BLDS Migration to Koha (KohaCon12)
The British Library for Development Studies migrated from an old proprietary library management system to the open source Koha system. They chose Koha because it was developed and maintained by a worldwide community, allowed them to install and modify it themselves, and aligned with their objectives of building capacity in developing countries. After evaluating various open source options based on licensing, community support, and functionality, Koha was seen as the most complete system. The migration was outsourced to a third party vendor and took approximately 8 months. While some issues remained, the implementation was considered a success with praise from users.

Microsoft has changed its perspective on open source software and now supports open source models and ecosystems. It competes with open source products as it does any other competing products. Microsoft promotes customer choice by participating in ecosystems that include both open source and proprietary software. Microsoft engages with the open source community through partnerships, communities, technology research, and commitments to transparency and innovation. However, open source software is not always the best solution and different types of software and different stakeholder needs must be considered to determine what solution provides the best value.

Mooc

MOOCs allow open registration, publicly shared course materials, and flexible completion, but do not provide individualized instruction or academic credit standardly. They provide both opportunities and challenges for higher education.
