Evaluation Task 1
In what ways does your media
production of film use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real
media products?
One of the first notable things about our
thriller is the way we challenge the
conventions of real media products by not
putting the name of a director or producer
in the opening credits. We felt that our
film would be pioneered by the cast more
so than the director as the likelihood
would be that they are not well known or
possibly it is their first film.
We can see the way this differs from a
acclaimed film of a similar vein to ours;
This is England. This opening sequence
displays the name of director and
producer before even arriving at its
cast. This film is on a very similar scale
to ours in terms of concept reinforcing
the ambition in making a statement
such as this.
We see Food Chain use the conventions
of a similar thriller with the British made
Dead Mans Shoes where the protagonist
solemnly walks on his own throughout
the opening sequence suggesting he is on
a journey somewhere.
This is near identical to a shot in our
thriller where we see a shot of our
protagonist doing the same thing. Both
characters are also walking from right
to left within the frame. This naturally
unsettles the audiences slightly as it is
the opposite to reading. The only thing
different in these shots is that our mise
en scene establishes the urban
environment that our lead character
lives in.
Kidulthood Food Chain
Here we see two sets of near identical shots between our thriller and urban, British drama/thriller Kidulthood. In the top clip we see a our
bully holding up someone just like in the real film to its left. This shows that we share the same interpretation of physical bullying in a
school environment. Interestingly, we have both subverted a stereotype and made the lead bully a girl making the actions more alarming
to a contemporary audience. Both of these characters share a similar costume with the adapted and messy school uniform and we even
paid attention to the detail of having our female bully wear suggestive hooped earrings.
Both Food Chain and Kidulthood also show a similar kind of violence from a boy with this comparison being more accurate considering that
the scene is outside against a wall much like in our thriller, as opposed to in a classroom. In both scenes of Kidulthood, the bullies use an
array of antagonistic and rude language which is something we were keen to include in our thriller to attain a sense of realism.
This is a screen shot form the opening
sequence of Martin Scorsese's Shutter
Island. A prominent feature of the
sequence as with many thriller opening
sequences is the ominous and dark
music. This gives the audience the
general mood and direction of the
thriller straight from the outset and
reveals that something dangerous is on
the precipice.
As opposed to this, in our thriller we
made the conscious decision not to use
music, even at moments where it would
have been appropriate. This lulls the
audience into a false sense of security
and nearly bores them therefore making
it far more surprising where the fight
breaks out seemingly from nowhere.
They think the protagonist is safe but
are awoken from this realisation. By
definition, I believe this is more
‘thrilling’.
