Old Glory was a 24-star American flag that was gifted to Captain William Driver in Salem, Massachusetts in the early 1800s. When Driver retired to Nashville in 1837, he took Old Glory with him. During the Civil War, southern rebels tried to destroy the flag but Driver had hidden it inside his quilt. In 1862 when the Union regained control of Nashville, Driver retrieved Old Glory from its hiding place and raised it again, even in his old age. The flag was later donated to the Smithsonian Institution where it remains on display today.
