1) The 1863 Great French Wine Blight caused by phylloxera aphids destroyed over 40% of French vineyards, severely damaging the French economy. Vines were eventually saved by grafting French vines onto American rootstock resistant to the aphids.
2) In 1935, France established the AOC label and regulatory body to guarantee the origin and authenticity of wines and protect regional reputations, with over 468 AOCs designated.
3) The 1976 Judgment of Paris wine competition shocked the French wine industry when California wines bested French wines in a blind tasting, bringing global attention to New World wines like those from Napa Valley.
