning Targets:
- Use “I can” statements
- Use vocabulary such as create, evaluate, analyze, apply,
understand, remember (Depth of Knowledge)
- T/TH partners will have common “I can” statements
- Each lesson will be started referencing the learning target
and revisited at middle and end of each lesson.
Standards Written on Common Assessments
Required: Each question on common mid-term will be directly
linked to a standard in your course and that standard will be
identified on the test.
Encouraged: Continue this practice on each assessment/assignment.
Standards Based Grading
6th grade
Consulting Teachers
• Stephanie Irish- STEM
• Lorynda Van Den Hul- Literacy
Fresh Desk
• New district-wide system to facilitate managerial and instructional needs

SLC: Housekeeping
- Homeroom teachers will still set up the conference with a phone call and email.
- In addition students will create invitations inviting their parent to attend
- Students whose parents are unable to attend will still host a conference with an
administrator, counselor, support staff, team leader, or other school official who will
actively engage in the conference. Homeroom teacher will organize this.
- PD time will be allocated to the design and organization of SLC during the two
Monday’s prior to conferences.
- This is a new endeavor which will change as we learn and grow!
Now…
-Gather as grade level
homerooms to start the
conversations surrounding the
organization of SLC’s.
And then finish the day
with your content partner
reviewing your common
quarterly test and creating
your learning targets.
