"Big Data" is term heard more and more in industry – but what does it really mean? There is a vagueness to the term reminiscent of that experienced in the early days of cloud computing. This has led to a number of implications for various industries and enterprises. These range from identifying the actual skills needed to recruit talent to articulating the requirements of a "big data" project. Secondary implications include difficulties in finding solutions that are appropriate to the problems at hand – versus solutions looking for problems. This presentation will take a look at Big Data and offer the audience with some considerations they may use immediately to assess the use of analytics in solving their problems.
The talk begins with an idea of how big "Big Data" can be. This leads to an appreciation of how important "Management Questions" are to assessing analytic needs. The fields of data and analysis have become extremely important and impact nearly all facets of life and business. During the talk we will look at the two pillars of Big Data – Data Warehousing and Predictive Analytics. Then we will explore the open source tools and datasets available to NATO action officers to work in this domain. Use cases relevant to NATO will be explored with the purpose of show where analytics lies hidden within many of the day-to-day problems of enterprises. The presentation will close with a look at the future. Advances in the area of semantic technologies continue. The much acclaimed consultants at Gartner listed Big Data and Semantic Technologies as the first- and third-ranked top technology trends to modernize information management in the coming decade. They note there is an incredible value "locked inside all this ungoverned and underused information." Smartphones are the most common wearable devices. In every single smartphone, more than 20 sensors continuously track all kind of behavioral and environmental data, from geo-location to even remote influences like magnetic field and local gravitation.
To develop meaningful models of users’ behavior, we need to put the technical measurements into context. This is done via interactions with an app. We at Datarella trigger the interactions on the phone by geo-fencing (coming near a pre-defined location, e.g. a retailer’s outlet), and other “complex events” using an Event Processing Language (EPL) and a Complex Event Processing Engine (CEPE).
We want also show best practices how to deal with privacy and informational self-determination, and how to give users a fair deal and transparancy to the data, that we collect by their cooperation in our projects.

Seit einigen Jahren bewegt sich der Markt für Bio-Produkte („Öko wird schick“). Es finden mehr und mehr Menschen in die neu gegründeten Bio-Supermärkte („Bio goes Mainstream“), die in vielen Punkten nicht dem „bürgerlichen“ Stereotyp des Naturkost-Kunden entsprechen, und von Aldi bis zu Penny und Lidl erweitern die Discounter ständig ihr Bio-Sortiment. Deutschland steht vor einem tiefgreifenden Wandel hin zu einer nachhaltig konsumierenden Gesellschaft.
Im Vordergrund scheint zunächst nicht so stark weltanschauliche Überzeugung zu stehen, als vielmehr kulturelle Aspekte der Ernährung, Haushaltsführung und Ausdrucksform der Persönlichkeit. Die Motive reichen auch tatsächlich vom Wunsch nach ethisch korrekter Erzeugung bis zur offen bekannten Freude am Schönen und am Genuss. Ein neuer Lebensstil, der so genannte Lohas (Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability), vereint die Freude am Konsum mit dem Anspruch, gesund zu leben und Natur und Umwelt zu schonen. Die neuen Konsumenten haben nichts mit Öko-Aktivisten alter Schule zu tun. Sie wollen ein komfortables Leben führen, allerdings mit Produkten, die umwelt- und sozialverträglich hergestellt werden.
Mit etwa 21% der Bevölkerung, die heute dieser „Grünen“ Gruppe zuzuordnen sind, kann man mittlerweile durchaus von einem Massenphänomen sprechen; hohes Einkommen, Markenbewusstsein, Vergnügen am Konsum und hoher Werbeaufgeschlossenheit macht die „Greens“ auch zu einer attraktiven Zielgruppe für Werbung.
Deshalb haben wir im folgenden einige allgemeine Betrachtungen aus der aktuellen Typologie der Wünsche zusammengestellt.
